bunglebus Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Oh I've got weird shit going on now. Trying to post a load of pics, I get gateway timeout errors or a duplicate post with just one pic attached...

SiC Posted July 10 Posted July 10 How things in the last 15-25mins? I've thrown the book at it with caching (only a 20% hit rate at the moment), bot fighting, blocking AI scraping bots, accesses from China+Russia needing Captcha to get in and rate limiting requests. Right now the load averages have dropped right, right back to something sensible. With Cloudflare enabled, I really need to know if people are experiencing weirdness. There may have been about an hour ago when I first switched on, but hopefully nothing at the moment. Dyslexic Viking and IronStar 2
JJ0063 Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Had some access denied something or other white screen errors 10 mins or so ago but seeming better now. thanks for your hard work as always 🙏 SiC 1
SmokinWaffle Posted July 10 Posted July 10 I keep getting rate limited for doing not very much - just clicking around on my phone. SiC 1

High Jetter Posted July 11 Posted July 11 Looked at a few pages at 7:30 this morning, all was fine then a few muntes later it slowed right down, and I got the cloudfare timeout too. Doesn't seem too bad right now though.
Saabnut Posted July 11 Posted July 11 |Last night (around 0100) I gave up it was so slow. This morning it seems fine.
SiC Posted July 11 Posted July 11 Late last night I switch back down to the lower plan in the real hope that with Cloudflare taking the load off, the server wouldn't need so many resources. Unfortunately it appears that's not the case. Better than it was but it's right on the edge with almost no margin for peaky times So this morning I switched back to the higher, more expensive plan. Longer term I definitely want to migrate to a cheaper host. The current provider with the resources they allocate is really expensive. While we're covering these costs in fund raisers, I treat the costs as if I was spending my own money. If there are options to reduce spend and waste, I feel like they should be explored. Some of these are stuff like finding a cheaper host but also trimming the fat to make everything leaner. The extra bonus of reducing the costs means less fund raisers needed from everyone and extended the runway that we get from the pot. Hence the multiple efforts in figuring out a way to make things cheaper but without noticeably impacting usability and stability. Since switching over to the upper plan, I've keeping a window open to occasionally glance over to get rough load usage, it seems everything is quite happy right now and hopefully no one is experiencing slow downs. Let me know if there are anymore slow downs and I'll monitor things more closely. I'm hoping that Cloudflare caching will soften the peaks at busy times. wuvvum, Snake Charmer, Sunny Jim and 9 others 7 5
Zelandeth Posted July 12 Posted July 12 Random question of the day, and probably me being a bit thick. Is there a way in here to see if a PM you've sent has been read? I'm used to PhpBB where it remains in your outbox until the recipient opens it...but there doesn't seem to be an outbox on here unless I'm just being exceptionally blind.
loserone Posted July 12 Posted July 12 If you look at the message it says when all parties last read it or if they have not read it yet.
SiC Posted August 7 Posted August 7 As an admin user, I get these prompts. This means it's time for another software update. In the list of fixes, these are right at the top: - Improved the efficiency of unread content streams when using MySQL 8. - Improved performance when replying to a content item or create a content item. Both of which is what has been causing me so many headaches. Hopefully those fixes will improve performance further. Admittedly it seems pretty quick on the current (expensive) setup so the change probably won't be that different. Anyway updates are updates and they need applying. I'm thinking of doing it just before lunchtime today. Should be quick as it'll be a quick backup run, apply software updates and hit go. I'll start about 11:45 to 12:00 and expect to finish around 15 mins later. If you don't see the top banner (and haven't cancelled it), the update is done. egg Posted August 9 Posted August 9 Site has been slow for making a post on long threads in last 3-4 hours. Dyslexic Viking, RayMK and Datsuncog 3
High Jetter Posted August 9 Posted August 9 Yup, it's sticking on 'saving' for an unusually long time.
320touring Posted August 9 Posted August 9 When I click "unread content" it brings no results. Sham and High Jetter 2
Dyslexic Viking Posted August 9 Posted August 9 Content I started is empty so the search function also has problems again?
SiC Posted August 9 Posted August 9 Sorry I've been busy/out most of this afternoon and missed this until now. Search server inexplicably gobbled all it's storage again. It's on a separate volume so it doesn't at least completely take down everything else and stuff just limps along instead. Hopefully the caching in Cloudflare probably makes the slowness less apparent until something is posted and pages updated. Hasn't done it for a while. I did disable the daily overnight restart as it was seemingly behaving itself when last updated and it is a horrible bodge to do it. But I've enabled that auto-restart again as at least it was pretty solid. Perhaps it might have done it after the forum software update too. Maybe I should have kicked a re-index off after that update. I've flushed it's indexes and kicked off a re-index about an hour ago. Will probably another hour before it's fully indexed again and search going back to begin of time again. But hopefully everything has gone back to normalish speed in the last hour since I reset all that. LightBulbFun, IronStar, Dyslexic Viking and 4 others 4 3
High Jetter Posted August 9 Posted August 9 Unread is working again so I think you've adjusted the points gap. Thanks Si
SiC Posted August 11 Posted August 11 I don't have any errors in the logs from your account. Where were you and what was you doing on the site? I.e. for me to try repeating it.
MorrisItalSLX Posted August 12 Posted August 12 The site had a bit of an upset for about 5 minutes a moment ago.
