Cars you have owned that suddenly disappeared from the roads

The Original shape Mercedes A class, dad owned 2 and loved them...I owned the Bog standard 140 classic, and must admit they do feel and drive like a much bigger car

I think the title of the thread is more "Where the feck has all the time gone and I'm now suddenly realising I'm getting old"

I know this is a bit "rich" coming from me given im only 24, but I very much had a case of this when I played a video game called "The Getaway" fairly recently again

its a game I used to play quite a lot when I was growing up, and I enjoyed it very much because it was basically "GTA" but set in then contemporary London

as @Ghosty said, "Guy Richie the video game"

and upon playing it through again recently, it really hit me all the cars in that game that you just dont see anymore (the getaway was notable for all the cars/vehicles in the game being actual real life vehicles, so of course I played through all the missions in FX4's and Routemaster buses :)

I mean the very first mission in the game has you driving a green Laguna to give chase to a Rover 75 if thats not autoshite the video game I dont know what is!

anyways I think the biggest one that stuck out to me is the Citroen C15 and other such boxy car derived vans, I remember those being everywhere here in Central London, but now you really dont see them anymore

and the Bedford Rascal type vans also

I've not seen an early Rascal or Suzy Carry for a good while now. There are a couple of the later shape Supercarry's around here and only one other Hijet/Porter apart from mine. Though I did see a yellow one yesterday from the train at a garage premises, signwritten for that business so probably still in use.

Vauxhall Viva HCs and 1990 Audi 90s seem to a bit thin on the ground. Not so Mk1, Mk2 Escorts, Pug 205GTis and Mk1 MX5s.

e36 BMW's, in particular, the tourings. And by 'disappeared' i mean nice ones.

The few that do still exist that come of for sale generally have interiors ripped out and welded diffs.

Seicento's as well. In particular, Sportings. Don't think i've seen one up for sale near me for at least 7 years.

Mk3 Mondeos are heading the same way, a few late leggy Pez ones pop up now and then, but all the diesels have long passed the point of rust/Clutch/DMF expense and been disposed of.

Mk3 Mondeo diesel… every cloud and that… 😂

Peugeot 405 s.

I had one of those.

And given they don't rot that badly, you'd think there'd be more still around. Folks just don't seem to want to drive older cars, or pay the odd garage bill. Scrappage scheme killed many, with PCP / finance addiction doing for the rest I reckon.

e36 BMW 325 tds - I had two. Bugger all left on the road, even by e36 standards. Although there are two festering on a drive in town. Thankfully I have more sense than restoration skills so I have resisted leaving a note. I still want another even though the e46 320d I got afterwards is a far better car, the big six diesel had charm.

Pug 406, 309, Citroen ZX, I keep an eye on the market because I would like another one day when time and space allows. Need to find that space and time soon if I want a chance.

Mk 3 mondeos seem to have all but disappeared- diesel ones quickly become uneconomical to repair.

Vectra C - you still see the odd one but they too seem to have disappeared.

I literally came here to mention the mk3. They were like London buses. EVERYWHERE. I had loads of them, and once I got rid of my last decent blue ST, I haven’t seen many since. A guy at the place I work has once though. But I don’t see many more. They’ve hit the age where either rust is settling in, or the engines not worth fixing. Shame, brilliant cars.

Policemen are looking awfully young these days.

This exactly. After driving for Stagecoach South West for 23 years on the bounce, I can say the same about bus drivers as well.

If we made a splinter thread of "cars you wish you could torch every time you see one" then those fuckers would be right at the top of the list 🤣

guessing I am still not allowed to post in threads like these? LOL

What about "cars you own whose manufacturer got corrupted on the DVLA database into a brand of mobility equipment" 😅🙂

Then put it all back together and find the starter motor doesn't work any more.

Mk2 Puntos - where have all the sporty yellow ones gone?

Mk2 Ibizas -         "            "        "     "          "              "           "          "     ?

Mk3 Puntos -      "            "        "     "          "       orange    "          "      ?

Mazda 6 GG '02 to '08 (estates in particular) - I've hardly noticed any others since I sold my Phantom Blue '06 TS2 estate 7 years ago. I'm surprised that they have vanished over such a short time, as mine was an excellent steer, very reliable and felt solid.

Come to think of it, the next-gen '07 to '12 Mazda 6 GH is becoming quite rare now.

Vauxhall Insignia A '09 to '17 - I've never owned one, nor do I plan on owning one, ever. But this is just an observation. Pre-'14-facelift cars are still everywhere. But most are now very tatty in the extreme with missing front badges, smashed bumpers, battered bodywork, filthy dog-eaten interiors and headlamps full of water. They will all fall away quickly together in the next 2 years by the looks of them.

One of my neighbours has just got one of those!  It's a white estate, think it says Sport on the back?

I think many of the diesels were killed off by their oil pump failure issue. Like Vectra/Mondeos, they get cheap enough to be hammered and neglected until they blow up.

With the ever increasing number of CAZ and ULEZ type zones, pre Euro 6 (2015) diesels will fall out of fashion fast and faster. Given so many humdrum cars of the 2000s/2010s were diesels, it'll wipe off many of that era car. Likewise the complexity of repair too. Then throw in when MOT stations start to have PN emissions testing, any of those have had their DPFs gutted will become instant scrap. The high liability of buying one that has been gutted will make them even more undesirable.

I think Vauxhall forgot about them the day after launch. I think I’ve only ever seen one.

Back to the OP, I've found one! Didn't think to look at C&C.  Ok, it's a 416, but it's otherwise spitting image of my departed 414... I love the 5 spokes and nightfire red is the best colour IMO

^am I being silly or is that just a fricking good looking car? :)

Sorely tempted, but it would involve getting rid of a car which I don't really want to do

£1500 is a bit more like it, but the MOT history seems a bit colourful so I'd want to know if the welding has been done to a sensible standard before parting with any more than a grand for it.

Smiley Transits. Had loads over the years and the earlier mk3/4. Some would argue that they are all mk3 and then facelifts of and can see their point but whatever. Round here they that were plenty are now all a rare sight.

Ulez, rust and people choring them for export or upgrading the engine of their blown up custom or mk8 have all played a part.

A bloke up the road from me runs a fleet of ice cream vans. Every few months a mint swb smiley turns up outside his house for a couple of weeks then returns a few weeks later with an ice cream body on. He is, presumably, fitting ice cream bodies from crusty smileys to them. He's obviously a fan.
