I didn't know there were any of those in the UK. Great spot!

He got if from a museum in the States, I can't remember which State he said. He's got it road worthy and is now driving it like it should be.

Some more pictures of it from local shows. It is a thing of beauty, love the little details like the indicators matching the grille.

Front grille looks very tight-lipped. Was cooling an issue?

Most of the air flow comes from under the front bumper with some kind of air scoop iirc.

He's either a very small man or the car is bigger than you'd think .

Plenty of W201 and W124 Mercedes around, with the former battling it out with the Golf Mk2 as the most commonly seen classic. This is the first W123 I am spotting here though, and it's a well preserved one!

Looking at the photos, this might even be a US-spec car!

Easy mistake to make at a quick glance

As I was leaving work this morning I had to wait before pulling out as there was what looked like a Daf variomatic estate, on foreign plates, coming up the road.

No pics to determine whether it was or wasnt unfortunately.

Not sure what to make of this , looks a bit Singer/ Magnus Walker.

But when you check it online it comes back as :

Make : 911 Targa Sports.

Model :  -

Colour: Red

Year: 1979

First reg: April 1980

Capacity : 2994cc

Never been MOT’d.

No mention of Porsche at all ,  maybe on some dodgy kit car logbook.  Whatever, it would seem to be a ringer.

Looks like an old 911 Targa to me. Im not seeing anything there that suggests it wouldnt be.

Definitely not red though.

These things really do have tin foil body panels. A decent fart would cave the wing in, this one had been parked by touch like an old Parisian Rena and the rust was only been kept at bay by the graff paint.

Exactly.  It looks like an early 70’s Targa.

it would be registered as

Make: Porsche

Model: 911 Targa ( not Sports)

instead of this ;

Although it belongs to some Hooray that owns a watchmaking company so you’d have thought he’d have the money to make a more convincing job of other dodgy logbook.  On social media he reckons he’s “ aged” a white 3.0Targa to do this…

Time for me to leave this here again:

The DVLA and its forebears will put all manner of shite down in the make and model field, particularly with an imported car. I had a MAKE: PANHARDDYNAX once. I wouldn't use how a car is registered on the DVLA as any indication that there's been funny business.

Even if it's not a real Porsche, then maybe '911 Targa Sport' really is the correct description of it, based on 1979 oily bits. Life's too short to worry about this shit man, just let the guy drive round in his old car and enjoy himself, he's not causing grief to anyone.

Full Ghia spec - though you'd have thought today would be just perfect to unfurl the rear-mounted rollerblind and shade the interior from the rays pouring in through the back hatch. But no. Maybe the owner's waiting for the thermometer to hit 50°C before cracking it open.

Still, clearly a much-loved Escort in daily use - APPROVED.

due to how the DVLA system works in coded form, you cant have a custom model, full stop

you can have a custom make inputted into the system in fully free handed lettered form,

but the model can only be in coded form and if a code does not exist for it it cant be inputted in the model field on the V5/Vehicle record (and for their to even be a Model code in the first place, there has to be a make code first)

so if you have something weird that exists in no coded form, thats when you get everything squashed into the Make field like so Harding is the make and "Model IV" is the well the Model! but you simply cant have "Model IV" in the model field because no code exists for it (and no make code exists for Harding for their to be a Model code to be underneath it)

Screenshot 2022-03-19 at 16.48.57.png

so anything weird/obscure/not in mass production when the DLVA computer was setup in the 1970's will get recorded as 1 line in the make field if you force it through

so they could have Porsche 911

but under the Porsche make code there is no model code for "911 Tagra sports" (only 911 Turbo Tagra sports) so someone probably forced it through if it was not registered like that from the get go

and thus creating the "strange" looking record

a prime example of this

is the Proper make code for a true Thames Ditton AC, like a Genuine AC Cobra is: Z0

but this  decodes to "AC (ELECTRIC)" (because someone at the DVLA fucked up the lookup table but thats another story, back in the 80's it would properly decode to just "AC")

and I have seen keepers of proper thames Ditton AC's force a change with the DVLA because they look at their V5c see "AC (ELECTRIC) and think their car is registered wrong (when in-fact AC (ELECTRIC ) is actually correct!), and try and force through how they think their car should be registered take for example this AC 3000ME, and they end up with the record a mess and everything squashed onto the Make line, because thats the only place the DVLA can custom input something

image.thumb.png.8908959e2f59e7c28ba9182ae08af2d5.png

as others said nothing about its record look wrong to me, I cant comment on the car itself, but the DVLA record looks fine to me, nothing wrong or dodgy about it

just someone probably was not happy their V5 only said "Porsche" or only said "Porsche 911" and tried to force it through the full model name, thus forcing the DVLA to treat the vehicle as non coded vehicle

the hierarchy of the DVLA system is such that if you register vehicle and its make exists in coded form, but its model does not, the DVLA will properly register the vehicle in its coded make form, and drop the non coded model

before they resort to cramming everything into the make field in custom form

which is why for example @Kiltox's Fiat Panda 30 is just registered as a "Fiat" by the DVLA https://autoshite.com/topic/43095-italian-stallion-kiltox’s-1982-fiat-panda-30/page/7/?tab=comments#comment-2570937

and again this is why @barrett has his weird examples, because none of those exist in coded form, so the DVLA are forced to cram it all into the make field, its the only place the DVLA people can freely write what they want

If you want to know a bit more I have done a small writeup on the DVLA's coded system here :) https://autoshite.com/topic/23298-93-mondy-thread-k-reg-foi-update/page/53/?tab=comments#comment-2531439
