I worry that there's an over diagnosis of autistic children, and they'd be better off not being treated differently.

My friend has a mildly autistic son, and he and his wife have massive complex about it, I'm sure it's damaging the bairn.

I'm going to be controversial here, I suppose, but: I suspect the diagnosis is not causing the "damage", but the pressure of society to make the parents feel guilty about having a child with autism, and that by doing not a lot they are Bad Parents is causing the damage.  Their "massive complex" is actually the problem, not the child's autism - the missus is a teaching assistant for special needs kids, and she reckons these are the worst cases...

It's sad, really, because the kid probably only needs a bit explaining to them now and again about how "normal" people do stuff, and that this may be "weird", but they'll get by.

I can understand why people seem to care more for animals than other humans: Many folk DO care about

Human tragedy but voice more concern for the animals involved. Also to many a pet is that surrogate child or partner or fills the void of the long since flown the nest child. Ani mals bri ng enormous pleasure and comfort andrarely answer back.

Sadly I expect one reason that people dont donate to overseas aid for children etc is because theyve fallen for the gutter press stories and the charity begins at home crowd.

Could be because animals generally don't tend to act like a total c*nt towards you, like many people do? just a thought like.

I'm not great with human issues of this nature, no idea why really. Was scared that my daughter would have an affliction of some sort, which if she did I'm sure I would have accepted and got on with it. Having not really been around anyone my entire life who has issues I have no idea what its like though.

You should meet him. Even allowing for my natural bias, he is a bit brilliant  B)

And is this remarkable hypothesis based on empirical data and years of study, or complete ignorance?  Just asking, like.

I was told I had Aspergers by the Learning Support department at secondary school. I'm a bit strange, and quiet, but I'm pretty sure I'm not autistic.

Almost complete ignorance obviously, there are people much better placed to comment about it on this forum. I wasn't having a go at you or your son, just having an incoherent rant.

Don't tell them how Autoshiters do stuff.

Ah bloody hell - My bidding finger was warmed up and ready to click to buy another silly wee French car but I suddenly realised that I sent my passport away to be renewed last week and it hasnt come back yet. Thats fairly scuppered my plans.

I went to the dentist today and I need over two hundred quid's worth of fillings! Almost choked on my Haribo when they told me the price. That's the discounted price for being on their plan too.

Got some free toothpaste samples though so maybe this should be in the grin thread.

This is autoshite - surely you have some isopon in the shed?

Many times i have offered my condolences to somebody only to be told " i' m not arsed to be honest."

Maybe it's because a pet's love is unconditional?

Food for thought.

For pets passing away, my thoughts are that there is no chance to discuss. If your elderly relative dies there's likely to be a plan in action, hopefully it would have been talked about, still no less sad but more easily coped with.

For an animal, we just can't communicate this.

As for the autism etc, there is no right since it's a scale. My lad is autistic, but only very mildly so. All it takes is a bit of extra thought now and again as things are taken literally, jokey comments are taken to heart and he tends to get upset over silly things occasionally. My friends lad is also autistic but massively so - everything has to be done right, he goes to a special school who can cope with his behaviour and provide the right environment. He's a smashing lad but without allowances he'd be absolutely shocking.

People with issues, autistic or otherwise are always people and deserve time and respect.  Here's one who managed to write a book about his life and experiences, a few free e copies are available from the editor.

Based on some fairly up-close experience, I think he's got a point.

Although, admittedly, I don't have a child of my own diagnosed with it, so there are others closer to the issue than me who may take a different view.

Different opinions are allowed here...

yes 100%. this was me when I was a kid.

My daughter is autistic, my wife works as a therapist for children with speech difficulties and a family friend is the manageress at a special school. Autism comes in many forms, the spectrum is pretty wide.

Some kids do require regimented routine or else they would have a complete meltdown. Parkette fortunately is at the mild end but only because we were able to get the right therapy early. There isn't a cure obviously and whilst some children can be taught about appropriate behaviours in certain situations, others can't.

