can you cycle to work?

No sadly. Im in domiciliary care and do around 60 mile a day on average with tight schedules.

Speaking of cycling to work I just have, I'm at the train station now (when you cycle for a living adding 20 miles on to your day isn't great).

On the way from my house to the train station I have to pass through a few streets of 19th century terraces. One of these streets has a crossroads, and one house back from the crossroads on the left is an off licence.

I'm coming down the hill to the crossroads and some dumb bint in an Aygo comes in from my left and turns right down the road in front of me. Clearly wanted to use the offy as she decided to drive down the wrong side of the (very wide) road and is directly in front of me. I gesture 'get back/move across' at her and give her a disapproving glare and as I'm passing her driver's window she just looks at me dumbfounded.

Fuckwit, if it wasn't for a few seconds I'd be on your windscreen.

the golf gte advert was just on and shows some gimp "being naughty" by pressing a "gte" button then he spanks it all the way round to 3000 rpm

oh the shame of it nuns and kittens will die

Dunno, is there any benefit to thrashing an electric motor since they develop loadsa low down torque? No longer have to take it to 6000rpm to keep it in the power band, the motor will help out.

My diagnosis earlier today has made me realise how ill I have been and how I always put myself last. It will change. I will start having things for me.

Anyone who does'nt like it,well, they can go and smell their mam's.

Had a funny old Sunday......sort of grumpy sort of grin really

Took the dog out early as usual but the park was still locked....supposed to open at 7 and this was about 7.45. Walked around to another gate......also locked. Another regular walker drove around all the gates and all locked. Bit of a bugger as only park in area that is fenced in so dogs can't do a runner.

Walked home and decided to go back with bolt croppers in the truck.

Snipped lock off just as a bloke walked up behind me.

What you do that for he said.

Because locked (about 8.30 by now) I reply

I'm a police officer and I'm going to report you says the bloke

OK says me........no point in trying to do a runner in the truck and I've got a bright yellow shirt on (so prob fashion crime as well)

Arrive back at truck about 40 mins later..........

nicked 2.jpg

You're nicked slag.jpg

Amazing police response time!

Never let it be said they don't bother......when the chips are down they are on the ball!

Mind you they couldn't find me.........I was in the fenced off dog area.....and no doubt they were told I had a dog.

So tomorrow morning I've got to go in and help with their enquiries.

And yes I do know I am idiot btw

What a really stupid , arrogant and impatient thing to do ! What if the park was locked up because it had been sprayed in something harmful to animals / humans . Also the police have to attend a call like that so we're wasting time with you when I'm sure they had more important things to do .

Harrumph. Kids these days have no respect for their railway stations.

Don't forget the "weld the corners, then smash the fuck out of the rest of the plate with a hammer so it fits at all" and the "push the plate against the bottom of the car with the handle off the hammer and tack it quick before it all sproings off"

Buying a spot/ plug welding nozzle for the torch means you can push the plate down with the torch rather than having the hammer handle skate off at just the wrong moment.

They reckon they will most likely 'deal' with me by a 302 or something where I have to apologise and buy a new lock or something. I'm not going to volunteer for a load of shit but that seems fair enough.

I did have some fun with the on site q&a..........he asked me if I knew who the land belonged to and I said I part owned it (because council) and he took me seriously!

Say nothing, confirm nothing, admit nothing, it is their job to prove anything, anything you say will be turned against you.

Your friends dog having escaped into the park and you being unable to gain access (when the park should have been open) to retrevier it might be mitigation.

Or they might do you for going equipped to steal having the bolt croppers with you.

Another one banging the drum for cycling, it's incredibly therapeutic (spelling?) and can take you to places your car won't. It also makes you realise you've been out for ages and haven't realised how far you've been or even what you've been thinking of.

Admittedly if I was working 14 hour days I'm not sure how I'd fit any in mind you.

Couldn't face riding today ( damp drizzle, misty and cold at 7am - in August!) and now have a cold apparently. Didn't have one yesterday and spoke to no one all day so no idea where it came from.

That's how cycling to work helps if you can manage it - half an hour each way for 9 miles is a decent work out for me. Some days in work I do 12 hours, but usually manage to keep to 10.

