About that, if I did weigh it in, would I score more if I whipped off the cat/batt/wheels and weighed them in separately?

Best bet is to phone the scrap yard you intend to take it to, some will lift the car and price the cat and add this to your weight money, I don't do this so can't say if they generally pay well but as you aren't dealing in bulk numbers this may be the easiest way. Battery probably worth saving it untill you get a few you can do these by weight or by unit price they were £6 about 8 months ago but are down to £4 this week, weight wise they were about £260 a tonne now £200. With Alloys yards will normally add on for these, if you do them yourself you needc to strip off the tyre, valve and weights I got £8 a stripoped unit last week. If you have too much time on your hands you could always remove the loom cut off all the connectors and conduit.

How much does it cost to strap an engine to a pallet if someone else is paying the courier costs?

Posted

For those of us who don't frequent PistonHeads forum: is it fair to assume it's full of people bickering over the power output of the latest Porsche or bragging about their Atomcraft Najt Technic 9.1 being able to do a lap of Oulton Park in one nano second?

Posted

Possibly.

I only look in when I get sent a link.

However, there is a really good thread by a guy who owns a Mclaren F1 and has put a lot of miles on it. I know it doesn't really fit here but its more about the ownership experience, problems tyre choice etc

I always read the running reports in magazines first.

I would imagine it depends on the yard,

When I picked up an engine for my Megane they were chuffed that I'd brought a pickup truck as it was easy to load (as is a pallet) rather than trying to manouver it into a hatchback. They had cut a length of seatbelt from a scrapper to lift it with and were happy to leave it attatched. I would assume that they could use that to tie it to the pallet.

If you've got an eager chap at the yard who has a pallet to hand then he may do it for free, an hours wage would be fair if he has to go looking for a pallet. Fuck knows what the miserable bastards at most yards will want though.

^^^It's my engine and me doing the strapping, so need to inform the buyer of costs.

I read Pistonheads from time to time and the Porsche section is just packed with 993 buffs telling you anything else is rubbish and the rest seem to spend all their

time worry about how much their's will be worth in the future.

You generally lose money on a car so if I had the money to buy a 911 the last thing I'd be bothered about is what it will be worth in 12 months time.

Try and find contact details for a bloke I know who did pallet work. I think he said £80 was the going rate but that was a while back now. Have you tried http://www.palletforce.com/ by the way?

I probably know the answer to this but I have changed my camper insurance over today to the new van. I asked if I could get commuting and also 3rd party cover and they chucked it in for free. Will I be covered to drive Scooters new steed up to Scotland if it doesnt have its own current insurance?

No.

Looks like you are

Unless it is expressly stated on the car insurance then you are covered under 3rd party even if the car isnt insured. There was a ruling on it in July http://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWCA/Civ/2011/749.html

My Camper insurance will cover me 3rd party as long as isnt used for the purpose of collecting a vehicle confiscated by Plod for not having insurance. Probably send the ANPR into fits and will have to have the documents on you otherwise they can take the car.

Has anyone successfully sued a penniless ebay wanker for the cost of car tax ?

Some Walter Mitty came to view a car on Sunday, made an offer I accepted but didn't have enough cash for a deposit. He sent the offer through ebay when he got home so I could accept and end the listing. We arranged for him to collect on Tuesday afternoon but due to cable theft the trains were delayed (I checked this to be true).Arranged for Wednesday via text message but he couldn't get here until 5 pm so would I tax it.Wednesday he was allegedly stuck in traffic so got home late and would be very late getting here so could he come today as he wasn't working today.Sent me a text at 8.30 this morning saying he would text when he was on the train.Nothing since.

As the car isn't registered to me I cannot cash the tax in so how do I go about taking him to the small claims court.

Why is it that so many grey imports suffer from OMG HGF LIK A ROVA? Even trusted brands such as the Toyota Hilux Surf (2.4 especially) turn into a kettle at the drop of a hat.

MOT runs out on 26th inst, Tax runs out at the end of the month. Can I get another years tax on Monday using old MOT certificate?

Tbh I doubt you'd get very far, unless you can prove that taxing the car was a condition of sale. Even then, probably best to chalk it up to experience I'm afraid

It's something that puzzles me too, I have a few theories.

The ownership profile in the UK, the vehicles are bought by the kind of people who will drive a poorly car until it breaks.

Automatic transmissions mean the engines are put under a bit more pressure.

The humid climate of Japan is tough on cooling systems.

Most grey imports are clocked.

What are those little plastic widgets on the top sides of car batteries for? Even if the battery doesn't come with 'em the holes are there for 'em on most!? :?

If I'm right in thinking you mean the little flip-up plastic flaps, they are, among other things, for covering up the terminals so they don't short against the bonnet/carelessly placed tools etc. My neighbour has a Toyota Picnic with the wrong battery in it (too tall) and the alarm kept going off as the battery kept arcing off the bonnet. A pair of these from the scrappy sorted it. They also keep muck and shite off the terminals.

No not flaps or spacers these things....

^^^ I always thought they were for venting gas if/when the battery gets over charged

Posted

Yes that's a vent to allow gases to escape on some cars there is an attached pipe (e.g Audi) so that it expells away from the bulkhead.

Posted

Are they not for cars that have the battery in the boot ? to vent the hydrogen out safely thus stoping it from turning into hindenburg on the M42

Not so much in DCI Banks. But then again. I'm glad everyone likes me avatar. :D

Sooooo jealous my mate got to interview her. Then again I had the chance to interview Aleks Krotowski and bailed because I am an ENORMOUS MARD. I would have just sat there and squeaked.

Anyway, now we've hosed the floor down, my silly question involves offset. If I were to buy for example some wheels with -6 offset, and fitted some 25 mm spacers to get the offset to 19 (car has +25 offset) would that knacker my wheel bearings \ create clearance issues with the brakes?

Oh how fit Raquel Cassidy is. OMG.

Would probably cause a bit of tramlining and other wankiness if you don't get the alignment put right afterwards. It'll go out a bit with loads moving slightly. Wouldn't worry massively about the bearings, but the brake issues you won't know until you try, although with 25mm spacers it'll probably be ok.

Not sure I'd be happy using inch wide spacers...

Posted

& if they're on the front they'd be a pig to balance

you'd have to get them done on the car.

I did this many years ago & it was fiasco.

It has occured to me that, even after all this time on here, I don't know the answer - how did Autoshite get started?

Was it a few people on another forum, a drunken pub idea or one person and it's just grown since?

The way I heard it, Adam and Eve found an old Singer Vogue under a tarp in the Garden Shed of Eden and put up some pictures. But one day Eve started posting about snakes, apples and off topic stuff, then Cain and Abel fell out about the pros and cons of capitalism and whether God votes Republican. So Adam went off and set up Autoshite.

(Srsly - good question)
