What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

I was actually pissed off about the queen. Picking her fingernails looking grumpy when the British team came out. She couldn't look more disinterested, even when the whole stadium turned round and applauded her Ceacesceau style.

Cemented my opinion that the royals should be taken out and shot asap like most of the rest of Europe did years ago.

What, you mean like Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Belgium...?

Anyway, I do agree that the Queen could have made a bit more of an effort when Team GB came out - OK she's pushing 90 and it was getting pretty late by then, but still. I have to say I was pretty surprised by the James Bond segment too - even though she only appeared on screen for about 15 seconds, that's 15 seconds more than any other British monarch has appeared on TV in that context.

She did look pissed off but I expect countless appearances at things like this at her age would grate a bit. The royals should 100% definately stay though, can't condone everything they've done (i.e hunting) but they're doing a good job (tourism etc) and we're eleven cajillion times better off with them, than being another faceless European republic ran by some wanker like Cameron or Brown imho.

As a compromise I really think they should put Wills in charge as soon as possible. At least he can pretend to be interested.

For me the jubilee was insane. Plebs cheering unelected monarchary going down a river on a massive golden barge. I think the ancient egyptians were probably the last to do something like that. Archaic.

Even Gaddafi didn't have that.

Posted

Ahh, but the difference is the people here didn't have to cheer if they didn't want to. I'd imagine someone like Gaddafi would have made sure everybody came out, or faced the dreaded knock by the police or military shortly afterwards.

Whatever you say about those 'plebs' they were there by choice and probably because they wanted to witness a great, British ceremony.

I didn't see much of it, but it was good to see Mike Oldfield getting dusted off again, but they really should have left poor old Muhammed Ali with what little dignity he has left. :(

Well done to Danny Boyle for the whole shebang, nothing says 'London 2012' better than some kids setting fire to stuff. I'm sure the knighthood's in the bag.

27 million squid's worth of taxes can be used on improvements that'd save a handful of lives (in addition to thousands of hours in lost time) each year on the A14. Instead, it gets blown on a performance which is part of a bigger event where the developed world does all it can to offer legitimacy to repressive regimes by 'celebrating' together with them, and apologising to North Korea when something goes wrong. And most people think it's ok. There's something wrong with the world, or with me. Or possibly with both.

There's only one way to settle this:

Royal family= Vauxhall Astra

Republicans= Ford Focus

There you go, job done.

Dammit. I wanted the Focus. The Astra is a nasty leftie Republican's car.

Bugger off. I wouldn't be seen dead in an Astra. :)

Nope, they should make Kate Queen 'cause she looks a damned sight better than the rest of them. They are only there to be seen after all.

Kate is there to produce future kings and queens, then its off to the underpass with her

What makes me grin? That the camera last night swept to every celebrity in the arena except Mitt Romney.

I'm a complete cynical bastard when it comes to stuff like this but I though the opening ceremony was totally ace and enjoyed it until all the atheletes came out then I got a bit bored. As for the 27 million I recon it's money well spent. Britain's been a right miserable place with all the banks, the mp's the press and what not so 27 mill is a drop in the ocean for bit of national cheers. I'm all for splashing a bit of cash on stuff like public art and the like as it does actually improve peoples lives by just cheering folk up.

Agree 100 percent Cort, I was of a similar frame of mind but thought last night was thoroughly excellent. And 27m is nothing to cheer the country up. Allowing for half of us being miserable bastards, and the other half enjoying it, each one of those who liked basically chipped in about a quid each for that display which I for one think is is half decent value

On the whole I enjoyed the Opening ceremony. I thought it was great that normal working people were given the chance to perform rather than professionals. The torch petals were awesome.

Mr Bean was as tiresome as usual, Lizzie looked bored stiff and wheeling Mohammad Ali out like some freak show made uncomfortable viewing.

Dizzy Rascal, Arctic Monkeys...pah! I'd have had Gina G and The Wurzels...they really know how to get a party rockin'!

Highlight for me was Mike Oldfield (guilty pleasure) I was literally speechless. Although the whole "Who've they got playing the Queen, then, wh... FUCKJESUS THAT'S THE ACTUAL QUEEN" 30 seconds was ace. I did LOL at the Queen not paying attention/looking fussed when the whole world turned round and clapped at her, and I wish the Rowan Atkinson segment had been about 50% shorter, then it would have been spot on I reckon. Obviously after the first 10 mins of Athletes walking along waving that drags a bit, as well, but they can't really avoid that. I'm thoroughly cynical and assumed it'd be an horrendous cringe-fest like these things always are and it REALLY wasn't. Good work.

Got a bit held up today and right at the front of the queue I could just about make out a caravan. Chundering away to myself about bloody tin boxes etc, we eventually caught it up on a bit of bypass. Turned out to be a Dutch registered DS towing a really tidy classic caravan. I just waved and smiled and slowly passed.

Sceptre sold today with minimal fuckwittery via an ad on car and classic.

I forgot it was on, as I was far too busy with the more important task of completing Mass Effect 2

Agree about Ali, that made me feel very uncomfortable. The rest was brilliantly done, apart from McCartney, who sounded dreadful. Knowing our prediliction for monumental cock-ups, it seemed to go without a hitch.

Pleased to see that there are some other Old Mikefield appreciators.

I haven't seen anything of the Olympics but did buy the DVD of TB2 and TB3 live premiers. Awesome stuff.

It is all on YT too.

As is

, which I also bought on CD at the same time as Mr Oldfirlds DVDs but spend more time watching the various concerts on YT, she is so damned cute and unpolished compared to other singers/musicians.

Proper musicshite instrument she has cobbled together there :)

Blimey. Am I right in thinking John Gordon SInclair "stars" in the live TB2 DVD? We're probably talking 15-18 years since I saw it, but that rings a bell* for some reason.

*sorry
