The grumpy thread

A week ago I wrote an email to a specialist in  Austin Westminster parts. The guy took over a company I had previously used and I had great friendly and quick responses from them.  I expect the new owner will blame Covid for not responding to a simple question  on if the can supply the parts and the cost.

I bought some new wheels for the mx5 recently, two centre caps were missing - I had a look on eBay and 52mm centre caps are a rare thing, £22 each from Mazda :( the more common size of 57mm are ten a penny but 52mm are hens teeth

imagine how pleased I was to find a set of four for only £16. I didn't particularly want black but I placed an order and felt suitably smug.

And my insurance disc and cert for a policy that started on the 28th hasn't arrived at the broker yet.  Apparently all the data processing for Aviva is done in India and is affected by the pandemic. Hope any Gardaí I meet will be understanding as it's a €60 on the spot fine if your disc isn't on display.

The wonders of outsourcing.

I fell into a trap today from the Mrs. She has OCD, more specifically "poo fear".

We go to the park & have a nice cup of tea. I put used tea bags in a plastic bag & dump in rear footwell. "Isn't there a bin?" she says.

Oh look, it's Admiral Ackbar!

Yes dear, it's on the walk. I pick up the bag and we walk. Bin has a lid. I'm not stupid, I've been here before and lift the lid using the bag, and then drop bag in. OCD says no, as she then keeps 2m away from me. Not for covid, I am CONTAMINATED.

Ok, explain?
People go to park with dogs.
Dogs shit.
Shit goes in bags.
Bags go in bin.
Bin is covered in shit.
I touched the bin, even though I didn't.
I'm covered in shit.

I think I need to get her a job with the homeopathy marketing board.

Does she shit in a lavvy, wipe her bum with loo-roll, then flush it like the rest of us? She's coated in a sparse layer of poo particles courtesy of lavvies being good aerosol distributors of whatever you put down the pan. Probably not a great idea to tell her that though.

Bit of shite never hurt anyone, it's good for the immune system. Probably...

eBay grump. They've started paying funds from sold items straight into your bank without using Paypal which sounds like a good idea, but it takes 2/3 days whereas PP was almost instant, and I can't help the feeling that getting nearly nine quid sliced off a sale plus postage figure of £56 is a bit more than it used to be.

Just spilled some milk on the fairly deep-pile carpet in my bedroom 😡

Soaked some of it up with a couple of cloths, then used some Dr Bergmann carpet cleaner (the bottle with a brush attachment mounted on top) which proved to be shite.   I reckon I'm gonna have to replace the fucking carpet.

I feel your pain.

The mistake you made... not saying "I'll use my own bin."

You'll learn.

Note: lots of my family and extended family are similarly afflicted and it's painful. Mentally.

If an email gets no response within 2 days, I phone. It's now so far down the list as to be lost.

Deskphone in the office hasn't been working properly for a while - taking over a minute to get a connection after I've inputted the number via the PC.

So yesterday first thing I get a call from matey in IT who asks me to swap the phone for another one, email him the serial number and IP address, and everything will be lovely.

It wasn't.

It's working less than before, iT have been informed and apparently it needs a reset or something, so it's a second day of doing fuck all.

So why the grump?

Man flu.

I'd much rather be at home doing fuck all wrapped up in a duvet eating soup than sitting in a cold office which stinks of shite (on a sewerage farm) waiting for someone to do their job.

Send pies.

It's in a box.  My last one came with just a sticker on the Bosch box. Very efficient.

The 'rules' also appear to change randomly and in a not logical way. I'm also conflicted as to how much I should go with it to reduce her anxiety V I'm reinforcing the OCD and making it worse.

how you getthrough to a real human on a Nat West phone line - seriously tiresome if you aren't on digital banking.

"It is a bit of a challenge  but basically you have just got to hang on the phone when it is asking for digital ID. After about 3 goes of you saying nothing it gives up and puts you through to person".

No listen to a long message and select a number

Fortunately a Trustee of the Charity I Clerk for managed to do the above and get through when I had given up in frustration, all this just to order a new cheque book.  We are still in the era of pen, paper and two physical signatures which fits with out 1717 Almshouse.

Insurance renewal for the Focus came through a couple of weeks ago, I totally forgot to act on it and try to cut a bit extra off.
Price was due to come down anyway, good stuff.

Rang the insurers just now to renew, and make a couple of changes to the policy (new job, also now 2 cars at address), "Well sir, those factors are rateable changes so that will increase your premium."

Bollocks.

That puts me straight back to what I paid last year, I thought insurance was meant to get cheaper as you get older... Ffs.

Now I seem to be living in an expensive area for insurance (great 🙄) and have an expensive job for insurance (really great 🙄🙄). Insurance is a total fucking scam at the best of times, my car is valued at £245 yet they want to charge me over £700 if I stack it? No, get bent. I barely use the sodding thing except scooting to work and back. FML.

Have you looked to see if others are cheaper via online sites? You might still be in cooling-off window with current renewal, depends on timings. Not sure you're quite old enuff for age-related decreases as yet.

Yeah, couldn't get any cheaper elsewhere. Direct Line have always been cheapest for me as my whole family have all house+car insurance with them so we haggle them down a lot. My insurance has come down a few hundred quid every year so far, £1550 the first year (ouch), £1050 the second year (still ouch), £750 the third year, and pretty much the same again this year.

Toyota Aygos are fun, and group 1 insurance (iirc). Might get one purely to spite insurance companies. 😤

Its times like these where I'm slightly dreading the Micra's renewal in October. I was looking at a 5-door Aygo as a second car a few months ago, and inurance still was way too near to £2000 than I'd have liked. With all costs accounted for owning an Aygo was ~£50 cheaper than a classic... either way, I was going to get stung big time by the insurers.

As a winter car, though, I'd quite like an Aygo...
