Some of those are very clever and real skilled work. The two Granada’s are dreadful and I cannot see how anyone could think it a good idea. The Hunter is my favourite, I really like that, the Jag would also be nice if the wheels were swapped.

I remember a work in progress type report about that Granada with the 100E(?) front end in Street Machine years ago.  Doubt is ever got completed.  There was also a bit about a Granada estate modded to a crew cab pick up that actually looked all right.

Edit: not quite so good as i remember:

Heh, I saw that yesterday through a facebook group. It has a bloody Impreza drivetrain!

My taste tends to lean towards less is more, so shaved badges, colour coding, lower stance and better wheels.

That Delorean "estate" is an appallingly bad potatoshop.  I can do better than that and I can barely drive MS paint.

Are cars generally being modified less these days?  The Barryboys/max power era of late 90s/2000s seems to be well and truly over (thank fuck) but there doesn't seem to be anything that has replaced it.  Possibly a good thing, but very boring.

Fairly subtle changes for this Ro80:

DSC00064.JPG?1269208544

Brightwork painted body colour, and NSU wheels replaced by Porsche Fuchs alloys. The registration plate "KM 871" suggests there may be some changes under the bonnet, possibly a fuel-injected "KKM 871" rotary, which Audi were toying with installing in the 1982 C3 Audi 100 before getting cold feet.

I think there is much less modifying than there used to be.  I grew up in the max power era, it was mostly shit but i still have a lot of time for mods done well, not stupid kits held on with wood screws.  The Lada and Rapier up there look great to my eye.

But hardly anyone seems to do much of it any more, maybe it's part of the whole trend of younger people being less in to cars in general, not learning to drive and so on.

I remember one of the reasons given for Barryboys dying out was that less younger people even own their cars these days.

The finance company would take a dim view of you slapping a huge bodykit on their car.

Yup, it seems to be pass your test in car that’s not worth anything then get finance. The biggest ‘modification’ seems to be stupid things dangling from the mirror.

I'd never dream of modifying a car, that's just ruining it. ???

That Cortina ‘hatch’ is an interesting one, it must have took a shit load of work, could pass for some bizarre South American version nobody has heard of.

Reminds me a bit of that Marina Hatch? Is that still on the road?

I know the guy that built that Cortina hatch,

He's big into classic Ford's and owns quite a few.

He owns a body shop.

Took me a while to spot that Rover was a 2 door. That counts as 'well done' in my book!

When I was about 11/12 I got Max Power, Fast Car or Revs sometimes as they had some interesting free gifts.

I remember fitting a free sun strip that came with one to my Dads Xantia Activa ?

But back to the point, you dont see the weird stuff they all thought looked great, I remember the 'Jap Look' phase where they all fit badly made fiberglass Veilside looking wide mouth bumpers to everything from R5s to Saxos, then MK4 Golf Headlamps seemed to be fitted to everything, and so did TSW Venoms.

I'll have to see if my parents still have all the old magazines to see if I can find some of the worse ones ?

I didn't even notice while I was taking the photos; I just had this nagging sense of something being not quite right.

It's 100% this. Far more cars are on finance so no mods allowed.

It probably sounds daft given i have a car with so many 'mods' to get insurance for it requites a 45 minute phone call for each quote to discuss them all, but i'm not really that into modded cars. Subtle things like a small suspension drop, wheels, engine swaps etc, fine. But the whole bodykit, big exhaust, huge stereo thing? nah.

I saw the shift first hand as admin on a fiat owners club, our events almost died off overnight from it. It used to be that we'd go to shows, out on drives etc with things like Cinquecentos, Puntos, Bravos etc and there'd be a mix of standard, OEM+, what i'd call practical mods (like my Cinq with bigger engine, bigger brakes etc) and the OTT crowd who'd stick a bodykit on and air suspension....just because, and even though each car wasn't to everyones taste, it'd still be good to seem them in the flesh, talk to the people who'd made them, find out what they'd done (and why). What had broken, what they'd fixed, what they still needed to do etc, It'd be a good laugh and many great days out were had.

Then it suddenly changed on our site (basically over the space of a year) to people just buying Grande Puntos on finance and whilst they still showed up to the events the first few times, the talk had changed from what people did to the cars or what they'd like to do and what they'd fixed onto who'd got a better deal on finance, whether it was under warranty and what they'll look at next when their finance was up.

For me, modifications have to add "class" and increase usability.  "Class" is a bit like"Cool" but not so susceptible to the whims of fashion.

The essence of a VW pickup is go-anywhereness, for which ground clearance is essential. (See the pineapple'd van in front)  I'd  prefer steel wheels.

IMG_2608.thumb.jpeg.afb2ec4d1e64781feb9936fc8ccfb214.jpeg

Go-anywhereness subverted for the track.  I hope that isn't really a winch. Again, bin the wheels and use LR steels. Lose points if not road registered.

"Lemon Squash" is a survivor from the days of Street Machine, although it had single headlamps at the time IIRC.

And the most radical of all, this has appeared in the eBay Tat thread a couple of times this week.

"Street Addict" is also still around, albeit with the post-rape plate UVS547. Seen here in 1985.
