I concur - used to have a saloon Polo of that generation. Pressing the brake pedal felt more like a suggestion that the car should maybe consider slowing down, rather than a direct control.

I had a couple of these. The issue was always that the drive from the gearbox to transfer box was through a woefully under engineered shaft. The splines on this shaft would strip and it was game over. This wrote most BX 4x4s off prematurely. I considered various options for a fix but once the few useable spares dried up you really only had the choice of reverting to 2wd.
