Esprit?

Esprits used Marina door handles and Citroen SM gearboxes. Does that count?

Bitron 2043018 central locking relay... used on Alfa 33, Maserati Biturbo, Ferrari 348 and 355, one or other of the Fiat range, IIRC the VW Golf Mk1 as well and no doubt several other cars as well...

Suitably obscure for my purposes.

Is this the biggest parts bin offender?

A re-skin range rover and sherpa headlights, maestro van rear lights, rover 800 interior bits, GM made door locks (but from what?)

Don’t forget the Metro clock and Range Rover pedal rubbers that still had RR on them , almost as annoying and half baked as Bentley T1 and T2’s still having a great big Roll Royce logo on the speedo, how much could it have cost to stick a little B logo over it?

Was going to post the same thing!, About 90% of a Disco is parts bin.

The actual shell and chassis of it is Range Rover, doors RR, Running gear a mix of RR and Defender, Front lights Sherpa, Rear Lights Maestro van, outer Handles Marina, Inners off Rover 100 (i think), All the switches, stalks and clocks are off of various Rovers, Power steering resevoir BMW,

Rover 45 facelift and the Pagani Zonda EVAP controls is another good one.

Rover group really were skint by then weren't they! That clock being a different colour backlight to the heating. All the buttons/switched are different styles and shapes. They didn't even get the heated seat controls moulded as the same colour as the rest!

Yes the M12 used the rear clusters, but don't forget the M12 used the Mondeo 2.5/3.0 engine with a couple of turbos strapped on.

Reliant Robins were a real parts bin special. Switches before 1992ish are 1100. After that Mini. Stalks and ignition barrel are Mini. Window winder handles are 1100. Internal door handles are Allegro. External handles Mini. Gear knob Metro. Boot lock is Metro. Hatchback tail lights are Escort MK4 van. Gas struts are early Fiesta. Rear wheels Mini. Filler cap Mini. Pre 96ish used Mini non-spacer  drums on the rear but only the drums. Post 96ish Robins used the Mini drum back plates too and were modified ones on the front. Brake rubber hoses are from a Series 3 Land Rover. Rear shocks are Mini too. There's lots of generic stuff too that's on a lot of British cars. 4 fuse fuse box, Lucas starter, SU carb, Lucas 45d dizzy.

I sort of knew this, but had never really "noticed" how similar they were til now. Would an RRC front end fit on a Discovery?

I think I heard about people doing something similar to that a while back and making their own "Strange Rovers" I'll try to find a pic as they looked quite neat.

Strange rovers! It's all coming back to me now, I remember reading this article years ago!!!

Land Rover Owner Article - The Strange Rover

edit: this one looks better, for some reason:

Strange Rover | Range rover supercharged, Land rover, Range rover classic

Edit 2: It's because the top one is an RRC with disco sides and roof, and the bottom is a disco with RRC front.

I want one

Hillman 'Arrow' Minx/Hunter tail lights on an Aston Martin DBS.

The Leyland Olympian and Tiger used the ubiquitous BL Indicator and Hazard Lamp switches.

Don't know about other Leyland Products; I think the Lynx used Leyland Truck parts from the Roadrunner and T45... 👍 👍 👍

Porsche Cayenne used VW door handles and, I believe, VW suspension components still with the VW logo cast into them.

Renault trucks use Volvo engines

Elise S1 used Vauxhall (Corsa?) switchgear.

The last Volvo FL before the Renault Premium Cab was used made use of contemporary Volvo V70 chrome door pull thingies.

I know this one is very specific, but a MK2 Focus uses Volvo parts in the rear armrest (and  probably elsewhere, too.)

Posted (edited)

I own a VW 1303 (type113) ,  a VW type2, a VW type53b  and a 944S - all have the same door handles, and amongst many other things, the Superbeetle & the Porsche share the same suspension front & rear and the Scirocco & bay share the cover for the washer bottle.

I remember back in the day seeing an Aston Martin V8 vantage, and it had the same internal door locks as my dad's avenger!

So how does this parts bin business work? Within a corporation I can understand but how do you go about ringing up a rival and ask politely if you can use their lights/door handles/steering rack in your next jalopy?

Do you have to pay a licence fee or contribute to the development?

Do you contact the original parts manufacturer? 'Hello, Aston Martin here, you know those locks you make for Hillman, can we have some too?'      'You mean those locks we and Hillman both spent £lots on developing? Yeah no probs'

Or did they just toddle down to the rivals dealers - 'Can I have 100 off side and 100 near side mirrors for my 'cough' Volvo V70?'

I've absolutely no idea how corporate companies go about using other manufacturers parts? The Volvo V70 mirrors came as a shock to me but it's really a thing, I had to look on the underside of the mirror to see for myself as I couldn't believe what the Aston Martin tech was telling me
