Has anyone had a lorry transported? Is it hi - NOW BODGE 50 HORSEBO11OX THREAD (Now with added turtles)

I did manage nearly 64 mpg over the entire run though. I guess the traveling back at 55 ish counteract the 80 ish run down there. Not bad for a 150bhp petrol auto. Mr bollocks I fear didn't achieve such a good figure.

Those Dodges are actually pretty good on fuel for such a big bastard - they'll do >30mpg if driven sensibly.

I hope you leave the ace cartoon horses on it, though.

Looks like a bargain! My Mrs would probably want that for her horses instead of dragging a trailer around

I have asked a couple of skilled mig-twirlers off here if they fancy getting involved as this is just too much for me time-wise. The truck was so cheap i feel I can afford to tip a decent sum into it to get to a sound basis for a horsebo11ox but lets see how it pans out.

MADE IN BRITAIN BITCHES!!!!!!

Still love it despite the rust! I suppose that’s horsey types though, driven around through mud and shit (literally) and rarely washed or hosed off.

Is it worth me asking what the availability of replacement panels is!? Or will it all have to be hand made and bespoke.

Posted

I particularly like how the front tyre is not to be inflated to 70psi. Oh no, that would be far too silly. 69psi it is.

(Also hurr hurr hurr 69)

I think there is ZERO panel availability for these heaps. Although you can buy dodge panel van rear arches in the states, which might make into a tolerable front arch repair section.

I like it too!!! I like its shite heritage, and I like the Perkins engine and I like the shape and size of it, its spot on for what I want, except I do not want another massive weldfest of my own. Enthusiastic shite welders apply here!!

Would be preferable if you could get a pre MOT check before the weldathon.

Find out what other expense is likely.

Are you still going Caravanette, car MOT route?

Posted

That looks pretty much par for the course for a 50-series to be honest.  Doubt a Cargo / MAN / whatever would have been a lot better grot-wise.

Could get the cab off to aid welding does the horse box make that impossible ?. Welding upwards with your head jammed in a wheel arch is the worst .

I remember going down Devon way to see family back in the 90s-00s and there was tons of crusty 50s around. They're great.

That built in Britain badge is mega too.

This woman welded under the wheelarch.

Welding. Not even once.

Not sure what the front end swap stood these guys at, but at least they could get right into the hard to reach areas!

Cab off would probably make it a lot easier...

Given how cheap you got it that's definitely worth sorting I think. It's already a rare old beast, and will be a lot of fun I think once done.

Plus side is that a lot of that grot isn't going to be visible, so the welding doesn't need to be pretty as long as it's solid.

Oh...cab interior photos please! Sorry... interior design nerd who's not familiar with these vehicles.

Established if the knock is definitely play in the linkage from steering box to arm or more focused on welding? As mentioned above a pre MOT may be a good idea as the chassis is the main structure of the vehicle.

They're not the most interesting interior.  Fairly plain plastic dash, instruments are in a big rectangular box in front of the driver not unlike an early SD1, massive two-spoke steering wheel, three seats with an engine cover in front of the middle passenger's knees.  Conventional handbrake, big long gear lever with dogleg first.  Conventional column stalks for indicators, horn and wipers, rocker switches for most other functions.

That's from memory, it's been a few years since I owned one.

Doesn't have to be exciting to be interesting. Merc 2/309d vans are one of my favourite examples and they're not exactly bristling with features.

Posted

That's not anywhere near as bad as one might expect for a sub £500 quid horsebox.  Hope you can wrassle some welders to glue it back together, looks eminently saveable.

Obligatory 69 wheel arch sticker comment.  Chortle, etc.

Did I read that it's currently MoTd? Might be worth finding out where that was and using them again.

I would like to see the pantograph wiper at full stretch myself, but that's just me...

Am I right in thinking you're oroginally from up this way, Bolleaux? That place near the Ershingtern turnoff on the A1 still sells rb44s and advertises 'parts available' so may be worth a try.

If it's currently MOT'd as private HGV would it not have needed to be done at a ministry place?

Hi, Usually yes because they are used to dealing with the size of vehicle.  When I worked for the bus company we turned one of the pits over to MOTs one day a week with a ministry examiner coming in to officiate, if there were spare slots we occasionally had a third party in for test all booked through the ministry.  It's a class 5 for playbuses and the like.
