and the car's not bad either took me a while as well to work that one out

^^^ That exactly what was tickling the back of my mind. I thought there was something but couldn't remember what it was or what it was called.

Also, does anyone know why my key fob only works within about a 1 metre radius of the car? Yes I have changed the battery.

Is it an Infra Red one? They have quite a small range.

What kind of car is it? Some of them have poor range anyway... My Rover 45 was poor, and the facelift 25 was even worse. It didn't even work if you were standing at the boot (and the only way to open the boot was to use the button on the fob...). Fiats in comparison are pretty good, mk2 Puntos and mk3 Pandas are anyway. Can unlock my car from the other side of a car park.

mine has the usual Penny Battery [3V] but, as an experiment, I cobbled up 2x AAA 1.5V and the range shot up from 10Ft to about 30Ft

hasn't fried the chip (oh.. LoL) so it seems to be a good whack of Amp rather than Volt to get range. It isn't IR.

*the plain key is a spare cut for me, the Proton key has the batteries taped down the key metal.

If you change wheel/tyre size, do you need to use different pressures?

And a related question, are lower profile tyres more likely to lose air over rough roads because they have more give in the sidewalls to absorb the bumps?

Posted

Its owned by the farm further round and they can be precious (related to my idiot landlord). They have a massive pile of gravel they use to fill the holes when they get unbearable.

I think i might just have to drive at 5 mph over the bumps and keep fingers crossed

Have a look under the Saab, on mine the exhaust clamp in the middle of the exhaust has been fitted with the nuts facing down which means it tends to catch on speed bumps.

Or put a riv nut in the tube

Many thanks.

Ordered some of these after the knock in steel ones I tried were too small and very expensive.  Hammered on in as a test and it works a treat, a quick file or drill inside the tube or something should do the trick.  Ok so I'm not using them as they are supposed to be but they do what I need without arsing about with a tap to make the threads etc.

How would you tell? You literally have to be standing right by the door for it to work, whereas the Volvo would do it from the other side of the car park

Infrared has a blackish "bulb" poking out of the key, and a receiver up near the rear view mirror. Think like a TV remote, works in straight lines using invisible light.

You can test infra red remotes are working using a digital camera.

Non motoring I'm afraid; has any one done the SIA test thingy? What's involved, and how easy is it to pass/get?

In that case no, it isn't infrared

Should I ask a stupid question in here regarding a potential future purpose or start a seperate thread?

Now, if that isn't a stupid question, I don't know what is!

My 405 infrared works... But only when you are sitting in the car. That's good for if you are being attacked by zombies and need to lock the doors but cant be arsed to push the door knob down. :)

But as every horror fan knows, a car will never start when you're being chased. I assume French car designers are big fans of the genre.

Unless it's an iPhone, 4S and onwards have an IR filter.

And given this is Autoshite, you also can't do it on a Nokia 3210. It has no camera.

Did I see an Autoshite person in Caernarfon in a black with red coachlines Nissan cherry?

What courier will move a motorbike exhaust for not much money?

Alternatively is anybody driving from Minehead to Reading in the near future?

I use Shiply and Anyvan. Have you tried for a quote? There are guys on ebay that will move parts.

My cortina is a pig to start when it's been sitting. You have to crank it for ever to get it going. I suspect the fuel is running back to the tank overnight so I needs to pump it back up to the carb to get it going. Is there some kind of generic non return valve I can fit so it doesn't do this?

Posted

Most fuel pumps have a non return valve within them (I'm assuming the Cortina isn't a fuel injection model) which can fail causing your symptoms. I'd fit a new fuel pump rather than mess around with fitting an additional valve.

Is there any good way to prepare a surface for reattaching exhaust header pipes (or I suppose the manifold in a car) to the cylinder head? Is it worth cleaning the surfaces (with what?)? Greasing anything? Or is it just best to let the gaskets do their job?

Posted

I'd try to make sure the surfaces were free of previous gaskets and crud, perhaps using a fine file bridged across the opposite surfaces to avoid digging into the gasket face itself if there's enough space to do so.

The exhaust gasket repair gunk I have suggests degreasing any surface before applying. Any water, dirt, grease can create hotspots or shift over time and not let the gasket go its job as well as it might.

I'm fairly sure that the Autoshite bike I just bought spent Saturday in Preston.  It was briefly in Wales on the Chester to Oswestry run on the way back on Sunday.

Spooky
