The grumpy thread

The excitement stirred up by the sugar syrup drink lorry when it came to town was obscene.

I was hoping for sink hole but it wasn't to be.

Skizzer, there's still a matter of a R16 vs Citroen CX face off to write about! With you off the scene, how can this fine road test ever happen?

Maybe it's just going through one of those phases. Suits some, I suppose. I'll shut up now as I'm boring myself.

What the fuck is it with people always moaning about the content or lack thereof quality* threads on here lately?

As we're all different* and like different stuff then what exactly is a quality thread?

What's the answer to it all, shut the door and don't let anyone new join?

Delete the shit threads?

Or just don't click on the stuff you don't like and make your own one up instead.

As has been said it's very hard to join in a build or collection thread without making the same comments again and again.

Yes some of the new threads are crap but at least we can all join in easily. What about people like me with no writing talent at all, a build thread from me would be shit, 2 hours of actual fixing and the rest of the day getting pissed off

^^^ to be fair that sounds like good reading, we all like to hear about a repair going pear shaped, it makes us feel we're not alone!!! So get on it shrimpy

Posted

I've nothing to fix anything as nothings really broken apart from some shit suzuki I have and I can't be arsed with the fucking thing

(watch me blow up on the motorway this week now)

I did find it a bit odd that suddenly it's 'gone shit'. Apparently, it was good enough for the overall standard of this place to be in the Grin thread only last week! I'm sure the overall vibe has more to do with the shitty weather after an unseasonably pleasant October. A bit of Group SAD. Which sounds like a T-shirt slogan.

And if CX vs 16 ever does happen, make sure you let me know. Sounds like a perfect video opportunity.

But returning to grumps, yeah, I pissed a few folk I know off last week by ranting about folk getting excited about the flashing, bright red, truck-sized face of hideous capitalism. Yes, I found myself agreeing with Keith Vaz on the issue. Incredible. (he said he'd rather it bypassed his town).

John Lewis can FRO too. I've not seen the advert. I'm just pissed off enough that I KNOW there is an advert. FFS. I'm hardly interested in the religious side of Christmas, but can't we just have fun with friends and family and stop relying on driving ourselves further and further into debt we don't need?

And Christmas songs can FRO too. All of them. Even Fairytale in New York. AGH!

I think that's it for me, Mr Shrimp. Afterall, you haven't got to read all the threads and as for: "all the good ones get bumped off the front page" well click on the little number 2 then instead of clicking on the thread you know you don't like. This time I haven't clicked the speeding/driving test type things at all. In the past I read them and joined in.

Yes people should take responsibility for posting on topic stuff, but we could all take responsibility for choosing to read, like, enjoy or not like, not enjoy and not read stuff.

It's not really that hard to scroll through the boards is it?

Then there are the options to subscribe to stuff you like or block people you don't.

In other words: its only the internet ;)

I'm with Andy FBP7 - more so, if anything.  I'm very tired of searching through lots of "let's start a thread for the sake of starting a thread" stuff in search of the few gems about keeping unloved old cars going. For this reason, I'm saying goodbye.

Princess Craig's suggestion separate section for Pistonheads stuff sounds good to me, although I'm not sure it's what the majority of people who are on here now would want.

If anyone is curious as to what becomes of my fleet, or is interested in occasional spots of pre-92 cars, I'll be on Flickr.  I'll probably drop by here from time to time.

It's been fun - see ya.

Don't go Skizz, how else am I going to be keeping up with the old Disco?

Ready to pounce when you've had enough and offer it up for a couple hundred quid ?

I'll break my usual habit of not posting in the grumpy thread to add to the voices, don't go, you've got enough going on with your fleet to fill the first page of the forum, keep us updated as its that sort of thing that keeps the place the way it was meant to be.  Personally I just ignore the threads that aren't of interest and I don't feel I'm missing anything, there's been some marvelous content on here lately and the community spirit has been in full flow with people helping each other out all over the place, it's rather wonderful to see to be honest.  Yes, some of it's a bit rubbish but once something has run its course and been abandoned it drops down the page and is soon forgotten.

Disco is with friendly* local garage. I think it's going to come back with a kerching sized bill. Gave him stuff that I could do but can't be arsed, and then he's come back with additional suck air thru teeth stuff on top.