Ruined Sunday - lost 3hrs I should've been in the garage as the only white van man in Belgium to work Sundays was on the phone in front of me........ Sat at the lights round the corner from me...... all green - not a sausage of momentum..... They aren't the longest switch so we missed that one. I growl but sit and wait for next time...... again, not a sniff of progression. I hit the horn (very briefly I may add), still nothing.

I jumped out to see if he had an actual problem, thoughts of heart attacks or siezures running through my head.... nope - on the FUCKING PHONE!!! TWATWAD

Stuck to English (French the default around here) and in no uncertain terms told him to hang up and move his fat ignorant arse..... which he did after a lot of grumbling.

Gesticulating all the way down the hill, he then goes straight through the red (trying to make up the lost 5mins at 'my' lights I suppose) and promptly t-bones the local bus........... the 12 sandwich eating fat useless excuse for a lard arse was, of course, on the phone again! I politely told the person on the other end I was holding the phone until the police arrived as his friend was now responsible for serious damage and lot of injuries..........

Hours with plod - statements done and awaiting call if needed as a witness in the future........ now have to improve my French to include legalise terms - deep joy

I used to live in Belgium, I was partly brought up there and spent a few years in Brussels. I miss being there and it still feels like home when I do eventually go back.

Where did this happen then? I'm assuming Brussels somewhere as the driving there is fucking atrocious. I remember years ago seeing a woman in her car at the traffic lights refusing to move because she was engrossed in reading a book.

Yep, I know all about legal paper work in Belguim, they want to know your life story thrice over before they'll even look at you.

a grump from yesterday, and our visit to the south lakes motor museum.

no, not the chance that i may, or may not have been caught speeding, cos, that will have been down to my own stupidity and not really paying attention to where i was.

it is that the stunning mark 1 allegro and the beige metro on display both appeared to have suspension issues.

the allegro was listing on its drivers side while even sat on a low axle stand thing, as if the hydrosag suspension was living up to its name, and had lost pressure, while the metro looked like it was sat level, though it too was on an axle stand thing too on its driver side.

and that just made me sad....

I do get a couple of hours or so in total scattered through the day. Not enough time to do much though.

When are you off mate? Pop down, have a Triumph fettle, sniff a Volvo, eat bacon and sausage butties and continue talking shite.

You've put a barrier up before you've started, chief*. Use just half of one of those hours to get out on the bike, you'll be amazed how far you can get once you've done it a handful of times. Some of my mates say they'll never manage a 6 mile bike ride, yet have done twice that without even realising. The further from a main road (or any road) the better, canal and river paths are best imho.

* I appreciate it's not a matter of someone just magically saying 'get over it' and your blues are gone, by the way.

I understand cav,but im just too tired to do anything. I get up at 5,go bed at midnight gone most nights after ive eaten. When ive got a break i just tend to set phone alarm and crash out. I agree with bike rides though, due to my delicate* physique i dont like hills. In Derbyshire they are had to avoid but we have lots of tow paths. Easy to cover 20 miles on them. At the minute though ive not got a towbar so cant use the bike rack .

If you're working seven days a week (be surprised if you are) then something is wrong. If you don't make time (without excuses) then you are sort of denying yourself the chance of doing stuff.

Millennials..

Why the swipe at an entire generation?

Did alcyone say he was dealing with a millennial?

There are plenty of self-entitled people in their 40s, 50s, 60s...

Lord Sterling - I'm now in Watermael-Boitsfort..... right on the forest......

Obviously - anyone who hits Brussels for anything or needs Belgian checks, collects or forwarding/overnight stops - doors are (almost) always open. Not working away so much now, happy to put up shiters on route wherever.

Bulgo trip is interesting...... Lada or ZAV on my list so may be joining in on that one.

My French is pretty good, NL/Vlaams is fairly good and pretty much fluent German if any translations are required - happy to help if I can.

Walking may be better than cycling. If you have a media player of some sort download an audiobook, stick your earbuds in and go out for a short walk when you have 30m spare. Don't sit and stew in your own thoughts.

I'm a big fan of walking in the working day. Colleagues used to get cigarette breaks where I last worked, so I reasoned I could go out and have a swift 10-minute walk instead, making it a rather longer one at lunchtime.
