500 miles achieved yesterday. Fuel economy seems good. Really good. 

Need to get the suspension sorted when I'm home.

Easier to run the diesel Borat through the local Sainsbury's wash, and maybe vacuum out some of the horsehair and hay/straw....

It's done 135k, mot history isn't great. I see a cheap skydome for the Alessi in the future....

160 miles done in the merc today.  Had to start it early and idle for ten mins first thing as it was one giant block of ice. By the time I made the field of dreams at 11ish the rear window was still wet inside. The main thing I don’t like about old cars in winter, they’re not always watertight.  I expect six cylinder will update his thread when the excitement of a new Trevi dies down. But mission was accomplished- xantia moved, de-moused ( they ate an awful lot of carpet and plastic vents) and washed. LHM leak identified and bonnet catch lubricated.  Then I started getting cold and so headed off to oxford to meet up with the family leaving the new Italian supermodel to arrive without me.

I even washed the Peugeot floor mats FFS.  But it's such a nice, straight car I figured it deserved a session.

Another decent ex-bramz car, that should be a perfect WBoD.  It'll also be doing a few long trips over the coming months, so the large tank and mingebag mpg from the 2.1 XUD will be handy.

It's much easier to drive than the Laguna, having a smoother throttle response and lighter clutch.  I know the engines are chalk and cheese, but I also found that 2 litre gooner I had tricky to drive smoothly.  It helps this is a good example, but I'm pleasantly surprised actually.  If it wasn't for the bonkers V6 in the Laguna, I'd definitely choose a 406 out of the two.  Feels the all round better car IMO.

Weird stance tho.

My uncle had an S reg 406 a few years ago until some dozy pissed cow failed to give way at a junction and T boned it.

Just done a 200 mile trip to pick up a few Dutch bikes on the south coast. Took the sprinter minibus which did well once wound up! As I passed Stonehenge I suspect I looked like a Druid what with a beard and an elderly minibus-cum-camper. Currently refuelling at my overnight stop

Those 406s are fantastic things, supremely comfortable, too.

Don't forget the 406 could come with the identical v6 engine that is used in your Laguna. Just finding one nowadays is likely the difficult part.

Yep.  That's why I should've bought a V6 estate a few months back.  Think it was up for £495 or something.  Although my hunch is the gooner will be the bigger hoot, just because it feels more twitchy and less refined than the 406.  Which is a good thing for me, as I'm only owning it for the LoLz.

As much as I never fell in love with my 406 it was a fucking ace wbod! Fierce heaters, air con to De mist, excellent sound system... Fuck I miss it...

Those pre-facelift 406s really do look magical, especially in a nice colour. Where did it all go wrong Peugeot?

Oh and yeah, the west coast of New Zealand is fairly epic. Did 360 miles in the Fairmont yesterday. Lots of punch of overtaking caravans, comfortable and effortless. Marvellous.

That was part of the problem, mine was a faceloft 406 and although very good, it felt like an older car that had been modernised, which just felt odd. Was spoilt from the laguna 2 I imagine as that was a 1st gen car, felt squashier. 

Driving @catsinthewelder s 405 nailed it home too, the 405 felt just perfect, wasn't trying to pretend it was something newer/better/etc

It makes sense in my head anyway...

The saga of The Aero's sump drop deepens. Turn outs that the sump has two hidden bolts behind a strengthening thing cast into it. The bolts can only be removed by cutting holes in said strengthening thing. Not at all happy about this.

Nonsense I don't need right now. Only a small number of cars have that sump, and mine's one of them. If I can't get the sump off, I may be in trouble, as The Volvo is going in for an MOT on the 9th of this month and I have no practical way of getting to work unless I get The Aero back on the road by next Sunday.

Imp Jrs dropped me off down the road from the station. Couldn't get near to it as there was OMG ROWDWERK KAOS in Shipley.

Result! Discovered that The Aero's sump has weak points which can be bashed out with a hammer and chisel, allowing access to the two hidden bolts, which should now be easy to remove. Quite why the sump was designed like this, I don't know. GM interference, probably.

Due to the holes, the remaining two bolts can be felt with my fingers and therefore should be easy enough to remove and refit. Quite what I'm going to use to cover the holes I have no idea. I'll work something out. 

I'm now postponing removing the sump until next weekend, as the window of opportunity has now closed and my enthusiasm has diminished.

Alternate route home suggested by L1 was much appreciated as I got some fun driving in. 

Car is currently relegated to the road until I sell or find alternative accommodation for the 944 and it will get a spot on the drive. 

Car is well weapon. Very pleased.

Local ride out today, very good attendance considering icy and bleeding freezing. Guessing about 70+ scooters and two or three bikes.

Went on the Lambretta, then came home and swapped for the bike to give that a run out.

The modern Korado has shat it's radiator out, blotting an otherwise spotless copybook.  £600+vat to fix because dealer only part innit m9 (+7-8 weeks lead time on the part from Korea), so off the road it goes for a good long think about it's behaviour.

This of course means that the search for a suitable WBOD is now on. The primary candidate so far is a 2002 Peugeot 607 2.2 hdi with 197k on the clock and 6 months test for £450… wcpgw?? (Apart from emissions, electrics, general Frenchness, etc)

What about taking down to a good old fashioned radiator repair place? If you can find one that is.
