Can I add the special order misery spec Daf 66 “L” to the list?

Who would actually go to the trouble of specifically wanting a car with:

No carpets

No brake servo and drums all round

No reversing light

No interior lights

No heated rear screen

No radio

Manual washer fluid pump

Perfection.

The history file supplied with Mrs DC's first Yaris indicated it was originally supplied as a competition prize - and as such appeared to be some sort of fleet spec version not available to the general public.

Not content with interior plastics the colour and texture of an Airfix kit, a pressed-fibre floor covering that was by no stretch 'carpet', and upholstery that was substantially more vinyl than fabric - in a final cheeseparing move they removed one of the tailgate gas struts and one of the bits of string to pull up the parcel shelf.

We've looked at other Mk1 Yaris photos online, and never found one quite as cheap 'n' nasty inside.

An old neighbour of mine used to have a B reg'd Montego 1.3 base, it surprisingly had a remote boot release, which was a bloody good job really, as the boot lock was buggered, and it was beige over brown, with brown interior, and had that Motorola push button AM radio. I fitted a new radiator for em on it. I think all bASe cars in the shite family should have a sticker in the back window saying ' It's all about da bASe'

I think you would have struggled to get a more basic Audi 100 than my old one.

The dashboard was just a load of blanked off switches, it had keep fit windows all round and a clock instead of a rev counter. The engine was the 1.8 Golf engine which struggled to lug its bulk about at any great speed.

Loved the car but by 'eck was it basic.

While it does have "Special" in it's name, my 2cv was very much the lowest spec model at the time and could out base most things. 3rd mirror was an option, no radio, cigarette lighter, rear windows don't open etc. Citroen even did a (jokey) advertising campaign talking about "transparent windows" and "fully round wheels" as there was so little equipment to mention.

Mum's Riva was buttery biscuit base, badged 1200L, it was optioned up with a passenger door mirror, and Motorola AM radio cassette with 2 speakers, black vinyl door cards & seats meant bum roastingly hot seats in summer, it did come with a decent tool kit, with inspection lamp and stirrup type pump for the tyres.

Here's BennyJP of this parish's mintola 1200L that has GL stripes added

The Autoshite 2040 bASe

I find the “Access” name particularly derogatory up against such decadence as “Laureate” and “Prestige”

My van is an L too, the bottom of the Relay range versus the far more common “Enterprise”

My early Fiesta Courier had no trim level, either in terms of on-vehicle badging or model name on the V5.

I therefore assumed 'base', but it was demonstrably better equipped than the slightly younger Courier Popular I bought for spares a while later. Digital clock in the dash deleted for example.

So kinda strange that a nameless variant wasn't the bottom of the range?

If we are playing the my cars more base than your cars game then I must win something for my van, this is 1984 remember, hardly the early days of motoring yet I have no reclining seats, the interior light has to be manually switched on, no cigarette lighter, no radio, no carpets and ply for door cards. In fact the only luxury items it does have are a lid on the glovebox and a trip milemeter. a328729566d3d7f1507a829748b1c35f.jpg

I did run around in a H reg very early mk5 Scrote 1.8D van and that just had a radio and vinyl seats, it was a shitbox and slow

I think Triggernometry's van is clearly a member of the Team Beige Buttery Biscuit bASe, mind you even Escort vans of that era were just as mingebag. Even in the late 1980s/early 1990s Group 4 had a fleet of Maestro 500 City 2.0D's, vinyl interior, no reclining seats due to a half height bulkhead made from ply, doors all were on Yale high security locks, and no radio, instead they had a 2 way unit.

My allegro deluxe is very base despite the name as is my maestro clubman.

I find trip mileometers to be a bit aspirational I’m afraid. Even my fiesta popular plus, which is at least two levels above base, didn’t have one.

Partner has a Focus Mk 2 Studio.  It's base.  Really base by modernish standards.

Features:

Electric windows

Power steering

Central locking

3dr

Non-colour-matching door handles

Non-colour matching bumpers

1.4 L engine (75 PS)

Wheel trims

No clock

And I absolutely love it.

This is what I was kind a saying about the 'edge' spec now, by today’s standards it’s like being homeless, but by the standards of 1983 it’s top of the range and then some.

I mean electric windows and central locking, they were basically all the features that differentiated my Orion Ghia from a base spec.

a clock instead of a rev counter

Want for this. Just the right combination of distracting and confusing.

Absolutely.

My 98 Ka was a base model.  There was a Ka2 and Ka3.  I had keep fit windows, no power steering, analogue clock, no temperature gauges and a cassette player (admittedly a luxury if it was 1983).  A proper 'base' model.

I absolutely adored that car and I'm very grateful to have learned in a car without power steering.  Kept a lot of bad habits at bay.

Did any 2CVs have opening rear windows?  None of mine have.

Mind you, the modern DS4 doesn't have opening rear windows, and that's supposed to be a "posh" car.

Sadly, I'm out.  It'd be a nice partner for the Sierra - but life's far too fucking short for some of this.  He wants me to bring £300 even though I can't have the car until next weekend, so what then?  He keeps the money and the car?  I leave a deposit and he drives around in the snow (which I'm incapable of surviving) until he's done with it? What if he bins it??!

Trust's a two way street.  It's supposed to be simple.

  • Drive car
  • Agree price
  • Drive off in car

I reckon he's a nice guy - and I reckon the car is, on balance, a decent proposition.  But I do enjoy people being transparent and straightforward (to the point of being blunt) as at least you know where you stand.

He's just played the trump card of "I've got other people waiting" so I'm going to let him sell it to one of them.

Although he can't, because they will no doubt want to drive it and drive off in it.

Saga.

I once agreed a deal to sell My 280 Capri and taking his 3.0S in part ex. The boy, who I didnt know from Adam, expected to take away the 280 and pay me the following week. He was annoyed when I told him to GTF

Picking it up next weekend.

I've only just flicked through the thread so forgive me if this has already been mentioned but the 1.6 Mondeo isn't eligible for banger racing. It's too tough for the class.

Why are so many deals on here extended to the point that they never happen?

Perhaps the best response to this is...

Sold Subject to Contract - Borniteidentity™ on behalf of Red5.

I'm not sure what more could have been done here to get you a satisfactory outcome any quicker.  Even if I'd given him the money there and then, it still wouldn't be on my driveway for reasons previously discussed.

I hate being a disappointment.

That's a good endorsement if ever there was one.

@Red5, I do have a HBoL I can post to you if needed. Gratis, natch.

I know it's little help but there was a place in Liverpool that ran a fleet of these as taxis and they could throw a clutch in one in under two hours on a virtual production line. Doubtless this was achieved with the use of sledge hammers and a blow torch.

I saved a 1600 GLX a few years ago, in fact there's a thread on it here if you search and it was by no means a bad car, easily capable of mixing it in the outside lane. I think I saw 110 out of it.

You can't.  You have to play the my vans more base than your vans game instead
