How often do you use your shite?

The were do you keep your shite thread got me thinking how often or how little i use a car/drive.

I work a 4shift rota 2 days,2 nights 4 days off.

On my 4 shifts on the car sits on the drive for 11hours,the works carpark for 12hours and the run to work and back takes around 30mins each way.

On my 4 off as of this morning i used it for the school run (as it was pissing down) so 2ish miles.I won't be used for school pickup.

Now the x-trail is the family/business car this gets used for most duties.

What about you lot

Any one of four cars could be used on a daily basis

heavy load lugging and trailer duty - Dispatch combi - 15,000 miles a year

heavy load lugging over long mileages - Mercedes estate - can sometimes do 500 miles in a day - 15,000 miles a year

pug 306 cabrio - has had 5,000 miles added to it since SWMB acquired it. Her daily

Fiat 126 - off road for winter - about to be rudely kicked into local service!

Scooter - seems to do 50 miles between MoTs.

Messerschmitt - being rudely awoken after thirteen year child-induced slumber.

Bond - awaiting restoration

smart - will get fixed one day

others - long term storage until I retire.

2CV and XM are alternating on my 8-mile round commute at the moment. 2CV gets used by Mrs DW from time to time and either can be requested to undertake a long trip.

I only tend to have one car legal at a time, and they're all old shite so they get used for everything.

I'm disappointed by the lack of 'whichever one starts' replies.

Since I sold my newish daily driver, I only use my shite-cars now.

The green 1987 is used only when the weather is good for a little drive around town to show off.

The beige 1989 is used almost every day.

Posted

Every day but it doesn't go far these days, 2 miles to one yard or six miles to another.

Every day, but the Xantia is far too competent to be considered shite.

Every day, several times (work).

Saab does about 9k miles a year, more if there's a driving holiday involved.

Range Rover does about 4k miles a year.

DS does about 6k miles a year.

He Who Must Not Be Named does about 20k a year.

Volvo - too soon to get an accurate figure, but it looks like 6k a year.

I tend to cycle to work 3-4 days a week and drive the rest. Depends on the weather and what else I'm up to. E.g. I've got a long run coming up this weekend so I've been saving my knees by driving every day. If I'm off visiting by myself I tend to use my own if I can. I really don't enjoy driving her Peugeot.

As I've found driving 60's shite though, they are old cars now, stuff does wear out and you can't just get it off the shelf any more. Hence getting the Ami to take the pressure off having to keep the Anglia completely roadworthy all the time. It'll mean I can take it off the road and deal with a few very straightforward things (like shocks) that these days put the car out of use for a few weeks because they have to be sent off for reconditioning. I'm finding the only way round this is to buy knackered parts off eBay to send away to be reconditioned, then I fit at my leisure. But it's not ideal, especially with the Ford tax levied on Anglias, plus always two lots of postage etc.

The pool ready to use changes during the year, firstly for the weather and to let others have some exercise.

This winter the pool has been:

1996 Citroen ZX turbo diesel estate

1988 BMW 735iSE

1999 Citroen Xantia V6 Exclusive

1999 Volvo V70T5

2001 Volvo V70 XC

1990 Mercedes 200TE

2004 Range Rover TD6 Vogue

1995 Audi V6 Convertible

Recently joined by Citroen C15 D van and shortly to be joined by my second Citroen Visa 17RD. My 1972 MGB GT has recently been bought home and my wife’s 2000 BMW 330Ci put into storage.

My wife likes to use one car for work her Volvo V70 T5 but is doing quite a lot of miles at the moment so does turn about with the Mercedes 200TE and the other Volvo V70. Me I try to keep the remainder of the “In Use Pool†exercised so use the cars in turn. Although which car to use usually answers itself by things like convertible sunny day, need load space, needing smaller car for parking in a car park, need a tow bar, feeling hard up which has best mpg, and what can I get at without moving other cars first!

Every day, roughly 10,000 smiles a year, i only work 7 miles away from home so my round trip is 14 miles and because the hours I work per shift it's a 3 day work week so that's only 42 miles a week, that's 2184 per year for work the rest is for pure enjoyment

I use the Reliant for work so 6 days a week, the Shuma for longer runs and the Santa Fe never as its daffy ducked.

The Disco is used daily for my 36 mile round trip.

