The campaigners have a point, it's an easily observable fact that we do tend to gloss over the achievements of non-white people, and of women.  I've already heard more than enough homophobic nonsense targetted at Alan Turing's nomination and people saying stupid things like they won't use the money he's on so.... yeah.  It's a nuanced issue.  Best option is to put nobody's face on the money, not even the one with the sparkly hat.

As a gay man, that's a bit of a shame to hear. Then again, many will say stuff on the Internet they'd never dream of saying face-to-face. I couldn't give a toss who's on my money because it's currency I'm going to pay people with or cash into the bank. Also, it's a £50.00 note, a bit of a rarity in my hemisphere.

Quite a few people saying stuff in the last couple of pages that could be described this way...

Depends on who's reading it I say. If I took half the stuff I've seen on the Internet to heart, I would have gone mad. I try and make a small difference by writing stuff I'd say and stand by if I were to say it in public, so as to make sure I'm not contributing to a bubble of fist-throwing that every open forum and social media platform has.

I was hoping to bid on a car at SWVA today but didn’t ‘t realise you had to register well in advance and thought I could do it at 7am this morning, I was wrong, phoned them and they will not allow me to bid. I keep telling myself I have too many cars, I hope it sells above my limit.

CarParts4Less - set of brake pad ordered, three of one type and one of another sent. Returned and refunded, reordered. Waited two weeks, after numerous phone calls  - received today - three of one type and one of another, have to return again.  Don't dare sounding even slightly exasperated on the phone over an order which has taken a month and is still not fulfilled - you will be accused of raising your voice. The end of my brief association with this company.

They're another name for Euro, aren't they. Was it the same set of pads?

Whatever you do, do not go back to see what it sold for. It'll probably be on Ebay next week for more anyway

I did, and it was well within my budget 🙁

I would have thought that it would be in their interests for it to be easy to register as a bidder.

a grump from yesterday - I've been looking for a Honda CR-V as a daily driver for a while and spotted one locally that might fit the bill. I think I must have broken the world record for the shortest car viewing when I turned up yesterday, looked under the front, saw the lashed up mess of exhaust where there should be a catalyst

I asked two questions :

how long have you had the car ? "four or five months"

what happened with the exhaust ? "was like that when I bought it"

the car has a two month old clean mot pass -  I made my excuses and left :( dodgy bastard must have cut it off and sold it.

some other poor bugger will get a shock when it needs an mot next year.

well this is a shitter......

seems that we are going to loose one of the garages, meaning that one of the little cars will soon be homeless.

so, sunday we gotta get the mini 1000 going cos we need that one out of the garage, so we can put the orange mini in there in its place.

we got to then get the mini 1000 over to kerrys and its supposedly temporary home on their drive.

which will pretty much fuck it up, if the car spends any time sat there, cos, well its a mini and they do rust just for fun.

needless to say i can see that we will end up putting it on the tow rope and pulling it over there as the chances of us getting it going are not good, not good at all.

still, one thing, it has crystallised my plans for the car, which are too get it up for sale and get it moved on.

in fact if push comes to shove it will go to mathewsons, yes i know it'll not go for that many pounds and pennies there cos its just a 1000, but atleast then it wioll be someone elses problem child!

Who knew? GM gave itself a stupid new logo earlier this year.

There seems to quite a spate of new car company logos lately.  VW and BMW have gone for "flat" logos which seem to be the current trend.  Peugeot have changed to a logo similar to the one they used in the 1960s.

What makes you believe Diane Abbott is a transgender black woman?  I'm sure there's a joke there that I'm just not getting right now.

As for Alan Turing, you could always get yourself up to speed with his Wikipedia article to find out the one or two things he did: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing Mr Turing was subjected to what is effectively chemical castration because of his sexuality so putting his face on some money is small recompense for what our own society and government did to him after all he did for them.

As a Computer Science graduate I was already familiar with Turing’s work but had absolutely no idea about what had gone on in his personal life. Blimey.

yes its looking that way, with 3 cars and only 2 garages something has to give, and keeping that car out on the drive for any length of time will ruin it.

best then to let it go to someone else to enjoy not to mention the money its sale would generate!

I only knew because I was given tickets to an amateur dramatics play which was about his life. And afterwards goggled him.

As you will now no doubt know you have to stick a deposit down to get a bidder's paddle (or whatever the internet version is called.) It was £1k for SWVA last year I think. I also was after something at a Barons auction in 2020 and it was the same for them. The deposit reappears in your account a few days later should you fail to win anything.

Yes I  was aware of the deposit and have done so in the past with SWVA, what I failed to notice was how far in advance you had to pay. I do not understand why I could not give them debit card details before the auction started.

I suspect it is because people like you and me do leave it to the last minute. I worked very briefly for Brooks (which became part of Bonhams) after graduating. Hardest work I ever did and the hours just before and during the sale where up there with a City bank. Shame the pay wasn't. Basically there are not enough time/staff to process last minute bidders.

Thanks Morrison's.  Cancelling our grocery order an hour and a half after you were meant to deliver it without so much as an apology.

This was already covering for a Tesco order that failed to materialize last week.

So now we have to go to a supermarket.  Which is bad enough on a Saturday at the best of times.

Let's see if the mask adherence ratio has improved from ~75% and social distancing at about 5% when I was last in there a few weeks ago.  Not holding my breath.  Though I wish I could hold my breath for about an hour, would make this feel somewhat less unsafe.

I think a fairly sharply-worded letter to the CEO is in order here.

I dunno what your experience has been, but there seems to have been a rapid growth in recent times of people just reneging on agreements at will and generally taking the piss.
