The grumpy thread

I'm trying to buy an apple mac so I can learn how to do apps and stuff and not feel like my IT skills are fading (like my youth) quickly  out of relevance. By fuck they're expensive. I'm looking at 2nd had i5 processor imacs that are near on 700 quid!

I don't think there's much point in getting a lesser spec than that as if I'm using it for writing apps/making da millionz if it's slow I'll just get pissed of with it. The thing is the fuckers are welded shut too so all you can do is add more memory. If the screen fluffs then the whole thing is a 700 quid paper weight. Also the operating system is shite I can't stand it.

At the apple temple..I mean shop it's 1049 quid for a decent new one. 1049 quid. As comparison I bought a new i5 PC with 16gb of ram, 21 inch monitor and SSD disc for £450.

Work:

Pay - Okay

Distance - Perfect

Actual job roll, this goes from okay to slightly ridiculous, depending on a schedule that someone in an office makes up (and have no idea how long it takes to change over a machine, run it up and make all the running adjustments.)

So why 'Grump' ..... We get one complete weekend off a month, and night shifts are pushed onto us at times.

We get no sort of formal or full training, just dumped on a brand new piece of kit with " You're an Engineer, you shouldn't need training"

Every electrical job seems to be passed onto me, even though i'm not qualified in that area, yet because i graft and some how fix it / them, it's deemed okay.

Every time i / we ask for further training (Electrics, Fork-Lift licence, HNC in current Quals) , we just get fucked off.

When manager is off, everyone (even older Engineers) seem to come to me for answers and advice.

I think i'm slowly starting to dislike my job.

That is all.

Today I had a haircut,. Not usually enough to make me grumpy, but when the pretty young hairdresser asks if you'd like your eyebrows and ears trimmed, you know you're starting to get old :(

Do you know George Street?

Those bloody trams weren't 'arf coming close to my lorry.

Yep, I don't envy you. Were you delivering to the mini troubled supermarket opposite the Whateverspoons pub? There's a Wimpy there too ftw. Must pop in there for a Bender In A Bun With Cheese at some point. I bet they're excellent.

Insurance renewal, 28th jan isn't a great time and it will get nearer to Christmas every year as I lose a day per policy.

Not many insurers cover what I do so lots of phone calls trying to get a quote

In the interests of balance, here's a trivial ALLMODERNZRSH1T!! rant:

Last weekend, while parked up outside Sister's house, the malignant Fiesta decided to chop a coil out of its own front spring. Because said springs are about 5 inches narrower at the ends, I couldn't bodge it by re-seating the broken end for the drive home, so I duly visited ECP on Monday for a new pair. A family friend kindly lent me trolley jack & axle stands, sockets, spring compressors etc etc and I figured I'd have them swapped in a couple of hours. Oh, the hilarity.

After breaking the plastic scuttle cover to get at the strut top and spending half an hour wrestling with a seized ARB droplink bolt, I realised that not only were the top bearings and bushes on the shock utterly shagged, but the top nut was rust-welded on. I duly took the shock to the local back-street garage, where the mechanic eventually managed to get the nut off after quarter of an hour, with smoke billowing from his windy gun. Back at the car, I discovered that the bottom bolt on the other shock was similarly reluctant to come out. It took me around 20 seconds to round the head off with a 15mm hex socket - I then hammered a 9/16 spanner over it, and within another 20 seconds had rounded it off again (the cheap, chinese spanner was barely scratched). So that side can wait until the spring breaks.

This is a 9-year-old German-built car with less than 100k on the clock, FFS. And we're talking about 'consumable' parts which are expected to need replacing during the car's lifespan. I appreciate that the bean-counters are kings of the industry at present, but I've actually seen better quality fixings on 30-year-old Eastern Bloc chod.

Recently helped my new father in law to change a bust front spring on a Ford C-MAX

You actually have to take the windscreen wipers off to get the job done......ffs

Local paper has a twat in it moaning. Said twat has won the works raffle, top prize a scooter. Due to being a flid he can't ride a scooter so when he went to collect scooter from scooters R us said I'd rather have the cash. They offered him £800. Twat gets his mug in the paper that he's being mega conned 'cos it's worth £1500 innit.

FFS! £800 cash for doing nowt sounds oh so terrible. If it was my raffle I'd be saying pink 69? Nah, I meant red 11. You've won nowt Gordon.

Absolutely true ! Anyone who thinks that BL used shite fasteners should try working on a modern VAG !

Try the rear suspension bolts on a mk1 focus. Every single one , and there is loads , will be seized solid in the bush tube. Junk.

On the subject of front springs , loads of cars need the wipers and scuttle panel removing to do the front struts. In fact i did one on a 307 about 2 hours ago.

0454 sign on at work tomorrow. In Kilwinning. 3am rise, open the depot, get bus organised, leave at 4am to get to start point in time. Finish at 8.45 even further from the garage. Awesome.

The fuel sender on my SD1 is fooked after all.

I could make it work when not fitted to the tank, however once fitted it died. I opened up the box and discovered that the pivot is attached to a little arm which moves over a track of wires wrapped around a piece of plastic.

There was a groove worn in them and several strands had broken. At least I now know why it does'nt work.

The local cool kids thought the tarty girls they were with would be impressed if they lifted the drain covers off the street, turned them sideways, and dumped them in the drains. Twats.

Been out there tonight knackering up my back putting old paving slabs over the holes so some poor old dear / cyclist / owner of low profile tyres doesn't have a really bad start to their weekend.

Neighbours CCTV caught them nice and clearly so one copy of that recording shall be on their headmasters desk next week, and as I know who they are and where they live I am tempted to take a copy to their parents.....

Might even tell the council so they know where to send the bill for the replacements

Oh yeah. The parts are NLA from the manufacturer, the conversion kit is special order, costs a fortune and is a cunt to fit? Excellent.

Now been waiting on a relief driver at Ardrossan for an hour 'cos I had to steal his bus to finish the first part of my shift. He's bringing me a Sherpa down so I can drive an hour up the coast to the other depot to get their spare bus 'cos all of mine are fucked. Then tonight at midnight I need to drive an hour and a half up the coast from Ayr to the other depot to take their bus back, collect the Sherpa and then drive an hour back to my depot. All in storm force winds.

YEAH MATE HAVING A GREAT DAY TA

As the above story about fiesta springs. My ST it 9 year old and has had other front springs done too. They both just fired themselves out of the cups within about 6 months of each other ruining the tyres.

The replacements aren't genuine Ford and so far have been OK. Can't remember how long ago they broke

Locking wheelnut seized, resulting in knackered key, and visit to several places until one could undo it using large hammer and fancy gizmo.  Well done  fast fit Norwich.

Admitted  defeat with Mcgard original set as years of airgun abuse had rendered then knackered.

Ordered new set of *** locking wheelnuts, put the first one on and the security collar fell off...

Do this.  Otherwise we all end up paying.  And there are far more deserving beneficiaries of the Collective Principle...

Fuel filter on the disco rotted at the top and was pissing fuel out due to land rovers brilliant* positioning.

So as I was driving past wilko motorsave I called in and they had one on the shelf! Win!

Fast forwards to today, 3 weeks later. Hmmm, stinks of diesel. Soaking filter. Investigation reveals rubber washer on the drain is mega split & swollen. Cunning plan to use none diesel proof rubber :(

Fortunately I've been too bone idle to empty garage bin, so fixed at no cost.
