I'm dreading it. The heating in my new flat has the most complicated control units ever.

Trying to make the most of a damp bank holiday I decided to go hill walking each day. Yesterday was ok-leith hill and Friday street (famous place-it was in the bbc tripods series in the 1980's!). Today, despite heavy rain at 7am, I thought I'd still go out. Realised I'd left my waterproof gaiters behind before I got to the road, but thought I'd be ok. Had a nice drive down in the merc over newlands corner in thick fog and through Shere.

Missed the turning off the(very pretty) single track road to the correct hurt wood control carpark 4 and decided pitch hill car park was close enough and on the route anyway. No rain, but still foggy- visibility about 30 ft. Opened the boot and found i'd left my boots behind too. Did a few miles in my lightweight ones, but it started raining very heavily so I gave up after three instead of the planned nine miles.

Miserably typical weather for a bank holiday

Got clutch for engine

Attached gearbox, hoisted up engine and gearbox to put in car.

Engine crane collapses (ie the leveller hook snaps clean off), engine free falls from 3 foot in the air lands on crane leg, dents 5mm thick metal, detaching the wheel from the leg, then engine falls flat, cracking part of a mount on the inlet.

Thankfully gearbox and oil filter prevented yet another aluminium sump purchase. Ffs

Polish lorry drivers.

(Note: This is not a racist rant, this is not "coming over here driving all our trucks", this is not some EDLFUD - just an observation that every time it happens there's the same two letter country code on the reg plate)

Do they have vastly different rules on roundabouts to us? Do they even have roundabouts?

To get most places from my house I have to navigate one of the M1 junctions. Roundabout underneath motorway, standard fare. If I'm going straight under, it's two lanes in and two lanes out and they're marked as lane 1 - straight on or M1 North. Lane 2, straight on or M1 South.

So why is it always the Polish registered trucks that get into lane 1 and swing straight around in front of whatever's in lane 2 (which is either going straight on, or it's wanting to move over as the roundabout turns to continue round). Why do they not understand this? It's got to the point that I just don't get alongside them any more, but I've seen three near-misses this week alone.

This country is ahead of yours, it is already 9:30 am on the first day of spring.

So a lovely spring day ? NO. Cold, wet, windy and forecast to get colder, much wetter and very windy. Already reports of flooding and trees down.

Grump over.

Oh dear.  Is it pink and 'powered by fairydust'?

^ Brown and "powdered by oxidation" more like...

FWIW, my daughter's boyfriend made the same mistake of buying a Ka for silly money without asking or checking... it didn't last.

Thought I'd tax the ZX and use it again, DVLA on line and found direct debit so signed up,  then found they take the money on the 15th Sept so no tax till then can't use ZX but still have to pay for he full 6 months  so try to cancel Direct Debit by calling them and pay by card for instant tax.

The car will be taxed from the 1st, first installment is on the 15th then monthly on the 1st.

Discovered late last night that toxic cleaning chemicals make you sick as a dog and properly space you out.  I was so far out of it I forgot to walk the dogs - unheard of!

And eat...

Incorrect. While they don't take the Direct Debit payment for some weeks, you CAN drive the car. It's taxed from the moment you sign up. At least, that's what I think and what I'd claim if anyone stopped me.

I second andy. I've taxed all cars online since it went to skynet and they are taxed from the off.

Gnome taxed the crv online before we went to collect it and it was valid from that second, payment taken whenever it was later, then dd after that on the same day each month.

He printed the confirmation page and confirmation email out of course...

Bastards at parkingeye have sent a parking fine even though we left the car park before the ticket expired.

It seems they camera you in and out with reg number but when you put money and reg in machine it doesn't account for time finding parking space and ticket machine so they fine you for being in for 6 hours and 12 minutes even though you leave 2 minutes before your ticket expires, WTF I wouldn't mind but I always pay to park and am not trying to beat the system.

Tax is always backdated to the 1st of whatever month you are in

If you tax it on the 30th of August you will be charged from the 1st of August....

Yes it is but I bet if you drove it showing tax out half the month they would still have you even after taxing it that same evening.

I've done the same re: tax and never had an issue. I always print off the conformation and keep it with the car.

Both. I think the Ka lasted slightly longer....

If you left before your ticket expired tell them to GTF.

What is point micro USB? The mini USB isn't much bigger and is way more robust.

I just had another charging cable give up. I mean, I'm not skipping with them or anything, why the hell do they die so quickly?

Micro USB moved the bits that wear out into the cable end rather than the device end. The cable end doesn't last quite as long in a lot of cases, but it saves you having to buy a new phone etc.

Supposedly a Mini USB socket will last 5000 insertions whereas the socket end of a micro USB should last 10,000 if not abused too much.
