The grumpy thread

I loaned a car to a mate (at least I thought he was a mate) and the twat has gone and crashed it, apparently whilst pissed. To add insult to injury it turns out that he only has a provisional license (I've known the lad for ten years and he's always had / driven cars, so I had no reason to suspect he didn't have a full license) and that the insurance that I thought he had (as named driver on his other half's 206 with cover to drive other cars) therefore isn't valid.

I'm not too worried about the car itself as I didn't pay much for it, but I'm slightly concerned that whoever he crashed into (I don't know the details yet as the copper who dealt with the accident had gone off duty by the time I went in, and matey is being kept in overnight) might try to claim off my insurance. I don't know how that will work as my insurance obviously doesn't cover anyone else to drive so there's no reason why they should cover the claim, but third party insurance is a funny thing and they'll often pay up anyway, which will mean I'll lose my NCB. Also, if my insurance doesn't pay, is there a possibility that the other party (or their insurers if they're fully comp) could come after me to pay for the repairs?

One thing's for certain, that's the last time I do anyone any fucking favours.

That is a real shitter wuvvum. I'd be having a stong word with him if I was in your position (unless he is a big lad).

Hey Lord Sterling, was it Slade lane car spares? I've spent many a rainy Saturday mooching round that place. I once bought a Lada Riva from there for £40, drove round in it for a while with chain marks in the roof where they had lifted it down for me from on top of a Montego.

The very one. The Rover 800 owner bloke around the corner didnt even realise it was still going. Usually I use a couple of scrappies down Cradley Heath/Halesowen area, but owing to work/lack of time and not needing to collect more uneeded bits I havent been for qute a while, I only went as they had a few K11 Micras and a Rover 800 which had already gone.

What a shitbox Dave, what car was it?

T-reg Saab 9-3 2.0 non turbo - not one I've ever felt the need to post about on here...

That's a real bummer, I'd be grumpy too! I'd definitely supervise him paying the other party's bills out of his own pocket, once Plod lets him out. As for Craig's worries about his size, let me just say...

Is your car fixable, btw?

Wuv, the way I see it (as a bar room expert) is that you lent the Saab to your mate in good faith, and it was reasonable for you to assume that said mate had a full licence and was insured before letting him take the car away, so you haven't done anything wrong. It would be different if you knew he didn't have a licence or insurance. If anyone is going to get sued for the damage it will be your "mate". He's in the shit on his own on this one. Drink driving too, what a twunt!

The worst part for you is you will have to pay to get the car back from the recovery agent, either that or just let them keep it. In which case it should be you suing your pal for the cost of a car!

*edit*

Just re-read your post and how the mate is insured to drive any car on a different policy, I think in this case he will still be insured, atleast to pay for the other drivers damaged car, but the lack of a full licence will mean the cover gets knocked down to third party only.

I think its the poor sod who he crashed into who has the problem,as it's their insurance which will take a blow,as they were hit by a uninsured driver.Yes,you have lost a car,but don't have to make any claims for it at all - so I think you are safe insurance wise

According to the copper I spoke to they haven't impounded the car - it was still driveable so the officer just moved it to the side of the road, and once matey gets out I'm going to have to get the key off him and recover it myself. I haven't actually seen the car as yet so I don't know how bad the damage is, but if the police are happy to let me drive it home it can't be too terminal, so fingers crossed the damage to the other car won't be terminal either. I guess I'll find out in the morning.

I can't see you having to sort insurance Wuv, at the end of the day you could have lent him the car to fix for you or for him to look at because he has one himself and wants to work out where things go.

Luxury car company Bentley has unveiled an SUV, or sports utility vehicle, at the Geneva motor show.

The model is said to have been pushed through by chief executive Wolfgang Duerheimer, who was in charge of research and development at Porsche when it launched its now best-selling model, the Cayenne SUV.

Bentley would aim to sell 3,500 to 5,000 SUVs per year if it were approved for production, in addition to its current sales of some 7,000 per year.

5,000 of these bloody awful things every year? :?

Wuv, I would get over to Pepipoo and ask for advice. There is a reasonable chance the police may prosecute you for allowing him to use your car. A few years something similar happened to me, a so called mate with supposedly his own insurance got caught pissed on my motorbike. I ended up getting the same points and fine as him, 360 quid and six points. Still bitter after 20 years.

Folks over in Pepipoo will know the best way of dealing with it. I wouldn't trust a word of what he police say.

Well I spoke to matey last night after he got let out, and it turns out it wasn't quite as clear-cut as I thought. He was waiting to turn right out of a side road, driver coming from his right flashed to let him out so he started to pull out, then a biker came hooning down the outside of the queue of traffic to the right, clipped matey's front bumper and went down the road on his arse. Biker not seriously hurt, and the damage to the car is apparently limited to a scrape on the front bumper (haven't been down there to look yet). Matey was over the limit, but not shitfaced, and it doesn't look like it was a typical drink-driving accident.

Danblez, I might head over to Pepipoo depending if I hear anything from the police. I've been into the station to give a statement and they didn't say owt about me potentially being in trouble - presumably to get a successful prosecution they'd have to prove that I knew or ought reasonably to have known that he was driving with no licence / insurance? I've known the lad for ten years and he's always been driving for as long as I've known him, and he always had an insurance certificate with him in the glovebox of his cars (although I never examined it in detail), and I said as much in my statement.

Your friend needs to fill in the new keeper section of the cars V5, dated a couple of days ago.

FSO tshirt update of fail.

Went in the shop to get a look at these shirts. Sadly they are shitty Chinese knock offs. They have the FSO cars logo but underneath it says 'sports activity'. They are really bad quality and they want about £4 for them. Plus the woman in the shop was a bitch and made me wish I had the vocabulary to tell her that I would shop elsewhere because she was so rude. These ex-communists haven't quite got the hang of customer service yet.

Anyway, I am sorry.

Bit L8 4 that unfortunately - I already told the copper who first knocked on my door (before I knew anything about the accident etc) that it was my car but my mate was borrowing it...

Anyway, I've recovered the car, and the damage does indeed appear to be limited to a scrape on the bumper - the bumper isn't even cracked - so hopefully should be able to touch it in with a rattle can. No other damage to the car that I could see, and it drove fine.

Just watching Country File. I wonder what sort of punishment you'd get from the courts if you got several hungry Alsations and set them free on badger baiting wankers?

Wow, this is the first time I'd seen the GOM/P thread bumped off the front page. What are you all so cheerful for?

Anyway, to put it back where it belongs - some cnut smashed the nearside door window of the Transit today. Didn't take anything (there wasn't much in there to take) so probably just a random act of vandalism - which doesn't make it any less annoying. So instead of my planned evening playing with the Spacys I'm sat at home waiting for Plod to come and take a statement, and then I've got to go and fetch a replacement window from my mate whose boss has a Transit in for breaking.

I don't understand that at all. A rare car in good nick at a decent price. What's wrong with the British public? Too busy spluffing over boring old Granadas and Escorts, thats what.

Amen brother! Forget the herd mentality. This is a major slice of awesome for sod all cash really. Not quite sod all cash though, or I'd be able to afford it... *looks at bank balance.* A £1400 discount would be handy.

If it's any consolation Pete, I wish somebody would buy your 604 too - the fugging thing is seriously testing my resolve not to buy any more 4-wheeled tat.

A quick shufty round the interweb suggests you may just be a tad optimistic on the pricing, given the mileage and fuelling, good-looking motor though it is. IMHO, obv...

Slap it on the 'bay*, let it find its price? :|

*acknowledging fully the obvious & will-sapping negative possibilities this course of action may involve... :?
