I imagine I could be secure and wealthy if I chose to work at a publisher in London, but I cannot bring myself to do that. Cities need a very different approach to transport, and sadly I don't think cars should be a part of that.

This is where the lack of electric vans is an issue. Is there anything out there other than the Nissan e-NV200? That has a paltry 60-mile range in winter, so isn't exactly ideal. We're seeing second-hand electric cars getting cheaper, and more affordable, but the van side is badly lacking.

Ahh, never thought of that. The Nissan e-NV200, that's the solution and after the £8000 UK government grant applicable to all plug-in vans, it's only £16,562.20 on the road, pocket change that is.

 

These clowns increased pollution by bringing in 20mph speed limits and now they want money from the motorist in compensation. You couldn't make it up.

I would say just add it on to your day rates but seeing as most legit self employed people (from wherever they might come) are competing against people who don't pay tax or NI, insure their vehicles, pay the congestion charge or parking fines that doesn't really work does it....

I must admit, blanket 20mph speed limits do my nut in too but probably not for the same reason. Gateshead MBC decided it would be a good idea to do this, so now all the previously 30mph roads are 20. Not city centre congested urban roads, or even just ones near a primary school but the ones that connect villages together, or even the main drag through Birtley that was actually the A1 not that long ago. No purpose for it at all except that they can.

Condolences to family involved seth. As a parent myself it's a truly horrible thought that it can happen to anyone.

My grump for today is I need to work out what I'm doing. There is next to no man and van business going, every man and his dog seems to be doing it a lot cheaper than me and being able to do tip runs too. I don't do fly tipping nor can I afford the permit for the tip so tip run and garden clearance is a no go. The van costs me £85 a month just on tax and insurance which on limited hours it's just not earning enough at the moment. I've spent a lot on it and it's bloody reliable but I need to sit down and think if it's worth carrying on.

Went to pick up some replacement roof tiles and the MGF shat its front wheel bearing on the way home. Not just "a bit rumbly", but suddenly 30mm of slop and horrible grinding.

 

Fix one thing, two other things break. House...work...cars....its all just getting right on my tits at the moment.

Just met a fellow Bentley owner. Wedding car use, tatty paint (roof, bonnet, bootlid really bad, rust in the wings and arches) nasty cheap (van) tyres and he uses a local garage for repairs because they are cheap. But he has had the car re-mapped to 408 bhp and is really happy about his 6mpg. 'D' reg Cardinal red car.

 

Not sure how I feel to be honest. I suppose I expect every owner to be a fanatical bearded screw counter like me, but it quite upset me in a way I can't explain nor understand. The car was clean and shiny just a bit lacking and run on a sensible budget (rather than my stupid as fuck no budget attitude) and used as a tool. He makes £100 per hour wedding hire and said my car would get £200 - £225 per hour 'cos mine is nice...  but, I would rather set fire to my pubic hair than use the car for weddings!

 

I guess I need to grow up and accept other people use these old heaps as a tool not as a mobile Faberge egg!

Might be the time of year. Would it cost a lot to get a tip licence? Folk will soon start clearing sheds and gardens etc for summer and need stuff moved.

Sheefag are your vans more than 11 years old?   Khan is talking about non-Euro 4 vehicles which came in around 2006.  

 

That is not draconian or crippling business, that is sensible legislation to get the worst polluters off the road and start to reduce the NOx that is responsible for thousands of deaths a year.

Sheffield has a much more radical approach to city centre pollution. They are simply making it impossible to drive into the centre. That's why the town is bereft of decent shops or any life whatsoever apart from greggs, various pound shops and a "flagship" Primark store. Only things that can around are the trams which go from to nowhere to places no one wants to go and the busses which are busy moving fresh air from one side of the city to the other. Was in the centre for business the other day and it was like the aftermath of the TV drama Threads.

 

However, barely five minutes down the road is one of europes biggest shopping centres with a plentiful supply of free parking, easy traffic links and a complete lack of big issue sellers. Guess where every one goes...

Perhaps something to consider in the future? £400 a weekend isn't bad. I'm trying to get a 1950s traction avant and would think about wedding use to offset some bills but not as a regular thing.

I've done weddings in the 2cv but it's usually a fuel cost thing as the bride thinks £20 is fine. Well yes it keeps the vehicles in the public eye and it's reasonably fun, but keep us waiting for two hours for photos etc and my patience wears thin.

See also Newcastle. Bus lane cameras, instant fines, expensive parking. Same shops as the metrocentre, which is a short drive away and has 30,000 free parking spaces.

I reckon Meadowhell was the nail in Sheffield's coffin, but there was never was much parking in the city. It was all spread around the edge and walk in which is great, never understood why you'd want cars driving straight through a city centre. Nottingham is much nicer since the trams came in and they stopped cars coming in, and I thought Sheffield's trams were OK when I lived there.

The tram's alright, it can take you from Meadowhall to Sheffield Center, if you must go there. Apparently it comes all the way to Halfway which is only about a mile from my work. 

When I was at uni in Sheffield I used to drive to Meadowhall and get the tram in, it was way cheaper and easier than trying to park in the city, I think it was £3.20 for an all day raver on the tram back then. I'd also get a doner kebab from Shere Kahns for breakfast about twice a week if I had a late start and they were open. Good times!