However now the weather is drying up a bit, and it's light enough in the mornings to be able to spot the acres of mud that the local farmers have dragged into the roads, it will be getting replaced with the RF900

I only have one on the road, so the council estate is the go anywhere, do anything shite machine of choice at CMS_TOWERS

We relied on the proton as a sole car between us both for 18months of 110miles a day everday day,now since ive got the dolomite out of its inadvertent layup that has effectively replaced the proton for my 75miles round commute which has freed up the truffle valve to do 130miles a day on my wifes now vastly extra community shifts ..every day haha

its been a breeze generally but it relies upon being ready to jump all over any developing issues straight away

Worth it though for the looks of unimaginable terror that they generate when bimbling around eccentric boughs at the wheel that i am (not the wife..shes basically normal)

What I find is that when I get a minute at the weekend I take something off the car to work on it, then end up doing other things with the family so the car sits for a week not being driven.

Changed the front shocks on Saturday, then went to change the anti roll bar bushes and links while I was there, then got distracted, car has sat for a week on jack stands.

So the answer is not nearly as much as I would like.

Every day.

I love the thrill of driving to work in one of three HDi powered Citroens, wondering when the engine is going to explode showering nuns and kittens with bits of con-rod and oil or if the electrics are going to go up in smoke and trap me in the car slowly burning me alive. [/sarcasm]

I have to think up journeys for the Insight, I don't like commuting in it because my commute is low speed, bumpy lanes and it is no fun on such roads, likewise the MR2 really. The van is not old enough or beige enough to be shite but it has that happy shite vibe and consequently does more miles than everything else put together, SWMBO seems to always have a reason why she should use it instead of a car too.

Some cars just fit in with life whilst others are an end in themselves.

Fleet re-evaluation time?

Not nearly enough unfortunately.

I have a company van for work so I don't commute in my own cars. This does mean I have free reign on whatever car I want without having to worry about mpg or reliability etc. I just use them for personal use or just for fun.

I don't really use them during winter either because of the filth and salt everywhere.

Dolomite 1850HL - 50ish miles per day on the commute to and from work down a mix of twisty A and B roads and occasional jaunts to Aberdeen at 100 miles there and back. The thing has nearly done 91,000 miles and 6,000 of those were in the last 2 years! If it continues in use as my daily motor it'll be doing 15,000ish per year... It'll all end in tears...

Dolomite 1300 - Trips to the shops, local dithering, car shows and emergency commuting when the 1850 is off the road. Uses too much oil for proper daily use and the current max cruise speed of 50mph means it takes an extra 15 mins to drive to work...

Obviously I can't rely on a single old motor to get me to and from work everyday, so having a second slice of 1970s BL is justifiable, right?

I will use one of my cars to commute to work each day about 12 miles each way and for general use but rarely get out for a drive these days as the roads are just too damn busy. As such I just dont enjoy driving like I used to.

However, when En-ger-land are playing a big match I tend to slip out in one of my cars when everyone else is in the pub or watching it on telly. As the roads are empty I can have a good hoon around with little or no interuption and when I do come across another car, as there is little other traffic I can overtake easily.

I try to use them all the time. In reality it's whatever is on the end of the drive. I've tried being restrained and having certain ones sorned etc but for me the fun of it is to have a choice of what to drive. Having a few ready and on the button makes it easier to do my own work on them without the immediate pressure to have it finished by Monday morning etc. That's one other way I can fool myself into believing its not only logical but completely normal!!!

Edit- the other thing that makes it easier to use them all the time is avoiding having anything mint. I've been there and it brings out the worst in me. I look back in shame. My collection of tubs is far from mint so I don't fuss about if/when/where I'm using them.

Posted

I try to use them as often as possible. BX is taxed all year round, the GS is only used when it is dry. It is rust free and I hope to keep it that way.

I don't shy away from really using them, such as mega road trips. My main car is an Alfa, so I reckon using ancient French cars cannot be any more unreliable.

Posted

I use my fiesta 3 days a week to do the 17 or so mile to college and back. It's the used as when when but only by me.

The Frontera sits on the road side so either me or SWMBO take it for stuff like big shopping trips, when stuff needs moving or if there's loads of us going out or if I'm just being lazy as I don't have to move any other cars. Done about 1100 mile in it since I got it about 8 month ago.

All other stuff the modern ST is used

Since getting rid of my modern car last August, the 1988 Stellar has become my main vehicle.  Being retired, my mileage has reduced to about 10,000 per year from 24,000, so the Stellar's knackered engine can cope (it's a rattly unit with poor oil pressure).  My son's 1994 Tipo acts as a back-up vehicle for both of us - his main car is a Suzuki Alto.  The Tipo only does about 3,000 a year.  My 1961 Reliant Regal MKVI gets out once a month for a short drive of around 35 miles and occasionally goes further afield to rallies etc in the summer, though these trips are rarely more than 100 miles each way.

Looks around guiltily before admitting that I don't drive mine. (unless you count getting the A35 out of the garage to get the lawn-mower out).
