"Bargain" Lada Riva 1500E £900

Up for sale is my Lada Riva Estate. It has been a trusty steed and has always been a car that I could just jump in and drive. It's a basic no frills car, drives reasonably well (for a Lada) and is pretty solid all over.

It's the 1.5l engine with 5 speed manual gearbox, it isn't fast.

There's a bit of play in the steering but it can still be driven safely at higher speeds, just initially it takes some getting used to.

There's a few areas of rust starting to appear in places but it's at a stage where it can be rubbed down and tidied up. There's 77k miles on the clock and a rev counter has been fitted in place of the voltmeter. It's recently had a set of shocks and springs fitted so is now at standard height. There's also a stainless exhaust from the down pipe back.

I'm after £1200 for it and it's located in Dunfermline.

I used to have one of these, same colour too.

Not bad things but the steering is a bit vague.

Very appealing nowadays.

Swap you for a rusty Suzuki SC100? Huge levels of want but really can't justify it at the moment. Fingers crossed it stays within the fold and I get a crack at it another time. GLWS.

Hnngg...sploosh.

Do these share rear doors with the saloon or did Lada actually make a whole new pattern door for the estates?

...GLWTS komrade.

Lada (and indeed Fiat) did make a special rear door, or at least window set, for the estates.  The one using the saloon doors is the FSO 125p estate.  I've had both.

Hey Scott have you tried winding in the grub screw on the steering box to take the play out? Don't wind it in too far or the steering will go stiff but it's there to compensate for wear.

Unbelievable - these used to be utterly worthless, even when they were new.

So did mk2 escorts.

For a couple of years in the late 90's it seemed as if I saw a transporter load of Ladas heading for a port every day, it's a wonder any survived at all.

I actually drove one of these new when I did a taxi driving job many many years ago. I liked it.

Sorry. As you were.

My brother had one, from what I remember it was 4-5 years old at the time and he gave something like £500 for it, they were that worthless at the time.

Effectively if you bought one on 'easy terms' as it were, you were fucked. Only Lada would give you anything like book for one, so you'd end up refinancing on another one.

Woodleigh at Chesterfield used to sell them.

Is it too shite for autoshite or just too expensive?

Probably too expensive, the average sales price here is £50.

Try a broader sales platform, I'm sure it's worth your asking price to someone.

I'll probably end up either sticking it on ebay or just holding onto it. I would probably swap it for something else but don't really know what I want next.

Bang it back down on the bump stops and watch them swarm on the blue forum. Can't see it hanging around for long.

Definitely not. I wouldn't say no to a 505.

I think the problem is, these have gained such a following that it's lifted them out of Autoshite - certainly in terms of values. Rear-engined Skodas have gone the same way, and the Favorit will be following very soon. Which is why I'm miffed I haven't owned one yet. I can't really comprehend the idea of paying over a grand for any car, let alone a Lada. I shouldn't think you'll have trouble selling it, it just might struggle here.

I was thinking of finding myself a Skoda Estelle as I had one for a while many years ago and really liked it. Disappointing to find out they are now sought after. I paid £60 for mine.

There is a Southpaw 1300 on egay for a similar price that needs a fair bit of work, for a Lada Riva, this isn't a bad price Scott, put it on carandclassic, and I will try and spread the word for you

If it's any consolation you've not missed much; I regularly drove a 1500 saloon back in the day when I was at Uni, and while I liked the pea green paintwork and massive beige plastic seats, it was one of the most irredeemably hopeless cars I've ever driven.

Price drop! I think my initial value of the car was probably a little bit optimistic. Would probably swap for something old and shite.

I'm seriously having second thoughts about selling it, just took it out for a drive today and clocked up a couple of hundred miles.

It's bloody lovely, you should keep it, hopefully at least as long as it takes for me to have disposable income for another second car....

Take your time, it'll be here for a while. There might be a deal happening with a 2.0 Fiat Twincam so if that happens I'll definitely be keeping it.
