The washing machine just died. Saving up money to fix the Mercedes looks harder than I thought.

So have you been washing car parts in it?😄

I will scrap the old washing machine and it's already loaded, something I now regret as you now given me the idea to see if it works for a little bit and put in the broken Volvo gearbox I have if it fits and put it on full speed and se what happens.

Washing machines always fail when they have a load in.

Well you're not going to run it without a load, are you?

Exactly.

Confucius also has a load of similar and unhelpful sayings.

Plus. I do run the Machine to clean on an empty 90degree cycle. Usually with my labcoat though.

It's alleged they live longer with Calgon.

(Whatever degree Clarke the supply is, I guess)

My current machine was brand new in 2003. It died after 12 months with limescale on the element. It was advised to use limescale additives. I did for a while and then bought some limescale balls from Lakeland. It’s now 22 years old and still ok.

'Fuck.'

It seems I'm not the first one to visit this sensor, the old one came out without a struggle but seemed to loosen off quickly - because there are no threads in the hole.

Inlet off, helicoil kit on order.

Well got the helicoil kit and coulding fit the drill bit in where I needed, luckily I had a shitty old drill bit similar in size so I used Mr angry grinder to make a short drill bit, the hole is now drilled, tapped and the insert is fitted, just the sensor to get in now.

I'm glad you think they work. Is this the same machine?

In between getting in from work at half 9 after a tedious & unnecessary meeting I had a shower, heard the oven element go pop when I put a steak pie in it, pulled said oven out, replaced the element with a spare, had another shower because ovens and the area behind them are absolutely manky and finally got dinner at  midnight.

Should probably have just ordered a takeaway.

My fair wife uses Calgon once a week, our washing machine is terrifyingly old and still working well. I thoroughly recommend it.

Yes. New in 2003. Hotpoint. I know they work now. Had one box of Calgon, snd then used these Lakeland things. So nearly twenty years on.

It's like saying you find something in the last place you look.

Well of course you bloody do.

If you've found it, you're not going to carry on looking, are you? 😆

Calgon is false economy IMO. Heater element is 30ish quid as absolute maximum. How many boxes of Calgon do you burn through trying to save a 30 quid part?

It depends how hard your water is. Can it smack you in the face?

but make sure you remove the counter-weights first, and hard wire the motor to the mains, (ideally though a Variac or other such motor speed control for speed control :) )

We have the softest water in the world (Aberdeenshire) so no need for Calgon etc. Last month we had 10kg of dishwasher salt delivered because my wife read 'it makes your dishwasher last longer'.

She really is pretty smart just occasionally has these episodes...

Our water is somewhere between Chris Eubank and Mike Tyson.  Hard as fuck.

I bung half a pack of soda crystals through my machine on a 90 degree wash twice a year. Usually with towels and rags in to not waste a good wash 😂

Hasn't stopped the bearings screaming though 🙄 Mine is a cheap hotpoint that is only just over a year old as it was replaced during the fire-gate warranty issues , the old one was fine but I didn't say no 😂

Even more technically it's not even mine it came with the house. So when the bearings eventually explode I'll call the magic number 👍🤷

I did once have to upend it and remove the sump, as a shark filter had clogged it. All seemed pretty clean inside of it. It's the bloody drawer going mouldly over time that does my head in no matter how ajar I leave it

It's always fun saying "yer tapwater's shiiite" to friends south of the border.

A friend of mine used to work in stock management at a local Tesco and once he got a delivery of descaler tablets. His reaction was along the lines of "who's going to buy these round here?!"

Soda crystals won't help the bearings but will work to clean between the drums.

Remove the drawer and chuck it in some bleach then give it a scrub.

The mould seems to be caused by washing powder residue, seen it on lots of machines.

I don't get that but do give the drawer and its home a clean once or twice a year, along with the filter which hardly ever has anything in it beyond small coins and a few screws.

I can't use normal laundry powder/pods because of the perfumes they add to them, just use soda crystals and white vinegar as a fabric conditioner.  I expect that the white vinegar will help to keep mould at bay too but never had a problem with it anyway.

This machine (cheap Bosch) is about fifteen years old and works like it did when it was new.  It did have a bit of an episode where it would always turn the extra rinses on, would pause itself and would run water into all three sections of the drawer.

Various attempts at fixing did nothing but then the dishwasher turned up it's heels so moved the washer into its place where it has worked perfectly since.  It can't have liked being all on it's own in the cloakroom.

I use liquid, bio only and no softener. Liquid goes in the drawer though. I'm also quite shit at cleaning the big seal too around the door 😂

Every few months I take the drawer out and soak it in a mild bleach solution whilst I'm at work for the day. Then wipe all the inside of the drawer bit out with the same bleach water and it does the job.

Its only properly screaming for the last bit of it's big final spin cycle. I've gone and knocked the speed down a level before when I've been on a call which quietens it down again. Otherwise I just shut the front room door 👌
