Injury's sustained from radio vol / tuner spindle's was a thing in 1970's accidents.
BL tried to address this in their SRV2 concept vehicle. The facia design for the Mk2 Marina was a direct lift from the safety concept prototype
Can't remember the exact logic of why a passenger was more expendable in a crash, but hey - they tried!

20 years ago today my mum, dad and I went down to buy this in Southampton, my second earliest memory at just after two years old.

139,050 miles later its still going strong. This car took me to pre-school and I'm now driving it to work every day, hence why it's rather special to me!

(Yes this is an old picture, the car got absolutely pelted with bird shite today ruining any chance of a reasonable photo).

This poor R8 has at some stage been given a set of truely dire Poundland wheel trims. That, awful tyres and an eXhaust blow added to the vibe of neglect and decay. (Plus danger as @Ghosty dated one at 26 years young. )
#wheeltrimnerd A ‘94 sli would have from the factory a set of lattice pattern trims with a full on rover badge in the centre. Not moulded as part of the body of the trim but a full on gell badge with Viking long boat detail. (Phwarrr)
Long before project drive they seemed to want to chuck extra detail in with facelifts and not remove it. Anyway I found some of these locally and shod it with a new set of covers at each corner at the same time (kumho ecowings)......

Well. It's been a very, very, very, very long time since I had something French in my life.
After scouring ebay for quite some time and being put off by intergalactic mileages and just stupid prices for piles of potential shite, I have done the entirely AS thing and bought one of these:
    Yes, a white 1996 Renner Espace Mk2.
It has low 80K on the clock, a few foibles such as a temperamental passenger window, a heater control that only likes to be on '4', a back box that needs top have its clamp loosened and the back box twisting slightly to be better aligned, a couple of very small holes in the front part of the exhaust, an oil leak from somewhere higher up on the engine and a knackered clutch.
The car will be taken to the Enfield Mr Clutch in 2 weeks time to be sorted, the clutch is on order as we speak.
The Big Frenchie will have its rear seats removed, the carpet cleaned/replaced if really shite. The rear windows will be heavily tinted, LED lighting fitted in the back, reversing sensors fitted, the car will be serviced and fitted with new hoses, temp sensor and thermostat to reduce longer distance travelling stresses. Might also replace the shocks fore and aft.
DAB radio fitted, a 12v fridge obtained and perhaps a split charging system too. Anyone willing/able to do that for me as electrical stuff that isn't fitted to a small Triumph gives me the heebies.
It'll be a weekend/week escape vehicle, plus it is also pretty practical as well.
It will need a good clean also.

    Nice.
I've got an R8 steel wheel and brand new (but old) Michelin tyre in my shed.
You're very welcome to it for nothing if you find yourself in East Devon.

    Got It in one!
@Ghosty not any r8 but a 216sli auto none the less.
It all began with a typical gumtree ad with a potatocam/ storm Dennis filter...

My eyes!!! Agreed those dreadful trims needed binning - but it was very cheap and had a long MOT.
When I got to the vendors he took a shining to my mk3 mondeo and seemed unphased by the list of issues I ran off to him. Yes we could do a deal if he so Fancied. Well some money my way thanks. OK I’m happy with that.... shook on it. Effectively I now have a car with a very long mot, with no mechanical issues and some cash.  What else? ITS A ROVER. It’s been a while (2014) but I feel at home in it. The Honda d plus auto box seem nicely matched and it’s a bit of a project too. My first action was to rid it of the dreadful wheel trims and source a set of those nice lattice ones with a full on proper rover badge in the middle. I need to shod it with a new set of covers as all are low/ cracked/ ancient. Check out the Goodyear NCT2- presumably dredged up from a local canal!

