Actually the whole car is incredibly sound. my then 17 year old classic was eye wateringly crusty in these bits that are blemish free on this 27 year old p38. So its not as iconic; but it doesnt dissolve so VIGOROUSly either, at last bodily if not electrically.

I've likely written the story here but I can't find it so I doubt you'll be able to.

It wasn't long back from a garage and had developed a noise on right hand bends, I was heading home to investigate and was on a dual carriageway with a long left hand curve (so no noise was being made).

PADINK! PADINK! PADINK!

I look left and see things coming off the car and disappearing into the night and then the front left corner falls down, I become a passenger and the car lurches toward the verge and comes to a halt in the gravel by the side of the road.

It was over in a moment.

I put the hazards on and got out to find that the weheel had exited stage left, creased the wing and left the car in the sitation you saw in the image.

I phoned the RAC and they said they be there in 2 or 3 hours or some such.

During the wait I found the wheel and 1 nut.

The RAC man turned up, dug a hole, jacked the car up with the world's biggest trolley jack and put the wheel back on with the nut I had found and 1 from each of the other wheels. He then followed me home. 

For a while the groove i cut in the tarmac and the big hole in the gravel trap were visible on google street view but I can't find them now. I think there may have been another accident in the same spot as that area is no longer covered in the 2008 footage and there's tracks going up the verge.

I can pin down the exact location by lining up the two road signs in this image. The road has since been resurfaced so all traces have gone.

From what I remember the P38's body, thanks perhaps to BMW's influence, is galvanised and therefore considerably less rot-prone than contemporary Discos or RRCs.

Or L322s because clearly they felt they'd given up too many traditions.

The body’s are quite resistant to rust as are the chassis but I’m not sure about being galvanised as I’ve seen a couple with rotten inner sills,

This is what I meant when I said that the build quality is great on P38s. They are pretty much the most rot-resistant car I've ever known. It's honestly remarkable

 

I don't think it has anything to do with BMW - BMWs from the time rusted pretty well and BMW had nothing to do with the development of the car. The P38 is a Rover product really, while the L322 is much more BMW

 

I think it was just that they really wanted to differentiate the Range Rover and Discovery. They put in a tangible reason why you're paying more for the Range Rover than you would for the Disco

Also nice truck. The guy you bought this off is v. local to me - have had a few dealings with him, including him looking very bemused when I turned up to collect an entire P38 driver's door in my 944. It fit - just.

Also I dunno where people get these mad ideas about cylinder wall thickness in the 4.6 cos it's literally a stroked 4.0 - bore is identical. What I was told many years ago is that the standard fuelling map runs slightly lean at 70ish mph which led to hotspots and thus overheating. But my GEMS (early) one has done 155k and doesn't miss a beat. Also it looks like the wreck of the Titanic underneath and gets a surface corrosion advisory every year but isn't actually rotten, they never are.

I was riding my luck a little as it would need a few flicks to make it contact the flywheel. Then instead or being sticky to engage, its become stuck engaged.

Verdict- cheapskate owner gets bitten. I do have a more modern more powerful replacment that was both cheaper and didnt need it to be done on exchange .

PS- as we know im a fickle fucker with cars, so to clarify the last post, the more powerful replacement is the starter motor, not a whole different car 😂
