Dad’s motors.

My dad is 74 this year, his motoring history is pretty varied. He’s had Mini 1000, Cooper s 1071, 1275, spitfire, gt6, capri 3.0s, then divorce struck and he had a maxi, princess, TR7, Datsun 180b sss, Volvo 340, 940, mondeo mk1, LR disco 1 & 2, jaguar x-type 2.5, quashwhy? & E280d. I’ve missed some but I don’t thing any of merit.

 

His favourites definitely the capri 3.0s in signal? Green. I remember waking up in the boot with him smiling and handing me a bucket and spade whilst mum was still asleep in the passenger seat.

 

That and a banana yellow TR7 that he used to jump the local humpback bridge in. Great times.

From memory, within my lifetime, my dad had:

- Saab 900

- Ford Escort mk5

- Ford Escort mk6

- Renault Savannah

- Citroen Xantia

- Volvo 940

- Citroen C5 saloon (at the same time mum had a C5 estate)

- Volvo 850 saloon

- Volvo 850 estate

 

The exact order eludes me, and I've probably forgotten some, I'd ask mum but I'm pretty sure the only car she can reliably identify is a Dacia Duster

I own more cars now than he had put together.

His first transport was I think a BSA model unknown, replaced by a new Triumph Tiger 110 in kingfisher blue ( he was a rocker & had a DA til day he died).this was sold to get a mortgage in 62.

His first car was an early mini 2nd hand in the early 60's, replaced by an early 60's beetle in 67ish ( my mum hated it) replaced in 70 with a 69 Corsair 2000 GT.

Replaced in 73 with a 72 cortina 1.6L that was traded in for a brand new Mk5 1.6L in June 81, I still have this one.

The last 3 all came from the same ford dealership in Sheffield 

Brook Shaw ford of Gibraltar street, the building is still there but has been several other businesses since the 00's , after it was bought & relocated by Lookers ford.

My late Pater had company cars from the late 1960’s when I made an appearance, I remember a brace of MK2 Cortina’s followed by a MK3, then a MK1 Cavalier, Talbot Solara, and a brace of MK2 Cavalier’s. Then he no longer had company cars and a MK2 Escort estate did for about a year when it was replaced by an early XR3, then a Sierra 2.3 Ghia estate, BMW E28 528l, Peugeot 405D, and finally a Renault Clio.

My dad is 85 and has stopped driving. I also own more cars now than he had in total.

Cars in order as best I can work out:

His first car was definitely an Austin Somerset

My dad died in 2016 but he rattled through quite a few cars!

My mum was never much of a driver, but she briefly had a Triumph Herald in the mid seventies, and a Fiat Panda 1000S in 1987-9.

How sexist of me.

Mums cars including up to the green Capri went seriously downhill.

Brown mini clubman estate that caught fire under the dash and melted her tights.

Perodua nippa blue.

She died quite young and the three nippas were still on the drive as she wouldn’t part with them.

Also dad had scooters too alongside his cars. Ignorance here but think Vespa.

My old mans first was an Armstrong Siddeley Hurricane rag top. Don't know what year it was.

P2 Rover 14 till 1964. Red leather and no heater. Winters were a bit grim. 

Brand new Mk1 Ford Cortina De Luxe. Vinyl seats and we all know what they are like when it's a bit warm.

1968 brand new Cortina Mk2 1600E. 

Then a new Mk1 Escrote 1300 sport.

Left home so don't know what he had after. A bit of a falling out.

Before I was born, the cars my Dad had (from what I recall him mentioning) from the early '60s when he passed his test were,

Then, after I appeared in 1974,

A horrible Mk1 Mini with GRP flip front as a stop-gap

Another Escort Mk1 estate, again bought as a stop-gap but ended up staying for three years

Nissan Sunny 1.3 DX (his and mum's first brand new car)

Nissan Micra 1.2 LS (proper dealer special with glass pop-up sunroof, lairy graphics and aftermarket alloy wheels)

Renault Megane 1.4 RN (didnt last long, they didnt get on with it, after the Escort)

Renault Megane Mk2 1.6 Dynamique. Dad loved this one, had all the toys including the electric twin glass sunroofs, sadly he died about 6 months after getting it and it was too big for Mum on her own, so she traded it for a Clio Mk2 Dynamique and has had small supermini type stuff since,

A Mitsubishi Colt followed the Clio, then,

Ford Ka (the later, Fiat 500 based one)

Nissan Micra K13 (she had two of those!)

And now, still driving happily and capably at 78, she's on her third Hyundai i10, she thinks they're brilliant.

Both my parents were 17 when I was born, so nearly all my Dad’s cars were in my lifetime.

He had an e93a Anglia followed by a Popular then a Prefect which he rolled with six passengers on board, including my Mum who was 6 months pregnant with me at that point. Technically my first car crash. Also, thinking about it, I was probably conceived in one of those Sit up and Beg Fords- not that I want to think about it and I’m not going to ask my Dad!
He then had a green lowlight Morris Minor Convertible which they used to put my pram, with me in it, on the back seat - not a carry cot, the whole thing with wheels. How I made it to 6 months let alone 60 years old, is a miracle.

