Tenancy of the office starts on Monday!!

Will now be spending the weekend making sure my workstation PC is all set up ready to be moved there. I've mostly been using my laptop for work recently because my home office is a tip right now, and my workflow has changed a bit since I was regularly using the workstation, so there's a bit of tweaking to be done.

I'm very excited, I think it'll be a big boost in my productivity and general wellbeing, since it'll get me out of the house regularly along with giving me better separation between work time and personal time. I think it'll also help me spend less on shite on the internet since it'll be less of a big deal to just nip to the shop to buy stationery and whatnot. (I live on a farm with only one bus an hour into town, so it can mean a multi-hour saga to get to the shop to buy whatever so I just buy it from amazon) Also means I'll be more inclined to go to the proper butcher and grocers since both are a short walk from the office.

I'd like to thank "quitting drinking" for this, since without doing that I'd probably not be feeling motivated enough about work to consider it, nor would it be as affordable.

Ireland’s rail network isn’t what it used to be, sadly but neither is ours. Always wish I’d been able to travel on the “Bundoran Express”. Brought a massive amount of holiday makers to the town in it’s day.

The trains in Ireland have become more efficient over the last 20 years. Most inter city lines have an hourly service each way.

The less busy lines have a 2 hourly service.

Suburban services are much more frequent, with improvements planned in many areas.

Admittedly many areas were left without railways because of the large scale cuts in the 1960’s due to lack of use and money for improvements.

The trains are modern and reasonably regular in the areas that are still served.

The services are far busier now, even after the massive motorway construction programme of the last 30 years.

It must be remembered that Ireland has a much lower density of population than the UK.

As a founding member of Friends Of Barrow Park (to my constant amazement) I got to go to a Cumbria In Bloom awards ceremony yesterday at Barrow Town Hall.

We only won one!

They're graded 1-5, 5 being the top award.  Ours was Level 4, which made us very happy.  Credit to the rest of the team really, because I'm not able to do much more than encourage them, but that didn't stop me getting in the official photos...

People used to do that with Minis in the 60s and 70s.  I actually like that; not just for the nostalgia but it's probably a better car in most respects than the ones the factory is putting their badge on these days!

What’s that all about Eddy? Sounds interesting.

Well done all concerned on the award and work.

Well firstly: thank you :)

Secondly, there are three strands to the story really.

1: Cumbria In Bloom.  I'm sure this is easy enough to grasp, there will be similar organisations all over the country, encouraging people to get involved and decorate our urban landscape with flowers.  CIB has been going 40 years this year, and presenting awards in various categories annually.  These things are generally supported by local councils, as it gives them a way of prettying-up their area without costing too much.

2: Friends Of Barrow Park.  There was a committee under this name, apparently, but it petered out a few years ago.  I suspect the combination of an ageing demographic and Covid (and all the usual viruses) saw them off.  And so to Strand Three.

3: Carer Support Drop-in Cafe on Friday Mornings.  I first started going to this when we arrived here in 2012, after spotting a flyer at the GP surgery.  I am now one of the longest-standing members, amazingly.  I've been there when there's just been two or three of us; now a dozen is a light week and several of us usually go somewhere for lunch after the meeting.  I have often been the only male in the lunch party...  For some time now we've had Guest Speakers coming in to talk to us, and a couple of years ago we got two Barrow councillors; both Labour as is the custom in this town.  They were keen to find out what we thought should be done to improve the town, and as a (then) regular user of it, I raised some suggestions about the park.  One of the councillors mentioned that there used to be a Friends group in the park, and would any of us be interested in rekindling such a thing?  Looking, I might add, directly at me!  Well I'm retired now, whether or not I wanted to be.  So I said yes, I'd be up for that.  Be careful what you wish for!  Within weeks we held our first meeting, supported by the council and the contractors running the park, and we've kept up these meetings.  We have taken on responsibility for the Showhouse, a big greenhouse that used to be open to the public but hasn't been  for a couple of years and was looking somewhat neglected.  CIB came to inspect the park a few months later, by which time we had tidied the place up quite a lot, resurrected many of the plants and even added some.  We've planted some trees and we are generally improving the park as we go.  I was there on the day of the CIB visit so was able to guide them round a bit and put across how much the park means to local residents; I'm only a few streets away myself.  Now I'm no gardener, I could only name a handful of the things we're growing and I'd probably get some of them wrong!  I'm also no longer able to handle the physical work, but as said above, I can and do sit in meetings and discuss ideas, and I do turn up for events to give encouragement and smile at the public.  Also, one of those two original councillors has stayed with the Friends and I can probably now consider her a friend (small f).  She was at the ceremony on Thursday too.

20 years ago I would never have imagined my life as it is now.  I've had some horrifying moments but also some huge positives.  Being still here to experience them all is precious.

That’s fantastic Eddy! What a great thing to be involved with, and definitely a very worthy cause.
The award was clearly very well deserved.

p.s. looked at the other photos - there's nothing in the description about this thing - maybe not so slow but a mechanical challenge?
Why would you?

Yep I'm sure just dangling some 28mm copper plumbing pipe 4 inches off the bottom of a car with absolutely zero support won't cause any issues whatsoever 😂

I'd put a 1200 single port in it.

Looks like they'd juts not had time to fit the supports before they got called away to design the cooling system on the upcoming MGF?

I know nuffink about Beetles to be fair but slapping  a V8 into the backend and a rad at the front just seems a bit daft
