Cheers for that reply. Just wondered,as someone told me they used a turbo from an escort 1.8 td on a 1.3 hcs pushrod engine and it worked. But that may be complete and utter tosh.

Posted

I have always read that diesel turbos work in a different rev range...as most TD's don't rev as high as a pez block will you may be very disappointed.....up to you but I don't think it will be that successful...............

Of all the ex-diesel turbos to pick, for a Scrapheap Challenge type conversion, that wouldn't be the one. From memory, that engine only ever really properly came on boost between 2-3000rpm, and then the game was well up at 4000. Even an HCS will do more revs than that, so the chances of there being much boost beyond about 4000rpm (given that the 1300 engine will shove out less exhaust gas than a 1800) would be slim, I'd think.

Still, for the modest outlay of a bit of 1/4" steel plate to sandwich between two headgaskets, some silicon pipe, and lots of cutting, filing, drilling, and flange welding, it could be a giggle.

I've heard of a Rover V8 and a VW VR6 being twin-turbo'd with blowers removed from VW TDi's, with fair success. So it can be done.

Also (somewhat belatedly) cheers Joe, for the copper wire on the soldering iron trick!

Right this is probably really obvious, but what is the difference between a diesel turbo unit and a petrol one. Could a diesel turbo unit be fitted to a petrol car?

Petrol engine exhaust gases are far hotter than a diesel's, turbine manufacture and design will therefore vary accordingly.

Petrol turbochargers will also require far faster - almost instantaneous - spool up times as engine speed is controlled by air flow throttling, and not fuel metering as in diesels (i.e. air flow rate changes rapidly in petrols, but not in diesels).

A diesel turbocharger is designed for somewhat "relaxing" engine conditions, a petrol engine faces far greater technical challenges.

Thanks for the informative replies (by the way I am NOT turboing my fiesta, I just wanted the turbo differences explained).

Although, if someone had a spare block, turbo, pipework and a suitable turbo carb, then yes, I would consider just for the stupid factor.

What's the best insurance company for cars over 20 years old?

I am 'eyeing' a 1991 Volvo 940 turbo-diesel saloon, but it'd only work for me if I could arrange classic car insurance. Or drive it into a ditch, uninsured.

I've found Cherish to be an ok company, but you're best getting spazzed on crystal meth and ringing them all, as premiums and conditions will vary.

What's a slightly scruffy but pretty sound T&T'd 1967 RT40 Toyota Corona worth? I've put the Stagea up on the blue forum for £1200 and got a lad wanting to do a swap. It's really not what I was after, and he's in Preston which doesn't help, but the idea is niggling away at me - I have no clue what such a car would be worth though so no idea if I'd be getting a good deal or not.

Bit late on the reply to this but I've only just seen it.

I assume it's the red car in this pic

007-12.jpg

as there isn't that many T&T'd RT40's left these days.

It was the Toyota Enthusiast Club Magazine Editor's car for the past 8 or so years but as he's getting on a bit he decided to thin out his collection ( 3 Crowns, a later Corona, a Carina and a Camry that I know of !!) so the little RT went to a fellow club member in Southport. He soon chopped it in to a guy called Ahmad who seems to be collecting RT40s.

Value wise, it's very difficult as they are quite rare now but not ultra-desireable in 'classic' circles. I'd put this one at £800 -£1200 due to the tax/test status and with it being a known car within club circles.

Regards, Ian.

Can a scrapman (from a scrap/breakers yard) come and collect a car without suspension? I want to use steering rack/wishbones, etc on another car, and prefer not to take them off after I've took it up to the scrapyard?

Posted

Dismantle it when it can be reached by a Hi-Ab, then I recon it will be no bother.

Posted

Of course they can. I dismantled an Astra F Estate on my street, the day before a 2 week holiday abroad, and I left the shell full of scrap engines in each footwell etc, sitting on 4 fucked tyres, I aerosoled onto the roof "THIS ONE TO GO" and left a big note on my daily driver (which looked a lot worse than the scrapped one) "LEAVE THIS ONE HERE" and the deal was done. The looks the elderly neighbours gave me was like "You're not leaving THAT THERE are you???" When I got home, the correct car had gone, tyres stacked in the garden, I had a card through the door, I rang the guy, asked him what I owed him, and he just said "use me again for jobs like that please, I had to do nothing to it to weigh it in" Oil Slick Rick, you're a gent. It must have earned him 3 figures easy, as it weighed 2 tons minimum.

Posted

Oil slick rick took the mk3 golf I bummed for the engine, I just wanted it shifted but it was a sunday afternoon, he was still dead happy to come for it though, but to be fair he probably got a oner for it and all the shit inside it. He wasn't bothered about the bags of rubbish and old engine oil inside it or owt.

I see "safe" cars with no suspension every day, "stance" innit.

That Toyota is great! I'd snap his arm off if I were you, what a rarity and looks a lovely thing to trundle around in too.

When I say scrapman, I'm hoping to weigh it in and get cash back as I have a load of other scrap to throw in the back.

Is it possible to hydrolock a cylinder with a dodgy injector on a diesel car? When I started this Smart I've got the other day it wouldn't rev, puffed a load of smoke and sounded RAF for about 2 minutes then it cleared and would rev up.

I'm worried diesel might be dripping out the injector, into the cylinder possibly causing engine kaboomo when I go to start it.

Sadly, another good lad that got pissed off on here, I think. He's about on the internet elsewhere I believe though.

Can anyone reccomend a decent 2 ton trolly jack up to about £70? I've got a cheapo 2 ton one but it doesn't jack the car up far enough to get a decent height on the axle stands.

This RAC one for 50 quid looks like its got a decent lift height but being from argos its running the possibility of being crap.