The the first car I actually remember a white 2 door Morris 1000 followed by a black 4 door Split screen Moggy. I remember going with him to tow our neighbour’s  E Series Cresta home . Me and my mate Gary Avery went in the Cresta and MrAvery let us take turns steering  clambering all over the big bench seat and his lap whilst he puffed away at his pipe. I must have been 6. 
Then I remember a period where we didn’t have a car , my Dad worked at Midland Red by then so free buses, he also borrowed my Grandads Herald or Triumph 1300 a lot.

This will be a long post, brace yourself. I’ve lost my Dad fairly recently, so can’t ask him to validate what I remember, anyway, here goes:

Hillman Minx Californian, I’ve posted photos of it on here before, when he was in the USAF and stationed in Norfolk.

Chevrolet Bel Air, can’t remember if 56 or 57 but was blue and white.

On return to uk he stayed with GM and the Vauxhall Victor, burgundy FE first I know of, there were others before.

Than it was a metallic green FD, which was sold to make way for his first company car, a Cortina Mk3 1.6L Auto, in signal orange.

Next was a 1977 Cortina Mk4 1.6L Automatic, in strato silver, followed three years later, by. Mk5 1.6base auto estate in red.

Then he had a Vauxhall Carlton 1.8 estate on an A reg, before a Sierra 1.8GL estate auto, D reg, then another Carlton 1.8L Auto due to promotion. 
Early retirement followed with F reg Honda Accord auto, then H reg Accord auto, then K reg  Honda Legend, his favourite, until he drove my Senator 🙁

Then it was a high spec Accord, then a Corolla then Jazz. God bless you Dad.

Dad's first car was in bought 1954 for  £15. It was a shabby 1933 Austin 7 (AGX423)  with rusty door bottoms and a leaking slide-back roof panel. In 1959 he sold it to an American serviceman for £25.  The chap lost it on an icy road about 6 weeks later. It was written off.

The A7 was replaced by a 1954 Hillman Minx (OYH420).  It was sold prior to him going on a  1 yr unaccompanied posting to RAF Gan in 1961.

On his return he bought a 1958 Riley 1.5 (VHO484) in 1962.

In late 1963 he part exchanged the Riley for a Vauxhall Victor FB estate (NML925).  We went to the South of France twice in it before he was posted to Germany in 1966. We all went over there for 3 years, taking the Victor with us. It was given the BFG reg. BL670B.  The Victor was sold to a fellow serviceman at RAF Bruggen in 1967.

Whilst still in Germany he looked at Hillman Hunters and Ford Cortinas available at concessionary rates to serviceman. He was not impressed. Instead, he bought a 1966 RHD Ford Taunus 17m estate from a German businessman who often made trips to the  UK, hence RHD.  CG854B was the BFG reg number.  We toured in Germany, France and Northern Italy in that one, dragging our Astral 12ft caravan also bought out there. On returning to the UK in 1969, the Taunus received its first UK reg: ALM505H.

The Taunus was a very nice car but prone to rust.  Dad sold it and bought a  Vauxhall Victor FE (SXE970L) in 1972.  I left home in 1969.

His last cars were Citroen GSAs.  One was written off in an accident but replaced with another one.  He loved them.  He died in 1986 and my mum who had never passed her test began to learn to drive.  She was 59. She did not get on with the GSA and, many tests later in driving school cars finally passed and bought a brand new Nissan Micra which she drove all over the UK until she died in 1992.

My dad tried to teach her to drive in the Hillman Minx.  We were at RAF Bicester at the time. We used to go to the disused concrete strips/runways at the nearby closed RAF Finmere.  She was not safe to be let loose on public roads.  I remember being in the back seat and treated to violent, bucking starts and crunched gear changes. She did not really understand clutches.  Dad did not try again until we were in Germany with the Taunus.  Mum managed to break the column change  gear  lever clean off.  Dad was furious.  He got an RAF technician to re-attach it by brazing.  He did not try to teach mum again.

My parents were never especially arsed about changing cars, and did it as little as possible.

Dad's cars:

First car was a Mk3 Cortina 2 litre, in brownze. His lasting memory is spending ££ having it resprayed and then twatting it against the garage door the day he bought it home. It left quite the impression, as for nearly 40 years he completely stopped being arsed about how shabby his cars looked. Ran it for a few years until one of the pistons made a bid for freedom.

His second car was a Chrysler Avenger estate, in lurid orange. This was the car I was bought home from the hospital in, which might explain a lot. Died of galloping rot shortly after I was born, although I don't think the two events are related.

His next car was probably my favourite of all, a silver 1982 Mk2 Granada 2.3 L. This was the car we had all my childhood family holidays in, and I remember it very fondly, paired up with our NR Nimrod trailer tent on wonderful, care-free camping holidays to the New Forest. Rot was beginning to creep in, and the gearbag was getting tired, so it ended up being sold to one of my dad's colleagues who we think ultimately took it around the dirt oval. Pity.

