It started off as a Bedford 'W' type. I guess the upper deck is occupied by the members of the removal team.

How does one escape whilst the trailer's attached, say if 'Big' Ernie's just dropped his guts or something?

Something I'm curious about what is the most surviving old truck model in the UK, does anyone know?

I can say for sure that Norway's must be the Scania models like the 111 and 80 below, these were sold in many versions over a long time so I don't know all of the models but they have survived in large numbers here. And in my opinion one of the best looking trucks ever.

Both and thinking of really old ones, let's say 35 years and older so older than 1989.

You still see old ERF’s working.  Ones from the late 80’s to mid 90’s.

There’s still quite a few old Volvo trucks out working for a living too.

Theres the famous one everyone knows, but I still see 80’s ones about a bit too. There’s a removal company down here still running a Volvo FL7.

Nice

That's off to the Le Mans Test that took place on the 17th of April 1963

Car No.15 is the Aston Martin DP212, chassis number #DP212/1. It was driven by Jo Schlesser, Bruce McLaren, Lucien Bianchi and William Kimberly.

Car No.20 is the Aston Martin DP214, chassis number DB4/GT/0195/R. It was driven by Bruce McLaren and Jo Schlesser.

Car No.21 is the Aston Martin DP214, chassis number DB4/GT/0194/R. That was driven by William Kimberly and Lucien Bianchi.

Both DP214 cars returned for the 24 Hours in June. Chassis 0194 was driven by William Kimberly and Jo Schlesser, chassis 0195 was driven by Bruce McLaren and Innes Ireland. Both cars failed to finish because of holed pistons.

Not seen a lot of old stuff recently but this was the first thing that turned up this morning. Annoyingly there was a lot of traffic coming the other way that marooned me on the wrong side of the road so I couldn't get a clear shot.

It's an ex-Army Foden 6x6 wrecker, quite popular with civilian recovery firms since they were demobbed.

This one was a bit of a surprise. Hanson Aggregates are rebranding as Heidelberg Materials but I didn't expect this 2003 Volvo to be given the new livery in its 20th year. Its operator obviously has no intention of retiring it any time soon.

I've never done a survey, but anecdotally I think it must be ERF

I am sure that I see far more old ERF doing work than any other type of truck. Actually, I can't remember the last time I saw a 30+ year old working that was not an ERF

You do also see 1980s Leyland and Mercedes 7500kg models in summer being used privately as horse transporters. Occasionally also Bedford

I did a factory tour of Leylands about 15 years ago. At the time they said the following as the major T1 suppliers:

  • C75+ engines - DAF Benelux
  • CF65 and LF engines - Cummins Darlington
  • CF65 and LF axles - Albion/AAC Glasgow
  • Bigger axles - DAF Benelux
  • Gearboxes - ZF Germany
  • Cabs - Renault/Volvo France and DAF Benelux

Is that still right? Any other commercial secrets you can share?

That's pretty much the same.

There's always ERFs coming out of the woodwork.

The cult following of 143 Scanias must have given them an reasonable survival rate, its certainly harder to find a nice F12 of the same age that isn't an import.

Got to be ERF with Foden a strong second, simply because the travelling fairground and circus community love those two brands more than any other. They're also very reluctant to throw anything away so there's been loads of old ERFs and Fodens dumped in their yards that have made it into preservation.

Still loads of old 7.5-ton horseboxes about. 1990s Ivecos, Leyland-DAF 45s and MANs are common but I've also seen Mercedes LNs, Ford Cargos and even a couple of AWDs.
