Picked this up for £4 at a little antiques/collectibles shop in town yesterday:

IMG_8614.thumb.JPG.4ab1b9cba9ca712815fb097318cdb0ac.JPG

I already have the original version with the fantasy cab, but this was straight enough to make a useful display stand for late '70s Superfast.

Photos taken outside the recently-closed local Vauxhall dealership. I believe it's the site of a longstanding garage which sold Vauxhall for many years, and also Bedford back in the 1960s/70s. Whether they offered TMs I don't know, probably just HA, CF and TK, but it's nice to think one of them might have made a delivery here back in the day.

The shop also had a shoebox full of boxed mid '80s Corgis, mostly the 1:64-ish cars/vans like Renaults 5 Turbo and Trafic, Rover SD1 etc,  but also a couple of the trucks (Volvo and Scania from memory). I don't know if he was up for selling them individually, but he had a price of £70 on the lot.

Progress also being made on the Monogram '57 Chevy rebuild:

IMG_8617.thumb.JPG.63a02e4413086b4fb2bd128a2a33c589.JPG

Most of the foil brightwork has been done, it went OK. A bit of silver paint required on the badges etc.

IMG_8619.thumb.JPG.0f5c4b9a75a6956ad0332cf5a9dc6a9a.JPG

I think I'm going to use these Centerlines from another Monogram kit, with semi-gloss clear to dull the shine - I don't recall them being polished back in the '80s. It'll sit a bit higher at the back as befits an older custom.

No - I have seen them polished but it doesn't look right, Centerlines should have a brushed/spun finish like a moon disc

FB commenter suggested Pontiac J2000. Open to interpretation I guess - they had a version with Pontiac stickers though

I might be slightly mad but I can't bring myself to cancel the Corgi club subscription. They're just lovely things, and although this Thunderbird features no opening parts, it does have lovely compliant suspension and an easily-lost driver

I had to steel myself and cancel after I got the Monte Carlo Mini, but couldn't really justify the expense even though there are some I'd love, like the T Bird and Mustang, but also several I don't really want or still have in pretty good original condition.

I didn't know Corgi made a Westminster, my dad had one when I was tiny (see page 3 of Family Snaps with your old car in background thread). My toys mostly ended up like yours by the sound of it, they really got played with!

1st toy fair of 2022 happened this morning, all the usual suspects there (including @andrew e)

Picked up a handful of bits from the 50p tubs and some for a bit more - this is probably the most unusual - Shovel Nose, incomplete copyright date, no patent number and a non-standard colour. I believe this is a colour trial, sadly it's lost its roof but I may be able to cannibalise a red/yellow one and match the paint. Typically I just sold my spare ones

Final post about the toy fair- prices are all over the place. A couple of sellers had nice items but wanted eye-watering prices for them - then you get oddly cheap stuff, that Dinky Dyane was £2 but he wanted to charge £5 for three loose Matchbox (some were OK but nothing to get the heart racing). Normal Hot Wheels from the last couple of years? £3. Premium? £2

20220206_123626.thumb.jpg.ac9f8c4d021788d1f748ce69d967f824.jpg

I bought it just for the Real Riders.

eBay prices have gone through the roof, and I mean for auctions not crack-pipe BIN listings.

I'm glad the toy fair and boot sale season is starting again, think I'll be snapping up anything remotely interesting and flipping it!

There’s one in Doncaster in a few weeks, might look it up, always thought there would be no bargains at these events?

You just never know. I suppose it's unlikely that every seller will be an expert in everything, hence picking up some absolute bargains from people who didn't know what they had - but also people taking the piss with what they think will pay the mortgage for them.

There's always some really nice stuff on display if you're willing to pay for it

Posted

It's always worth trying to haggle a bit if you see something you like. Some sellers will, some won't. Negotiated a couple of times at the boot sales that way, especially if you knew you'd seen the same thing a few times on the trot.

I can't believe nobody's picked up on this.  We're not looking at a Westminster here, unless Austin renamed some models for foreign markets.  What Corgi made was a Cambridge.  Dinky did a Westminster; stand them side by side and you'll see the difference!

Well found, it should restore nicely.

I’m famously a tight bastard so I’d be in the 50p/£1 boxes, most of my collection are 50p to a couple of quid jobs, the antique stuff, lovely as it is doesn’t hold much appeal to me!

You'd have thought either Mr. Spoor or myself might have picked up on that since I believe we're the only two on here who actually own Westminsters, albeit not that shape.

In other news, I find myself another year older today. My splendid partner (who's almost certainly a bit too good for me) certainly came up with the goods this morning. Wasn't expecting this.. The 504 in particular is a beauty.

600?  Bollocks, that's a 500, so much a favourite of mine that when I was young and flexible, and the cars were cheap, I owned three of them!  I didn't even know Bburago made one, although it shouldn't be any surprise.
