CJ, does the ABS run off a castellated / serrated ring around the hub or drive-shafts?

If so, sometimes mud or crap can build up in the gaps and cause ABS weirdness, especially at low speeds. See if there's any crud you can knock out to improve things.

If you cancel an insurance policy because the broker's being a nob, will that cause problems with another company if you try and reinsure it after cancelling the first policy?

Can an alloy wheel really go porous and lead to a slow puncture?? - I've had a new tyre & valve fitted to the Clio, but it still deflates over 7-10 days :(

Yes. See: Allegro Equipe. Also happened on my Impreza after I got new tyres - the tyre place hadn't roughened up the inside of the rim (where the beading goes) and the air was escaping around the rim. I took it to another place, and they said that there was too much lacquer on the rim. Sanded it a bit, job done.

Not downright porous, but due to it's molecular structure, aluminium alloy is prone to cracking. It may have developed a hairline crack you can only see when you x-ray the wheel.

I'd have thought it's much more likely to be air escaping under the paint. Is it at all scabby?

Solution: tyres off, around the rim, and where the tyres touch the wheel (seat), rub all paint off down to bare, smooth metal and repaint. I've found smooth silver Hammerite (brush on or sprayed) is fine and sticks well long term.

How do I "quote" people on the forum now without doing it manually? The old button has disappeared :?

Works for me. You're obviously crapper than you thought.

It's not just you, mine has disappeared too. It's been since the great spam flood of '12 so I assume some accounts have been locked down in some way. I can't edit existing posts either as there's no button for that any more. I expect it'll come back in the fullness of time.

Fair enough, that still works, it's just a little odd that the buttons have vanished. Not a major worry though.

When did fuel consumption become a big selling point?

been googleing to find official figures for 50/60's vehicle but doesn't feature, was it after the fuel crisis in the 70's maybe?

Yup, about 1973/4, with the Arab attack on Israel during Yum Kipper. The Yanks supported Israel and OPEC slapped the West down with an embargo on oil.

And so it began....

Just wondering, what happened to Betaboy?, He hosted Shitefestâ„¢ and then vanished in thin air again, did we really upset him that much with the mess?

I might have finally scored a pair of front doors for the Nova (many thanks to Cavette for suggesting PNG, wouldn't have found them else), only downside is that they're in Essex and I am in Devon.

Assuming that your average courier would probably be able to make them look even worse than the tractor-bashed articles I already have, does anyone have any suggestions on a safe, cheap way to get them back? I could go and get them if all else fails, just a bit of a pain as it will be hard to get the time to go over there soon enough.

Can someone please explain what this picture means?

I've been on here five years, so wouldn't call myself a noob, but this one has passed me by.

Thanks!

The viewer is a helpless witness of an impending disaster, and will never know the outcome because the painter has not painted it yet. In Horse and Train, the artist portrays a choice between the horse and the engineer in the train.

The observer witnesses the confrontation between two freedoms; the freedom of the engineer and the freedom of the horse. The horse is free to change direction and the engineer is free to engage the brakes.

Ah, thank you. That explains it. I don't think I'll be using it very much...

I have just purchased issue 2 of Jalopy mag and read it.

Inside the back cover is an advert for a sister mag - Bad Car ostensibly about crap modifications.

Was this real?

Or just a bit of fun?

I've Googled it, but nothing shows up...

Posted

thats strange, when i googled it I got 45000 links to retrorides

"Bad Cars" in Jalopy never existed as a standalone mag, it was just a mock-up.

If you like the "Running Out of Road" column that Mark Williams wrote (ex-BIKE editor, I think, and founding publisher of Jalopy), he used to write a good column in the early/mid 90s mag Car Choice about buying/selling shitters in a similar vein.

Thanks Mr Welfare, as I suspected.

FYI Rod Kerr - the editor still writes the occasional article (normally about motorbikes) in the Daily Telegraph.

They retain his amusing dryness.

Can a Visa 652cc bicylindre run on unleaded, or does it have to be fueled with four star?
