Well, today was the first time in a long time that I found myself having a bit of selfishly “me time”.  With that time I decided that I should begin to undress the Virgin. Dez kindly sent a link to the handbook that Zelandeth had made from paper to computerified, thank you both.
Following  the engine removal destructions in the non paper book on my phone I began to make some progress and found realisation that my eyes are failing.
First off I jacked (or in my case hoisted) the rear of the car and placed two stands in the position described only to find that once the rear was lowered that the stands were actually at the point of balance and that the front wheel also lifted from the ground!😜 this was soon rectified by placing some ballast in the footwell and a couple of rudimentary props to the rear.

Amusingly, this is exactly what I was doing today in 2018. I opted for the lift-out method.

not entirely sure you can get it out the top like that on Later Model 70's like @AdgeCutler's VJN953S as they have the rear chassis strengthening/crash protection bars in the engine bay, (Tho I have a feeling Adam might of managed it but im not 100% sure i'd have to check with him)

Brian was not left out today, he had the carbatooter off and cleaned, plug out and cleaned up, brakes checked over and adjusted, general lubrication

and then a good ol’ blip along his majesty’s highways.

That Victoria car has a Lancia look about it at the front, but from what I can see of the back end, perhaps not!

One of the first issues that I have found but not properly investigated yet, is the crankcase breather looks rather rotten.  I’m reckoning that there should be a spring and movement where I have a rust and seizure. Also the air cleaner brace has not been doing anything for some time, it has broken off at the base.IMG_1262.jpeg.0bd54f741adefe61cfac5f03af35cfba.jpeg

Well, engine removal has come to a grinding halt. One of the two variable pulleys, which should apparently just slide off of the shaft is refusing to budge. I have tried simply pulling, light prying and hitting the rear with a soft mallet, sadly the puller I had at hand was not large enough to reach around the diameter. I’m thinking that the only way forward is to fashion up a puller. I did have a quick attempt at removing the belt to remove lateral pressure but failed at that also. 😞

IIRC one or both of the shafts has a key that needs to be removed first, but you have probably found those already!

The second pulley moves freely up until the tension of the belt stops it, the first just will not move. It is keyed but it appears to be a simple parallel key which should just slide out with the pulley or remain in the key way? It doesn’t have a gib head.

Just incase the belt tension isn't helping getting them off, undo the adjuster bar for the chain case and the 3 or 4 bolts that clamp the chain housing in position.  You can see ones through a slot in the gearbox casing and further down they had penny washers on them.

Assuming like the last two of these I've worked on, yours will be a caked on black mess of shite so have a clean picture of one.

Keys ways are just open ended so the key will slide or stay and shouldn't prevent the pulley from coming off.

Oh I did not realise you where trying to do it with the drive belt still firmly in place, sorry every time I have done this job, the drive-belt has previously already removed itself from the equation LOL, right, yeah if your doing it with the drive-belt in place, then you either need to slacken off the belt as @Andyrew says/as @Zelandeth does, or if for whatever reason that cant be done, then you need to remove both pulley at the same time and hope the tension of the belt pulling them together does not cause too much binding

but if you have spare drive-belts, I would recommend just chopping off the old belt and getting it out of the way, unless your cousin, @Weird Car or @OldBlokeInACaravan has unknowingly replaced the drive-belt, its probably not long for this world anyhow!

The pulley looks like aluminium?   Heat gun, repeatedly, should free it.

Managed another hour after work today and backed off the chaincase (thanks for the picture Andyrew , everything is indeed caked in filth) and removed the belt. Still no movement. The pulley is Ali but it is bourne upon a steel sleeve.
