I know but I have to get to Lincoln (and back, obv) and I always end up going miles out of the sodding way on the journey home.

Another Rover/MG HGF question - if it's had the HG done, what are the chances of it going again?

Depends if it was done properly, the type/make of gasket used, did the liners move, has the head warped/gone porous, has all the coolant been removed from the sump/oil from the rad.

I have the v5 for the Yugo, which is still in the name of the owner before the person I bought it off. He's signed it but dated it December 2011. Should I do the same since it wasn't actually the date I bought it?

Think I've asked this before but couldn't find it on here sorry:

Just outside Worksop there's a nice 'new' junction onto the A1. Heading towards Lincoln the junction is easy to use but coming back they've blocked it off in the 'old' place and my steam powered shat nav keeps telling me to turn off where there isn't a turn off.

How do I get off the bypass and into Worksop please?

Try looking at it on Google maps, then go round it in streetview:

I know that area reasonably well but I can't think which bit you mean. Are you coming through worksop on the a57? Or down the a1?

Do you mean the little roundabout just after the Wilko depot as you're coming towards Worksop on the a57?

Also: Does anyone have a trailer tent they want rid of for £cheap? I'm having no fun on ebay/gumtree at all.

I'd say that you'd be best signing it for the date you bought it, and include a letter saying who you bought it from, when and where - otherwise you may be liable for any fines accumulated between December and when you bought it.

Is there a quick way of uploading photos (e.g. from eBay or Google Images) onto this site, or do the pics have to be uploaded to Photobucket every time so that the IMG code can be copied?

Posted

Right click the image - and "get image url" or whatever, then bung that in the IMG tags.

Doesn't work with ebay cos they use some fancy system of displaying images, but it's fine for google images.

Posted

^ for ebay images, use the enlarge button to get a pop up window, then right click, select page info. Move to the media tab, there are the images and their real URLs so you can copy and put them in $(KGrHqR,!o4E8Vdw)yglBPV-WzNjYQ~~60_12.JPG

From another thread, "Tim Bishop said, "you know the secret of a good gear-change? Weight in the knob. Ever taken one off a *****(Jag?)? Weighs a ton".

Is this true?

Is this a universal rule?

I ask because the T2 has the lightest, flimsiest little button of a knob at the end of 15 feet of linkage,

Is this intentional?

I have an alternative knob which weighs 3 or 4 times as much (I'll check), if I swap will it really improve?

Or will it cause other problems, faster wear in linkage joints etc?

Update; original knob = 14g, replacement knob = 54g

I calculate that the improvement should be around 40%

Will keep you advised - Oh, it appears to have 5 gears as well now, will this actually work?

Cat Piss Tarpaulins...

Why do they do this?

I thought nothing of it in previous posts until adjusting the one on my BMW yesterday and then noticing I stinked of piss.

Said cover is getting to that knackered stage, ripping and it's become a bit brittle too but i bought it when I was "cash rich" and said cover now I've tracked them down is £131.18

I'd think there'd be a good chance of grounding out. And personally I wouldn't try it anywhere there's likely to be Plod/VOSA hanging about.

...picture of a monocle ...

We won't ask why you were searching Google Images for monocles.

I think I asked this before but can't remember what was said

About the temperature of air entering the engine - we see cold air intakes and also water injection. But I am convinced that my cars run better in the summer when the ambient air is warmer than in winter when the air coming in is cooler (and usually damper) and therefore supposedly more dense. I don't understand.

The volvo has started making an intermittent noise near the cambelt area. Using the power of google it looks like it is the VVT pulley / solenoid. What happens if this gives up the ghost? Never had this before on a car.

Posted

Sorry Moog can't help, I don't think my Volvos had a VVT pulley/solenoid, I am not even sure what they are

My question is:

Can I apply for a replacement for a lost registration document on the DVLA website (there doesn't appear to be a way)? If not how do I go about it?

Cheers m'dears

You need a from from the Post Office and a cheque for £25.00 which you post to DVLA. If you've got the new keeper's part of the V5 stick that in with the letter and then the replacement V5 is free!

Cheers Cav this is for my Dad's car - he seems to have kept every bit of paper sent to him since the year dot except the reg doc. Will be selling the car as soon as bodywork is sorted and service which is already paid for is completed. Unfortunately it is a car that can't be mentioned on here.

Is it an Iveco Corsa 1.0?

No, worse!

form downloaded and will be filled in when I get back from the pub for greater accuracy.

I drive a 1987 VW T25. DVLA have it down as a panel van, taxed as PLG. It's got 2 seats in the front, a double in the back and a bit of a camper conversion.

Is there some rule that I have to go 50mph on single carriageways and 60 on dual? I thought this was just for vans that are taxed as goods vehicle or some bollocks like that?

Posted

Tax is the same for your van and as it's registered as a commercial they could do you for doing 60mph in a 50mph (commercial limit) zone. Isn't the tax cheaper on a camper? If so maybe it'd be best to register it as a camper.

Posted

Tax is the same as I'd pay for a golf of the similar age (£120 or something for 6MO) even if it is a camper, AFAIK

DVLA have recently changed their mind on what they will call a camper - Even a fully converted T5 that we do (storage, fridge, 2 burners and sink, 4 berth, pop top roof and windows all round) only gets classed as a "van with windows" so I don't think I could twist their arm with my van! And I'm not putting windows in just to please the DVLA! Suppose I'll just have to drive more slowly and massively piss people off on A roads. Or not.

Posted

You'd like to think any decent rozzer would just leave you alone really as I'd imagine it'll be pretty obvious that you're not a builder or whatever, but I wouldn't like to bet you'd definately get away with it all the time.

When you look how many 'genuine' vans are driven at top speed everywhere you have to wonder if coppers aren't too arsed about you doing 60mph.

Posted

I'm cursing changing the tax class on my T2 from "minibus" to "PLG". At the time I was worried because I didn't have a D1 licence, now I do and realise that you don't need one to drive a small van with windows and 5 seats whatever it says on the taxdisc. What bites is that 5 years later it still only costs £165 per year to tax a minibus.

I'm not quite sure how it was in the minibus catergory in the first place, it was converted to a camper in 1979 and was only imported to the UK in 1988.

Colder [therefore denser] the air is, the better for performance, this seems to have a more noticeable effect incremental to cubic capacity, and also seems more noticeable with cars with ye olde carburretors. However at OMG SPEED KILLZ velocities, warmer is thinner, therefore less resistance in the form of drag.

Can most problems get fixed by getting everyone out of the van and back in?

I'll get me coat...

OOOH, I see what you did there...

Anyone weighed a Cat in lately? I've got a bit looking one off a mk3 golf gti (Looks like the OE one)

Worth about £40?

How many "seconds" of fuel do I use to start my engine, when hot? I often find myself switching it off at long traffic lights but have recently remembered the school of thought that says you use like 2ozs of petrol to start a car. When the engine's hot and it usually starts straight away without and throttle so it's not like I'm doing "mash your foot down" starts.
