I've bought a cheap, red box compression tester off eBay. Never done a compression test before so not entirely sure how it's done.

Take all the spark plugs out? Or leave the others in?

What do you do about the carbs and stopping fuel being sucked through?

I guess do it all once dry and then wet. Is wet necessary if you get good dry readings?

When wet, is one squirt from the oil can sufficient per cylinder?

How do you remove the oil from the cylinder after? (I have no compressed air)

Cheers!

All plugs out, full throttle, turn over 7 puffs and watch the gauge to see how quickly the needle moves. I've always wanted to see minimum about 100 PSI build up soonish, although happy enough with a begrudged 90. Wet is only to determine if it's valves or cylinder loosing the compression as will help rings seal but not valves, You remove the oil afterwards while rebuilding.

Can I have suggestions on getting an engine and box from Redruth Cornwall to Gatwick, Surrey? Have asked seller if they can drain the oils and strap it on a pallet.

Depending on what type of finance she has on the vehicle depends on what she can do.

I work as a buyer for Evans Halshaw, so deal with this daily.

HP - as mentioned above, you can hand the car back and walk away at a certain point in the agreement.

PCP - No chance of doing the above, as with the 'balloon payment' at the end you will never be over the threshold to had it back until the end of the agreement. Where the options are, pay off balloon payment or hand car back or refinance.

First things first, get a settlement figure from the finance company. Normally this will be more than the car is worth, however, I've had a few instances where the opposite has been the case - Had a Corsa on a PCP the other week, which had a big dent in the rear qtr, and had gone over the mileage allowance. we costed out a repair and the cost of the excess mileage, on top of the finance settlement, and the customer ended up getting around £120 back as a balance as the car booked quite high.

We'll pay more than WBAC, often only by their admin fee, but often we will pay quite a bit more if it's retailable stock. WBAC are owned by BCA so everything goes to block, hence the low values given.

You can get a free valuation on EH's website, obviously it doesn't take into consideration any damage, we'll look round the car when the cust brings it in. But it will give you a ball park figure.

If in negative equity, we will still take the car, with the customer stumping up the difference, and we will clear the finance for them. If it's the other way round, we'll pay the cust any difference via BACS transfer.

With the plugs out there isn't any vacuum to suck through the inlets with!

I was thinking more the one with compression tester in would be sucking in fuel. I guess a bit of fuel spray doesn't kill the gauges?

Not a problem unless you have four carbs and a compression tester with no vent valve...

What's the best way of getting an outer bush casing out of a wishbone?  I've got the front wishbone off the 205; the middle metal bore just fell out of the bush and I was able to pull the rubber off with my fingers (that's how knackered it was), but the outer casing is still in there.  It looks like if I got it in a vice (I don't own one, but I could probably take it round a mate's and borrow his), I could get a screwdriver blade on the lip of the bush and twat it with a hammer, but I don't know whether that would knock it out or whether it'd be in there too tight?  Any other ways that don't involve specialised tools?

Slice the side with a hacksaw first. Then use a cold chisel/old screwdriver to bend the edge in & drive it out.

Ford Mondeo mk4, the bonnet doesnt have gas struts, just the old fashioned metal pole, which is fine except the one on my old mans car has worked loose, theres a black plastic clip which goes into the slam panel and the end of the metal pole locates through that, however as I say the metal pole has worked loose of the clip, the pole has a bend in it at the end where it goes into the clip and the straight pole part left obviously angles at a 90degree angle so it can either clip into the underside of the bonnet to hold it up or clip into the holder at the other side of the slam panel when its closed, and on the bit of the pole with the bend theres an extra lip, if this is pushed through the clip in the slam panel the angle is wrong for both clipping the other end into the holder and also for locating into the hole in the underside of the bonnet to hold it up so just forces the clip out of the hole on the slam panel, if the lip is left outside the clip is loose and the whole pole can simply be pulled out.

What am i missing here? it cant be that difficult surely? But no matter where I put the lip on the bonnet pole inside the clip so its hidden (wrong angle so pulls clip out) or outside (bonnet pole is loose and just pulls right out where it should be held in place) its just not happening.

Do we have a shiter in Bromsgrove who could buy and temporarily store a 406 for me?

Would be very handy. There’s an ice cream bribe involved if it helps.

Lord_Sterling seems to know the location of every storage facility in the West Midlands.....

Mk3 Mondeos have gas struts! I get the impression that the accountants started having too much say in Ford design in the early 2000s, my 2009 Focus just seems designed down to a price in a way that my previous 2001-4 Mondeos didn't, including the fiddly bonnet pole.

Sorry this doesn't in any way answer your question, but I couldn't resist a moan!

I think that I can drive other peoples cars, even if they are not currently insured.

This is all I can find in my policy documents.

As in I can go and buy a car (for someone else, with their money and their name and address being entered onto the V5) and drive it to their house, without having to insure it for me, first.

Is this correct or is it dodgy? (I'm a bit of a stickler for insurance, so not up for long roadside chats, at best,)

Thanks

Looks it. However I'd phone up your insurance company and ask to be completely sure.