Posted

I hope it's not me that's pissing Skizz off?  I love it on here but don't have the ability to work on stuff anymore so I'm reduced to chuckin my dream car at the garage. Believe me, I wish I was doing the work myself! The Honda goes to the dealers 'cos they are cheaper than doing it myself!

Maybe it's just the actual Bentley that is not in the spirit of Autoshite? Some one's got to like them and I drew the short straw!

That just sounds like an normal day in the garage to me! You should defo write about it.

I'm pretty certain it's not you who's pissed him off.

The whole Bentley things has been immense, you're living  a lot of people's dreams there, I reckon.

I suppose one of the problems about seeing complaints about AS 'not being what it was' is that it actually often causes more ill feeling as people air their views, I swear you can almost feel the tension at times. Maybe that's just me, but I honestly get a feeling of dread when those immortal words get uttered. I don't suppose this place will ever change too much and perhaps be that's not such a bad thing?

Autoshite is not what it was.  So what.  A lot of Autoshite still is what it was and some of it is actually more betterer.  If Skizzface needs to scoot for a bit then that's fine by me providing he comes back later, he's not allowed to abandon us like a sack of unwanted puppies.

If I cough in an envelope and post it to someone does that mean they take this chest infection away from me?  I've got plenty of envelopes, some stamps, a biro and quite a few coughs lined up.

I actually think that, overall, for the last couple of months Autoshite has generally been on a high - not least with the return of some familiar faces including D. Hirst and N. Spottedlaurel after long absences.  There might have been a slightly higher level of crap content in the last week or so, but hopefully that's only a blip.  Skizz, you might not see this, but I'll add my voice to those saying it'd be a shame if you left.  You have one of the best fleets of anyone here imho.

I concur - while empathising with the signal to noise ratio.

Don't leave us for good. Clear the air for a bit and give it a rest if it's annoying you. I did that for a bit, and came back.......slightly less irked.

I agree the thread quality's all over the place at the moment.

Things dip a bit when the weather is shite - I don't even want to drive a car, never mind work on it.

The essence of the site was slightly unusual, unpopular shite that is povo spec and various shades of prosthetic limb beige.

A lot of that type of stuff has gone, what's left is starting to get expensive - all"classic" prices are on the rise. Yes - a fair old bit of rammel that we would consider chod is becoming desirable due to rariity.

Rover r8's, vectra's, astra's are becoming the new shite. They are a fair bit more reliable than the old stuff, the downside is they need less maintainence and when they go Pete Tong spectacularly it's time for the bridge. Result? Not as many repair / maintainence type threads.

How many sites would have members who would lends cars, tools, money, moral support to people they have never met? Only this one.

That's EXACTLY why I like this site - 'cos it's not just about old cars. It's about people.

Yeah Billy, this is different in what way :)

Whatever it is I am NOT going to buy it.

What is it and how much?

Cor, is it just me or was Paul Young's 'girlfriend' in that video just totally gorgeous! Oh how I miss the 80's.

I think it's something to do with a certain cola brand and their bright red lorry driving through bits of the UK in the attempt to encapsulate a series of adverts they've been playing for 20+ years, where a lorry drives through towns in the US and makes everyone's Christmas brighter.

The seasonal part of AS is actually the best way round for me, as now the weather's nice and the days are long, I'm not holed up inside reading this as much and therefore not missing out on car show pics etc. In my winter though, they're prolific and I'm time rich.

I've no idea whether anyone reads my content but it doesn't take long to get buried beneath short burning popular generic/banal threads. Probably has a lot to do with the NZ timezone, which means I may be updating at 4am UK time, etc; not the most popular time to be reading, unless you're Junkman. No idea if I waffle on too much but I also get a bit bored of threads with loads of pictures but no context to them. I've since taken a Hirst-inspired approach to lumping all the non-fleet toss I've seen in one thread, so maybe if people wanted to start debate/listing type threads, they could do the same? When there's another subject they want to type about, just change the title. Think it'd work?

I, for one, hope Skizzer doesn't disappear. Who else will understand Swansea references?!

Back to grumps about old cars... Father J-Rod has somehow appropriated the Jewish Racing Beige Saxo. The Stagea is off/will be off the road for 6 weeks and I need the Saxo. Now, apparently, I can't go fetch it until he gets back from Spain because 'I'll need to add [myself] to the insurance'. Since when has that ever been a problem?!

Where else can you get a desirable* motor car for six or seven quid?
