mat_the_cat Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Why do truckers and van drivers often leave their engines running when they stop? I can understand it for extremes of temperature, but surely that's not the sole reason, especially in normal UK weather. Saving wear and tear on the starter and battery(s)? It obviously does, but why would the driver be bothered about that?

Mr_Bo11ox Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Does anyone know if a 405 automatic (ZF4HP14 transmission) can be towed on its wheels or will that knacker the gearbox?
saucedoctor Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Instructions for ZF4HP20. TOWINGThe transmission is lubricated when the engine is running since the enginedrives the transmission oil pump; therefore, when towing, the drive wheelsmust be raised off the ground. The vehicle can however be towed with thedrive wheels on the ground under exceptional circumstances as long as thefollowing conditions are complied with:• travel a distance of no more than 100 km,• drive at less than 70 km/h,• put lever in position N,• the vehicle must be horizontal or else be inclined by a maximum of 5° if therear wheels have to be raised.
stephen01 Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 My car is a 1968, does it need seat belts for its MOT?
NorfolkNWeigh Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 My car is a 1968, does it need seat belts for its MOT?Yes. I think the cut off date was 62. I remember my dad having to fit seatbelts in his 1965 HA van in about 68/9, even though you didn't have to use them until 1981.

TSI had something similar when I was dole scum and the bank were pissing about with my account, bought £300 of them from Morrisons. Took an absolute age registering with the redemption website and then putting each code in and then transferring the money across to Pay Pal/Ebay but they did work ok if a bit of a faff. tooSavvy 1
Asimo Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Has anyone here ever successfully sued a council over pothole damage and got any advice? This happened to me at the weekend Nasty, I trust you are ok? You don't get that sort of failiure with steel forks, were they carbon blades that failed where they were bonded to the crown? Is the wheel/ tyre damaged? I think the frame maker should take some of the blame for that one.
PiperCub Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Yes. I think the cut off date was 62. I remember my dad having to fit seatbelts in his 1965 HA van in about 68/9, even though you didn't have to use them until 1981.Got a feeling it's '65 not '62 for some reason? Will be in the MoT testers bible, I'm sure you can access it online.
Stroller133 Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 The Sport - do they just completely make up the stories like the one in another thread recently about a cock scolding lasagne incident, or does their readership consist of mongtards that actually do such things and then think its a good idea to publicise their antics? I mean their stories make The Sun and Fox News in America look positively high brow!
Richard Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Completely made up. I believe the chimney shitting picture was just a couple of guys larking around while doing renovation work on a property they had just bought. Grampian Police didn't even exist when the story was published, all Scottish forces had merged to form Police Scotland at the start of the year. In the early days of the Sunday Sport there was nothing real in it at all (London bus found on the Moon, that sort of thing), other than tits- and I had my doubts about those. Later on it seemed to cover mainstream news stories (when Gianni Versace was murdered they ran the headline "Shoots You, Sir") but it looks as if it's reverted to made up stuff again.
cort16 Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Another boring insurance question.I'm looking at a classic car that's been modified. I.e. it's a standard car with a HOT non standard engine in it. Does anyone know of an insurance company who's good with modifieds and aren't going to demand a 900 page mechanical inspection report?
Albert Ross Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Seatbelts to be fitted to all cars first manufactured after Jan 1st 1965. ( I have a 1961 LR, registered 1973 without belts...) FOor commercial vehicles, this becomes 1967
Spiny Norman Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 Do halogen bulbs deteriorate over time while being stored? I've just had to change the second (same) H4 headlamp bulb on the Volvo in as many weeks. Either this thing has a serious OMNOMNOM bulb habit or the ones I've had in the cupboard for a few years were duds. They've been on a shelf in their packets so haven't been handled or jolted.
cort16 Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Has anyone experience of running a car with bike carbs on it. I'm potentially looking at quite a nice Manta GTE running a red top with R1 bike carbs.Sounds GR8 in principle but I'm worried about the practicalities like low mph, unreliability, fire, over fuelling, underfuelling and wombling free. cobblers 1
robinmasters Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Can anyone recommend a book on the history of Rover/BL/Austin etc? I will entirely understand if I'm escorted off the premises for not having even a basic grasp of what happened to our car industry.
trigger Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I can recommend this, it's a magazine sold by WH Smith but covers most stuff, it's a pretty good read really. Edit - There's a copy on ebay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRITISH-LEYLAND-FROM-STEAM-WAGON-TO-SEVENTIES-STRIFE-BMC-ROVER-MG-TRIUMPH-AEC-/231369763843?pt=Non_Fiction&hash=item35deb66c03 Craig the Princess and robinmasters 2
Richard Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I have a book called The Motor Makers by Martin Adeney. It's not quite what you're after because it pre-dates the Rover era and covers the British motor industry in general right from the start. It's only about 200 pages so it's far from comprehensive but it gives a good general background. http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchResults?sts=t&tn=the+motor+makers robinmasters 1
Leyland Lawrence Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Do cars painted red still suffer from paint fade and turn pink or has that problem been resolved?
tooSavvy Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Do cars painted red still suffer from paint fade and turn pink or has that problem been resolved? Err... BMW don't sell RED cars in the Verry Sunnny Mediterranean climes... true/false?? TS
HH-R Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I still see 07/08 Coarser Ds with knackered red paint.
HH-R Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 AROnline is a GR9 resource of BL History - here is a complete history in 5 parts http://www.aronline.co.uk/blogs/facts-and-figures/history/british-leyland-the-grand-illusion/ The individual development stories are packed full of info and insight into the company's issues at the time. robinmasters 1
cort16 Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 But when you pick then up from the dealership they're blue myglaren 1
dave21478 Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Its really, really rare to see a modern-ish red car round here. Metallic burgandy are fairly common though. The only non metallic reds I see with any regularity are my own Landy and a few small cars by Toyota.

I'm potentially looking at quite a nice Manta GTE running a red top with R1 bike carbs.Sounds GR8 in principle but I'm worried about the practicalities like low mph, unreliability, fire, over fuelling, underfuelling and wombling free.A mate at school was on about doing that on his Polo. At great length. Apparently, the common probs are peaky power delivery, and 4x carbs being a swine to keep tuned together. Don't know if he ever did it, but I can check around over the weekend?
