I think it is supposed to refer back to those cars where the driver sat outside and the passengers were under a roof.

Google "landau" or "brougham"

This Cadillac with it's front-drive 32valve engine and that roof makes it a bit of a paradox. Nice car, shame about the daft roof.

Yeah, its not as common as the complete vinyl roof but certainly a thing. Its all dealer installed/aftermarket on these, Im glad my DeVille didnt come with it. Looks great on the Fleetwood though where Cadillac did have it as a properly executed option, similar to the olden days.
