Correctly engined Transit

Picture 2 of 14

1989 Ford Transit Luton box van | eBay

'The speedo over-reads by about 20%. ie. if your doing 50, it will read 60'

'Its not the fasted van in the world but will do 70mph'

Is that 70=60 or 80-70, M8?

I'd be very surprised if an early DI with a Luton box would manage a genuine 70.

How's the MoT history?

Haven't checked but all the other boxes are ticked. She's a beauty.

And also having noticed no jumber plates on view I can’t do some background checks. I bet this has been put it through at whatever cost.

Don't know if I'm the right person to ask  as I am totally biased! But yes it looks worth a look though I would hope they'd be open to negotiation at that price.

It's the best engine. Not the smoothest or quietest but they do sound happy being thrashed a bit.

Pre facelifts look much nicer, I think anyway, but that's a wierd hole in the front bumper. Another negotiating point I'd say.

And it looks nice and shiny but check it very carefully for laquer peel. Once it starts it never stops. When I bought mine (same colour) there was one small patch in front of the sunroof, by the time I got rid the whole car was riddled with it, though admittedly that was nine years later. The fact it has got this far without it starting means it might be a good one.

Check rear arches for rust obviously but if they are OK then I expect the rest of the car will be.

But yeah obviously I'd say it was a perfect first car. Also good for teaching someone how a car works though I'm certain it would be reliable.

Watching with interest.

@Cluffy was about a millisecond away from pulling the trigger on one of these.

Second chance m9, as this is in our home town for £1750

These are just brilliant little things. That fella never did get back to me, even though I offered asking price if he stuck a fresh ticket on. Must’ve been a lemon....

Our old ones did, well some of them. I think the one I usually piloted was on 293,000 miles. When it went and was replaced by a 6 pot Euro Cargo, I'll grudgingly admit they seemed faster, and would happily climb to speeds well past the where the tacho ended, and the 6 odd tonne 2.8 Daily vans would do 95 on a flat if pushed.
