If it has any LHM left in it I would run it then re tighten (just finger tight for now) the pressure regulator bleed screw. It will then either start leaking or, if it has sufficient LHM, it will rise up. If it does that without leaking I suspect brake application will bring on the big leak.

Be very careful though, don't go under it without axle stands and be aware that LHM is at such high pressure a high pressure leak if your hand/arm etc gets in the way could penetrate the skin potentially requiring amputation. Not to worry you like but forewarned is forearmed...

Factoid:

Both the GS and samara were factory fitted with rotary engines.

IIRC the samara rotarys were loaned to the police and were fast  (125mph (!) allegedly) but fragile 

Ive just noticed the upcurve of the rear tailgate glass into the roof. Also when the taligate lifts up, the centre section of the bumper is brought with it.

never realised the Samara also had the Rotary option, thats neat! I know some Riva's had it as an option, I would love to see a detailed review/look into both them, as I have heard of the Soviet Rotary engine, but never seen any real detailed look into them, I have always been quite curious to know just how they performed, and also how the designed compared to  the well known NSU, Citroen and Mazda designs

also the concept of a Rotary powered Lada Riva sounds so very incongruous, no one would expect such a brick to have a Rotary in it :)

Im the new custodian of the ex @2110 Samara- it should be back here during the week and off to a tame welder.

Genuinely sad to say goodbye, but hopefully it will be back on the road in no time and will be as enjoyable for you to drive as it was for me

Looking forward to it! My GF is also from behind the iron curtain, so im looking forward to her driving it. TBH i think she would prefer a niva, but they are quite pricey these days. I did recently consider ordering a new one (unsure if possible now) but it was until recently via a london based intermediary.

Well this is about as luxury as the Samara gets being a decadent export market car :D So hopefully she will find some enjoyment in it! I believe the last "new" Niva in stock in London was sold last year but a personal import won't be deemed a problem from another country such as Ukraine etc. I get regular packages from Russia still and have been told by HMRC that as long as they come from a private individual to a private individual they have no interest in stopping them. Likewise on the Lada 2111 as a personal import they were uninterested it was originally from Russia. If you need help with parts I have a reliable network of suppliers from Ukraine mostly (but some from Russia too) and not the overpriced expensive companies that get thrown around in the Lada groups! Happy to forward any contacts if wanted.

Man, that GS is hot !!! I really hope I won't be able to afford it when it (inevitably) comes up for sale in a few weeks...

I drove an NSU80 back in 1981 when a workmate rolled up with it - we nicknamed it the PowerSledge as it was powerful and slippery. I never, ever knew that Citroen were pushing them out too - looks like it was a Wankel https://citroencarclub.org.uk/rotary-power/ - get this "producing 107 hp at 6500 rpm and 103 lb-ft at 3000 rpm" - 107 BHP in a GS? Fun*

The M35 looked like a GS but because reasons most of the panels are different, which makes running one of the few which escaped being scrapped really easy*. The oil crisis in 1973 really killed niche cars like this.

I used it to go and view the £500 p38 range rover 4.6 i bought. Whilst it was there a friend of the vendor, a retired mechanic took a shine to it after i mentioned the potential cylinder head issues, and bought it as a project.

The M35 looked rather like a 2 door coupe Ami 8 but very different under the skin.

The GS (or GZ) Birotor looked like a GS also very different under the skin.

GZ has a cut-down CX-esque front subframe, but then the CX was also potentially going to be rotary (hence the shitty engine bay for getting a V6 in there). I nearly bought a GZ about 15 years ago for "some thousands"... I suspect it would have made me very miserable indeed.

Lovely GS and Lada etc, but this is the most interesting bit. I have been mildly obsessed witht eh Cuppage Fulvia for years and considered buying it when it came up for sale. I'd love to know what progress, if any, has been made and what the plans are for it

A vehicle of which not many were made, most bought back and scrapped and the maker disavowing support of it at the time; short of trying to run a concept car on the road it's difficult to conceive of a thing more likely to be a perpetual garage queen.

I saw one at a GSAMi rally some years ago - were they all gold? It sounded superb - a bit like thunderbird two taking off.

that's absolutely glorious.  

Same year as my Estelle but looks super modern in comparison, yet my Favorit probably makes the Samara feel a bit antiquated

Didn't realise that was a 1500.  That'll probably go pretty well if in decent tune then.  Mine was a 1.3 and it didn't hang about, even smothered as it was by all the emission control nonsense with it being a later one.  

Does the ridiculously huge "stop" warning light on the dash work?

He also rather graciously hasn't mentioned that the GS decided to commemorate leaving me my bursting a hydraulic pipe liberally covering the road outside my neighbours house and the man's nice lorry.

Despite attention of sand followed by detergent the tarmac outside the neighbours still looks heavily soiled...

Biological washing powder - liberally spread - and left. It will work over the course of a week or two. Don’t hose it off, just leave it. It looks odd but works.