My curiosity has got the better of me and I’ve decided I’d quite like to sample a last-of-the-line SAAB 9-5. This has always struck me as one of the best looking cars on the road, even in the horrendous pov spec white that my neighbour has. The clincher however is when I had a sit inside - what a beautiful interior, the antithesis on modern shitty car/tablet hybrids. There is also the fact that the wife does not like SAABs and I do, which adds to the allure/likelihood of a tiff; anyway we will be leaving the UK in the next few years to go somewhere that no doubt has neither the availability or prospect of maintaining such an obsolete motor so I may as well do it now.

Idly looking through Autotrader shows the usual optimists looking for £5k +, however completed listings on Ebay shows a more sensible £2.5-£3.5k range. These cars actually seem to be holding up rather well compared to the 9-3s, with very frilly edges on display. I have identified a car coming up for auction at BCA in Derby on the 17th which I would take a punt on at the right price, but I’m not prepared to travel for a cheap sight unseen motor at auction (because I know from experience that’s not the way to spend way over the odds on a fucked shed because it seems a better option than buying a full price train ticket home 🥴)

Anybody local to Derby BCA planning to go to the auction on the 17th? I’m sure it’s a chod-hunter’s paradise right enough! Alternatively does anyone have a BCA Online account that can do distance bidding? I’m not in the trade so not eligible for an Online account apparently.

Where to begin? Long before storm Dennis was a thing I’d planned to take my lads on a road trip-Tavistock-Bolton(parents)-IWM DUXFORD (planes galore)- longleat safari park and back to tavistock with a B &B over a few nights en route.
    What car to take?
Modus- noisy gearbox in 3/4/5 and a bit of an annoying initial flat spot occasionally from low revs. Otherwise seemed fine (!)
mondeo- sometimes the starter will spin but not engage, rocking it in gear sorts it. Drivers window taped up. Neither of which was ideal in a safari park.
So we took the modus. The less* flakey option.
Off we drove through massive wind and rain and the modus handled it well, right until in rural Cambridgeshire when the Brakes failed. No pedal pressure, and an ever more noisy gearbox.  No breakdown cover either. And thanks to the unique way the modus is packaged @SiC I could not find evidence of anything brake related under the bonnet  (I foolishly expected to find a fluid reservoir, silly me)
Had the car been worth more and without a potentially game ending problem brewing on the horizon already (the ever more noisy gearbox) things may have been more complex. As it was I decided pretty much on the spot that I needed to ditch it.
2 kids, very far from home and a steaming shit pile of a car. Using an e bay search centred on the imperial war museum Duxford (where id managed to limp it) I found the most local cheapy I  could. Specifically a trader who would accept the dead car ahead of me sending the v5  via picture message once I got home. Would they exist within limping distance? A certain level of luck, and trust on their behalf saw me leave rural Cambridgeshire later that morning with a far more likeable car.

Even discounting the gearbox not sounding like a coffee grinder, and having actual brakes; it’s just nicer to be in than that modus. Im usually quite mechanically sympathetic but I got a certain about of satisfaction from bouncing it off the Rev limiter in second and ramming the brakes/ handbrake on as I limped it over to the vendors.

So to the new jalopy. It’s done a genuine 57k and is a 1.6 k series. Normally that would feel risky but not after the steaming shit pile of a modus I’ve gladly left behind. To paraphrase an ad; I’m relaxing (as it’s a rover)

Last rites. (Taken a month earlier but prophetic)

There are worse places to have a car die.

    Hi Guys ,
After about 6 years absence I am back . Big thanks to Beko1987 and Chaseracer for managing to sort my forgotten email address and password .
Anyway a lot has happened in 6 years and the cars we (my other half and I ) have seemed to accumulate is a total of 43 vehicles .
I am completely out of control and off the rails . I just can't say no !
Anyway to start off with this was a car I rescued last year . A 1979 Datsun 160j sss.
She is incredibly rotten but I am slowly finding the panels I need but these things take time with obscure cars and of course a lot of money .
These cars are very rare and I believe in single possibly just in to double figures.
The colour is fantastic . I can't think of a nicer colour than turquoise .
When the weather gets better we are going to get her running .
Next car to mention will be ....
    Cheers
