The grumpy thread

Dad's gone out.

He came in, asked when I was going out, said he was too. He never goes out any more.

I asked where he was going and he just dejectedly said he didn't know...

We are all taking the piss here and poor old Ghosty is watching his folks have a meltdown.

It can't be fixed, maybe, but try having a word with the old feller - looks like your mother has somebody to talk to (and it may only be that....) you have had a shout on here which isn't much help I know but it is better than nothing.   Maybe your Dad just wants to spell some fears out, get it off his chest.

I just busted a gut all year to spend a week with my old man because they emigrated 40 years ago.   Still didn't have a lot to talk about but we both got a great deal from the time together.   Have a word with him.....

Can't be any fun at all Max, hope whatever happens is calm & rational.

It's not easy, especially if you're not close to your Old Fella. I couldn't abide my old Man, and now he's gone (8 years) it's too late to do anything about it. He was an argumentative fart right the end as well.

Time for some bonding Ghostly One.

Yeah, no. No less confused now.

Yes, sympathies to Hooli and his pa.

And Colc, isn't a broken pelvis a pretty major affair? I had a suspect stress fracture on my pubic ramus and associated odaema in my pubic symphysis a couple of years ago and it was killer. I can't imagine what a full break is like.

And to Ghosty, unfortunately there is very little you can do I think, except be there for them.

I am in the Suzuki! So far the fuses are somewhere quite different to where the manual suggests and required some contortionism to get to. And the horn, which is prime suspect being a rusty mass, is located down under the back of the bumper so some mild dismantling is going to have to take place. In the street. In the cold. I am less excited about tinkering now.

Snapchat: clearly completely being the wrong target audience for this app, it’s just stupid and almost impossible to use or understand. I only got it so I can see the latest (I.e up to the minute) pictures of my grand daughter, but it’s just impossible to navigate for an idiot. DELETED.

I did work on the Jaguar, everything I  touched broke (fixed idle speed, clocks packed up, fixed clocks, the heater packed up, checked al the vacuum pipes and the one sticking out of the top of the dizzy cap broke off flush), gave up took the dogs out.

While out a discussion was had amongst a group of people I am friends with regarding PC ness and as we are all of an age, we decided we didn't like it. I do not wish to offend anyone but I now identify as a Black, transgender, homosexual who is bi-curious, a crippled vegan, agnostic. Not one of my group was in the least bit surprised at me finally coming out.

Trying to fit hallway and stair carpet from my house in the bungalow hallway. Is not going to plan. Fuck it.

Not sure if this is meant to be funny because it seems so unlikely, but I think we have examples of every one of those protected characteristics on this forum, and I' for one would like it to stay that way.  Comments such as the ones which were removed were offensive, precisely because it was derogatory to a group of people (women) on the basis of a protected characteristic (gender).  It's quite right that AS is not an employer or a public body, but as has been stated above, these things are generally qualities of a decent human being.

I don't think for a second they were meant to be discriminating against women - they were meant to be 'banter'.  But avoiding statements which continue to propagate discriminatory attitudes to anyone goes against The greatest and least heinous of all golden rules:

Be excellent to each other

I never even considered that the term "grumpy old man" seriously addressed a specific gender or type of person. IMO it's a mildly humorous expression denoting a "bah, humbug!" mindset.

Clearly I was wrong, but luckily for the wider society there are Concerned Citizens out there rigorously policing our social interactions to ensure that no potential sadness can occur.

So, I propose that we henceforth embrace the following changes:

Manometer > Personometer

Girling shocks > Youngpersoning shocks

Boyer Brandsen > Youngpersoner Brandsen

Maniac > Personiac

Malady > Maperson

Some personal and place names will have to change, too:

Amanda > Apersonda

Aladdin > Ayoungpersondin

Scunthorpe > Sgenericgenitaliahorpe

Penistone > Genericgenitaliatone

Clitheroe > Erectilestructureheroe

etc.

See that's another thing that gets me.  "Protected characteristics".  Why should it be a free-for-all to rip the piss out of certain groups but completely taboo to do the same to other groups, just because they have been decreed "special" by Those Who Tell Us How To Think?

(I'm not saying that it's a free-for-all on AS by the way, most of us are better than that - I'm talking about society at large.)

Same reason you aren't allowed to smack children.

Because the majority of people can't be trusted to make judgements of what is right / acceptable / not abusive.

So a blanket ban on certain jokes, actions, etc is safer.

Not saying that's my viewpoint, just how the world has become.

I blame the media for stating that things can be done about a persons  "issues "

so now that person expects things to be done about their  "issues " because someone keyboard basher has said it can be done ..

even if the experts say it would be bad or lethal  for them ..  or nothing can be done ..

then person takes out the option of travelling for far off parts and waving wads of dosh about to have "issues"  fixed ..

in a few decades the flying thing should come home to roost ... when long term effects kick in ...

Except you are.  You're just not allowed to whale the shit out of them with a belt any more.

Using a phone book doesn't leave marks, so I'm told.

I wonder if that's why the yellow pages is so small these days?

Not sure I get you.

If you can't be derogatory to a woman, you can't be derogatory to a man. If you can't be derogatory to a Sikh, you can't to an atheist. It's the /equality/ act, man, not the "list of people you can't pick on".

Edited to add "because they are a woman/man/Sikh/atheist" at the appropriate points.

So in what way was the thread title "grumpy old man" derogatory to anyone, except possibly men? Most of whom apparently don't give a fuck tbh.

It wasn't, it was the title of a TV show following people ranting, but it was removed because of hilariously point-missing snowflakeism, or some such
