Looks like a immobiliser type thing - you get a circular keyfob thing that presses onto it.

Posted

Like said above, could just be used to identify a particular driver along with some vehicle logging equipment. Some people would use it to bollock the driver that's been hooning like a bellend.

Posted

Could be a tracker, but it wouldn't be the first time someone pays good money for an aftermarket immobiliser on a car that already has one.

My mate bought a Saxo VTR with a bill in the history for a £1400 immobiliser/alarm. It took 5 minutes to bypass.

Same goes for all the old giffers parked in Morrisons fitting diskloks to new Corsas etc.

Could be - it's just an ID tag and reader, we used to sell them in Maplin. Used in the days before RFID cards and stuff for access control.

I have got to collect a car for a customer on Sunday from Newcastle. Flying up and driving it back to Somerset. What is the best route back as I know the M1 is a bit fucked. I doubt I can take my sat nav due to stupid flying rules and it's battery is fucked so the easier route the better really.

Ncl - Scotch corner A1m

Sc - Tebay A66

Tb - Southways M6 et al

Satnav can go in hand luggague no problem - I do it all the time.

But I believe you have to be able to turn it on. The battery is so buggered it won't fire up unless it's plugged in

Really? I have never had to turn it on. I normally travel with laptop, phone and satnav all in the same bag and never had problems previously. Stuff like that is specific to the airport security checkpoint rather than the airline, I would imagine.

Where else can i try for an exhaust for the Kia. Euro Car parts don't have one.

Have you tried Mister Auto? They list exhaust parts for the Shuma I. Not sure which one you have.

Oh they will ! It's just listed as a rear suspension arm on a w124 merc

Quickest way back is to take the A69 to Carlisle then go down M6. Much quicker than the poxy A1. Never mind what sat nav says ☺

Find your nearest power flow dealer and get them to make you one.

I'd recommend Turriff Tyres, but Turriff isn't exactly convenient for you....

They made my Dolly 1300 a new front pipe, it's pretty good.

buy a cheapo phone boosty battery thing to run it off....

Exhaust Wrap

Next week, I will have a new, and hopefully correct new exhaust for the ZX. Would there be any point in wrapping it whilst it's off the car?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/High-Quality-Exhaust-Manifold-Downpipe-Heat-Wrap-10m-10-30cm-Ties-rap-/191797018488?hash=item2ca7fe3f78:g:PhMAAOSw8-tWapVu

Pro's that I can think of:

May silence the exhaust a bit

Con's that I can think of:

May hold the water, rotting the exhaust out quicker...

Anyone got any for's or againsts?

Posted

Exhaust wrap ... I wouldn't bother unless it's a high performance car. Then only the manifold and I'd probably go for a ceramic type coating instead of wrap ... I may have looked in to this for a certain Daihatsu.

It's the UV from sunshine that yellows plastic headlights - on the outside where you can polish it off.

Can you buy thermostat o rings on their own? It's a bit skin flint I know but the OE thermostat works fine and is probably much better than some shite hawk pattern part.

I think this on both sides of the reflector.

I know that yellowing lenses on Mk1 Mondeos were blamed on the wrong kind of bulb. I'd be more inclined to blame it on the wrong kind of lens material.

No idea, but what about a bead of silicon type instant gasket around the old one?

Oh, and I agree new thermostats are generally shit. I've had 2 fail in less than a year and think the one I put in the aerodeck in July has died as well.

I'm not sure it'd work unless you get it bang on.

Euro Car Parts do the gasket but there are none in stock locally and they charge a fuckton to deliver here.

With cambelt intervals, is the mileage a more important factor than the number of years that have passed?

Possible stupid question, as the car has been used less. But for all I know parts can wear out just by being old.

Posted

Both. It can have done zero miles and still be cracked and stiff if it's been sat for years - it's just rubber after all, and you wouldn't go bombing down the motorway on old, cracked tyres.

Probably depends slightly on whether it's an interference engine or not though, whether you feel it's worth the risk - one way you've got the inconvenience of getting recovered home, the other way you've got the inconvenience of fishing valve heads from the bottom of the crank case via the big hole in the piston. Ask me how I know.
