I know that you need to SORN your car if the insurance is up but I didn't know that Billy, are you sure?

I haven't this year but my motors have all spent months SORNed while insured over the last few years as you get sod all back off the companys when you cancel a policy.

You could well be right there, I probably got it the wrong way round sorry :(

Yeah, the car could still be stolen or catch fire whilst sorned (God forbid)

I can answer the SORN question (hooray!) because I've done the same thing recently.

If a car is on SORN and you inform the insurer, they will want to suspend your cover (but reduce/remove your payments to them) until the car is taxed again. However, the insurer (as far as I can find out) has no power to check that the car is taxed so if you just continue to insure it but obviously don't use it on the road you still build your NCB as usual (if applicable) and the insurer is none the wiser. Should you be unfortunate enough to have to make a claim while the car is on SORN I'm not sure where you stand, but hopefully that won't be an issue.

When I asked my insurer about putting the Polo on SORN they told me they'd suspend the policy until the car was taxed, but that it had to be taxed at least 1 month before my policy expired. It was also a ballache to make them understand it was SORN'd so I could repair it, not because I'd sold or scrapped the car, took several phone calls to get that point across until I eventually just told them OMG YOU GUYS IT'S FIXED NAO KTHXBAI.

At renewal, I think I'm going to jump ship to a specialist insurer, I have this sneaking suspicion Admiral are only going to be competitive for my first year.

Thanks for clearing that one up. I'll leave them non the wiser. On a limited milage policy they arn't even interested in asking me the cars milage at the start of the policy. I guess trivial details such as these arn't important to them :)

What are these "retaining devices" called ?

(Click pictures if they are too small)

Thanks !

*Edit - After some basic research, i think they are called "Cvj boot clips" ... which would make sence

Now to find a place that can send them ASAP

Try Chester Exhausts (Bumpers Lane, just down the road from the mighty Chester F.C) Mark. They dll all manner of stuff besides exhausts now. If they have them in I can collect one weekday and meet you in E.Port somewhere if wanted.

Just what is it that makes these so valuable, even as basket case resto projects?

porsche-914-02.jpg

They aren't 100% Porsche and weren't exactly a critical or sales success. Being LHD only they should be worth MGB money.

I'd love to try one though, has anyone here ever driven one? (Expected answer: no)

Is there a difference between a standard seat cover and one that goes over an airbag? Trying to avoid the ballache of swapping the old seat covers onto new seats instead of just the airbag...

Yup, airbag seat covers will rip where the airbag is if the 'bag is deployed. Non-bag covers won't, and the airbag has to go somewhere....

I think you need to have registerred on the forum more than 3yrs ago or something daft ... I didn't, so had to pay £10 for my last ad on there.

Ads in the motorsport section of PH are still free I think

Auto transmission question here.

The GM180 auto box was fitted to a lot of cars over the years and from what I can see it's the same unit used in everything. Same ratios etc, so theoretically the same torque capacity. Therefore, it should be possible to take any engine that used the GM180 box and by using the correct torque converter, starter and bellhousing bolt another engine that also used the GM 180 straight in. Have I missed something, or isn't this how auto boxes work?

Ok, I know there'll be the odd clearance issue, engine mountings will have to be made along with downpipes etc and wiring will need attending to, but a 3.9 litre V8 604 could be quite easy to do.

An insurance question (sorry).

I've just had a look through my policy on the Princess and it has got me puzzled. On the phone, I was told I had to have a second car insured and owned by myself (which I do) to qualify for the classic policy. However, I can't find any reference to this in the paperwork. Does that mean I do or don't need to have another car owned and insured by myself? If it's not in the paperwork, I have a sneaking suspicion I can then put the Polo on a modified classic policy (he's old enough to qualify) and save myself a lot of money at renewal, but at the same time I don't want to end up not actually being insured.

I also note that the car has to be garaged at home between 10pm and 6am as any damage or theft during these hours if the car isn't garaged isn't covered... and I can see that being an issue occasionally because doesn't that mean when I've driven the car after 10pm I've technically been doing so without insurance?

Does anybody know what the price of crude is doing at the moment? Seems that pez and diz have stalled at the ridiculous level brought on by the "OMG for heaven's sake whatever you do don't go out and panic buy..." debacle. Not that this in in any way surprising, of course.

That looks to me to be wholly unreasonable*, even assuming you have a garage you can get a car in! Suppose you had to start work 25 miles away at 5am (as I've done in the past)? That would, according to the terms you quote, make your entire commute illegal. So you can't go to work to earn money to pay the ridiculous premium... yeah well done, insurer. Bullet/foot interface there. Point out the stupidity of the clause and demand a new document without it. If they won't play, shop around.

*Life has proved to me many times that what I may think reasonable, or unreasonable, is often precisely opposite to what the "powers-that-be" or general public (delete as applicable) deem to be the case. So good luck.

Yes I know I'm talking about Protons again - but what do you think about the Gen 2 Ecologic?

I know the name sounds like a washing machine!

I think that you need to stop asking "What do you think?"-type questions about Protons and be more specific about the information you're looking for (i.e. are Gen 2 Ecologic Protons reliable, what's their build quality like, are they nice to drive, how high are residuals likely to be, etc.) otherwise people will just write you off as a troll and ignore you.

Well what I mean is what do you think about there looks.

I'm not sure why there's so much vitriol for old 'YugoLada', he strikes me as utterly harmless.

Proton Gen-2? They look quite neat but I have no idea about them. If MG-Rover had survived they might have been a Rover 45 replacement.

Yes I'm good - its just a mistake I made with the whole Proton thing. I really like the Gen 2 :D

Irritating but harmless.

I'd have a Gen2 Persona, the Gen2 itself just doesn't look right. In saying that I never liked the old Saga/Iswara Aeroback either.

If I was pushed into taking a newish Proton, a second hand Impian. Or a diesel Persona.