Then he bought a doom blue Mk3 Granada 2.0 GL. Despite having such luxuries as electric front windows, central locking, and even a sunroof, never really gelled with it like we did the Mk2. Soldiered on until 1999 when it clocked up an MOT failure sheet that would cost more than a replacement car to rectify.

Replacing it was a 1994 Rover 620SI in Caribbean Blue. Probably my second favourite after the Granada, this one took us on holidays to the south of France. This one left an impression, and I really want to try a Rover 600 again someday. Eventually its Honda roots made themselves known, in the form of corroded rear arches. And with a tendency to rot from the inside out, it was curtains for this classy saloon when its 2004 MOT came up.

Dad has made his way up the corporate ladder by this point, so we ventured into the world of nearly new cars. In this instance, a 2003 Renault Laguna 2.0 Dynamique, in a gorgeous metallic blue. He really liked this car, even with the electrical niggles, and he ended up putting nearly 200k on it over the course of the next 7 years. Unfortunately the gearbox decided it didn't want to transmit power any more and committed suicide.

Having liked the Laguna so much, he went ahead and bought another, a 2010 Laguna GT 180 4Control. Even more niggles than the last one, but he loved its 180bhp diesel engine and its very high spec. This one, although it has a few dents, still exists and is driven by my brother now. It was also around this time that he actually started taking pride in the apperance of his vehicles again, ending decades of untreated scratches and odd-coloured panels. Looks like the wounds from the Cortina finally healed...

His current car is a 2018 Mazda6 2.0d estate, in a lovely metallic red. Has an interior which feels like it's from a premium car, a lovely sculpted dash with light coloured leather seats. He loves this one, it's the only car he's ever had that he insists on dealer servicing, and he treats the leather twice a year. Reckon this one will see him out, assuming the engine doesn't explode. Mazda claim to have sorted out the diesel grenading issue for the 2018 model year, but we shall see.

Good grief, the similarities are uncanny. I remember cowering in the back of an out of control Viva HC estate as my Dad desperately tried to reach across to hit the brakes when my Mum was learning. He wasn’t the best instructor 😆

Thanks for that😀!   It's even uncannier.  I'd forgotten that dad sold the thirsty Victor FE and bought a bright metallic green Viva HC estate when leaving the RAF on reaching 55.   They toured France in it.  Possibly why it was GSAs from then onwards.

In the early years in Belgium, Dad also had use of cars that were not owned or wholly owned by him, occasionally they were garage cars or cars he bought jointly with a mate to sell on for profit;

The Subaru DL/GL, Justy and an Opel Vectra A (Vauxhall Cavalier) which he had for quite a while as I think he was quite fond of it were all from "La Gantoise" Chrysler/Subaru dealership that my Dad first worked for. My Uncle had worked for various Chrysler dealerships so helped get my Dad a job there.

I remember he also got offered a white Mercedes 190d but in typical Fatha_Sterling fashion, not wanting something too nice or probably "old man" he turned it down.

Mother;

As above she had the 1990 Fiesta until the late 90s when it got crashed by her then partner, then she shared for a while a;

1989 Rover 820Si (auction bought)

Then after parting company with her partner, he went and sold the Rover from out under my Mum's nose and much to my utter chargrin. I could have started out driving a Mk1 Rover 820Si instead of a flipping Micra! 😤

For a while after she didn't have a car until she started her new job in Birmingham  and went and out and bought, brand new, from Reg Vardy in Perry Barr;

1998 Nissan Micra Ally.

A car that is known here and has been pictures or featured in the background of some of my pics over the years. We still have it albeit in storage after it got hit whilst in stationary traffic.

This was replaced with the roffle-win;

We didn't have a car for large parts of my childhood but Dad did have a few on and off for short periods, all of which one step away from the scrap man. It wasn't until the Micra that he had a full time car

Mazda Montrose (kept for 2 weeks and was the catalyst for Dad to stop with the end of life shite and buy a brand new on 0%finace no deposit )

Nissan Micra K10 (our first brand new car)

He also had a Mk2 Transit , Mk2 Astra and ex BT Escort van for work through the mid 90s to early 2000s too

He and mum separated and she kept the Micra and he had the Escort Van. I'd also left home by then 

Since then he's had a number of sub £500 shit heaps (Corolla, Vectra x2, Astra, Fusion)

from that list you'd think he was a mechanical genius keeping old bangers on the road but he doesn't know one end of a socket set from the other

My parents were bikers, so when I came along things had to change. They didn’t pass their tests until my youngest brother was coming along in 1991! They only ever (even to this day) have one car between them and change as infrequently as possible. The first couple of proper cars were my Uncle’s cast offs.

Aaand that’s it! Yep I own more cars currently than they ever have! 

My Grandad’s list would be more interesting as he was the petrol head who inspired me! But I only have a few of those in my memory like the Morgan 3 wheeler, Escort XR3i and the Hyundai Scoupe which was his last car which he bought new in 1994 and kept until he could no longer drive. I do recall though that in about 2002 when he was riddled with Parkinson’s and my gran was buying a car to ferry him about that he was still trying to persuade her to get a Ford Puma rather than a Ford Ka!