It's a mysterious condition, fascinating and terrifying in equal measure. Having been through the mill of it myself have nothing but respect for parents who have to live with it. It does redefine you as suddenly you can't go out as easily as other families, can't necessarily have holidays. Shopping trip? Cinema? Often impossible.

You soon discover who your friends are as well. Many other parents completely cut us out of their lives when they knew Parkette had issues. Why would they let their gorgeous perfect children mix with someone defective (actual words used by a mate who was lucky not to end up in hospital afterwards). It's not easy, often made worse by the fact that because there is no physical indication, a child melting down in Tescos is obviously because you are a bad parent.

It seems to be more prevalent. Perhaps diagnosis is better. Maybe the MMR is involved? Parkette was developing normally before that was administered. Despite the Government discrediting Andrew Wakefield I still can't help but feel there is something in it. After all if it was proven that the risks of vaccination outweighed the benefits and the programme was stopped we would be back to victorian levels of infant mortality.

Until then I can't continue looking for a cause. Nobody knows, perhaps genetic, perhaps external pollution, perhaps fate. It is what it is and I wouldnt change anything now.

Defective? FFS, there would only have been one defective person after that comment and it would have involved a less-than-straight nose.

I'd rather a "defective" good-natured kind child than one bought up to look down their nose at others.

Posted

My daughter suffers from it and it's been an absolute nightmare.

My good friend has 2 sons, both suffer with Asperger's. Up to around 18 months old you would have been hard pushed to identify an issue then it all seemed to change. She has gone through the mill but things are a lot more settled now (mostly). The MMR issue is now totally discredited but I acknowledge the lingering doubts. I'm no expert whatsoever.

When was aspergers/autism/adhd invented?

Both me (35) and my brother (32) were diagnosed at school as 'not quite right but nothing wrong', ar Mat was diagnosed as hyperactive due mainly to E102 and the Exxx in cherryade and is dyslexic.

I had 'coordination problems' (I was clumsy and 'aloof' and my handwriting is [still] apalling) and was comfirmed as mildly dyslexic at uni.

I have an above average IQ and my brother is significantly above average.

When we were at school, autism/aspergers/adhd hadn't been invented, but we have both since been told we are on the autistic spectrum.

Posted

You could argue everyone is somewhere on the spectrum. It can either be no problem at all, as with the majority of the population (everyone has quirks and oddities) or it can be more serious and need attention or allowances.

I do believe it's brought on by something modern, whether it's jabs or colourings or whatever. It just didn't seem to exist years ago. It's also not helped by some parents using all these disorders as an excuse for their little shits, it detracts from the needs of those genuinely suffering.

I just spent 20 mins typing out a post about how a injector socket I bought did FA in regards to removing an injector on the XM, and how I ended up twatting myself over the head with a scaffold tube resulting in lots of blood all over the place but I managed to press the fucking back button and lost it all. Arrgh!!!!

So.

Changed needle and seat valves in float chambers to fight excessive OMGMPG of Rover of d00m.

Managed to put everything back together without some bolts and washers left over.

Had to take grille out to retrieve dropped 1/2 inch spanner, too.

Result:

Runs really well, until I switch it off. When restarting from hot, it first runs ok, then, after maybe 100 yards, only on one carb, then dies in the middle of the road.

Waited a few seconds, restarted, and it ran like a dream.

This happened three times now.

Shit.

Junkman

Send it to the crusher and watch it grow back into a p6 again. It may come back as a better one. Worked for Christine.

I pissed about for ages trying to get an injector out my smart diesel so ordered a puller from ebay for 40 quid. In the mean time I'd hosed loads of penetrating fluid down next to the injectors and let it stew for a couple of dayt and they just popped out while I was connecting up the puller. 40 well spent but still better than hitting myself over the head with a pole.

Sounds like it is running mega rich. Try leaning off the mixture a tad and see what happens

It would appear that the dizzy on my SD1 is worn hence the timing scatter.

No doubt the wear is in the shaft - a recon one from rimmers is around £250.

A secondhand item would more than likely have issues as well.

While checking the timing the fuel gauge packed in - the needle just went to its resting position.

More investigation then.
