Mk3 Mondeo , purchased.

As I'm selling my other money pit, I decided to go all economical and buy a 1.8 mk3 mondeo.

£500 , 8 miles away. Bargain?

Picked it up in the pitch black and the pissing rain. Proper Bo' I tell thee....

Luckily the only items of concern are some corroded front discs and the rear brake pipes, its tested til April next year so plenty of time to sort them. The main plus point is I'm no longer buying £220 of unleaded every month.

We had these at work as pool cars (10 years ago!) 2.0 derv jobs in LX trim.

Heated screen, cruise control and a nice ride.  All round a decent car.

Must be the season for them, i agreed a deal on a 1.8 zetec yesterday and collected it today for my dad to replace his mk6 escrot (which im bridging tomorrow because its that hideous) great cars for the money and a bonus it was literally on my doorstep.

Wow man, I reckon your gonna feel like "recession man" going from a V8 to a Mondeo. That said, these Mondeos are fairly acceptable. Bread 'n' butter cars, do what they need to do without being overly pretentious. I've driven a few of these and they fairly nice, I certainly wouldn't turn my nose up at one.

Petrol ones seem to go through the auctions at Cannock for practically sod all every time the Midlands Massiv are up there. What's wrong with them? For a Ford, I think they're quite nice. (Just my preference, I have an irrational dislike of Fords for no particular reason)

All the massive issues (injectors, DMF, lunching turbos) seem to be confined to the TDCI and TDDI models. Petrol is boringly boring in terms of catastrophic failures.

What's wrong with them?

petrol ones can ingest the butterfly swirl flaps from in the inlet manifold destroying the engine at the worst case.

also they can get a thirst for oil because of worn rings and no one wants them because they think they need a mondeo diesel

They are dangerously cheap at the minute, and have been for a while. For those who aren't arsed about what they drive they're right in the sort of bargain bucket motoring radar. I had one (2.0 petrol) and hated it, but we're all different.

It is a boring vehicle, but the spec and the fact people are basically giving them away tempted me. Drives nicer than a vectra too. It'll do until I buy something silly again :)

Phakt all voxhalls iz shit.

Don't tell cavcraft I just said that, I'll end up with a corsa b blocking my driveway lol

VIVA la difference.

*You're still wrong though!

Does it really need rear brake pipes or is it an usual advisory on the test where they just have a little surface rust?

These are proper cheap though. Cant go wrong at that price.

1.8 pez one if these ticks all the boxes for cheap practical transport.

Did the cavcraft one not have the worst alloy wheels seen fitted to any car ?

The pipes are bubbling quite a lot, had a poke about under it yesterday. Looks like a flaring tool is going on the Christmas list. I've got a handheld one but it's utter wank.

I was working at Vauxhall when the vectra c came out, the petrol ones used to break front springs like they were made of rice paper. When I bought the wife one a couple of years back I stuck second hand diesel shocks and springs in it, bloody solid!

Yeah, it was a 2.0 pez with leather and horrible wheels. I thought it'd be a doddle to offload, but oh how wrong I was. You can get petrol ones for about £300 or less if you're not fussy about a few dents etc now

Nice, rear pipes are a bit of an arse to do though.

Aye. Hard to get them round the back of the tank.

I used to have a facelift Ghia X 130 TDCi and it was a great car.

Nice one, OP.

Yes it is the season for these. I've just agreed to buy an 07 plate dizzler for £750.

they do seem to drive ok  one mate has a 55 2.0 tdci ghia x and nother mate has a st155 council estate

I wouldn't turn one down if I needed cheap wheels. Petrol only though, I've known too many people who have had major issues with the tdci whotsits though. A shame as they are a fantastic engine when running properly.

I cant believe these are so cheap now! Nice 1.8 would make a good beater I reckon. Wonder if anyones put the old 1.8td lump in one?

Posted

I gave seen quite afew pez ones offered for scrap due the bottom end of the engine being knackered.

Imknow a chap with a 55 plate example who had another engine fitted when his just started knocking.

I paid £60 for that 53 plate 1.8 petrol a couple of years ago. 120k on the clock and full ex taxi spec.

Nice car once it had a set of michelins and a new wheel bearing.

I think Ford did, but with direct injection.
