What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

My grin is getting some new wheels for my mota. I'm sure there will be many that will say they look shit and are not original. My answer to that is that, for me, it has been more positive than negative. The wheels and  tyres are literally brand new. Only driven 200 yards. You might consider a jump from 13's to 15's is too much but I think they fit well, although I wasn't sure about the white to be honest. Can always change the colour if I feel like it.

Positives. 1; Easier to get in and out. 71 and it won't get easier.

2: I won't bang my head on the rear door. Built for smaller people.

3; Getting on the trailer easier. Been catching the bottom a bit, loading.

4; When on the trailer and getting out, the door scrapes across the mudguard.

5; They are 6.5 so fill the arches nicely.

6; They drop the revs at 70 down from 3500 to a touch over 3000.

7: Twisties could be more fun.

Negatives. From me, none.

When I saw them I was thinking 'fuckin white'? A lot of cars I've seen with white I've thought naah that don't look right but I think it depends a bit on the car colour. Maybe with blue it might be ok.  And yea I iz daan wiv the lads, croooozin yo.

Ahh - OK I have two largish O rings that would do your CDT (but having a facepalm moment) they're intercooler and you're doing the coolant system - so red herring x two from me?

Papanaşi! I came all the way to Romania for these.

You can't quite tell from these pictures but it's like a ring doughnut with a smaller ball shaped doughnut plonked on top and covered in cream and runny jam. The doughnuts are obviously deep fried and come piping hot and crispy on the outside.

There used to be a Romanian restaurant in Southampton which is where we first discovered them. Unfortunately it didn't survive lockdown. Actually it survived the first lockdown but never reopened after the second. And there don't seem to be any other Romanian restaurants anywhere near us.

That's how long I've had to wait so I'm going to eat them every day I'm here.

Bitter sweet grin. Have finally been able to obtain full sized copies of two of the medals awarded to my dad for two campaigns from the late 40’s and early 50’s. GSM medal Korea and GSM Palestine with clasp.  I think there might be a third for Kenya but will need to do more research. Originals were long lost since the early 70’s.
Sadly dad is long gone but at least I will have the correct medals.

I know someone who has one of those.

He's a friend of a work colleague whom I've met a couple of times but haven't seen for a good few years, he works off shore but has a very well equipped hobby shed for his fortnights at home.

When I was told he was building a mk2 Escort using a Chinese shell I pointed out that there was a company in Wales making every part, the repsonse was that the MST shell was £25k and the chinese one was £10k.

My colleague has seen it, the quality is good enough for him to covet the vehicle and any remedial works required have been very minor in comparison to the time spend restoring an original or the money spent on an MST shell.

I remember when the Chinese shells were first announced the usual uproar ensued.

These people were either worried that their old Escort parts cash cow would be worth less because of the availability of new parts or chose to forget that the newest original shells were over 40 years old, were cheaply built shite in the first place and in many cases spent the next 40 years bouncing off trees in the hands of wannabe Hanu Mikkolas🤷‍♂️

It appears I may have overlooked some scrutiny and checks when booking my hotel in Berlin tomorrow night. In addition to shit reviews, Street View has revealed some interesting local amenities.

Only a grin because you have to laugh...

If you'll be staying at Sinaia hotel, and like it quiet, change your accomodations. It's the one hotel I know of that has a dance club, and at night you can hear the music from across the street.

Well here's a thing. As discussed previously I had booked in to the Rina Cerbul. It was only two stars but was cheap and very near the station which was the main thing I needed. Well when I arrived there was a note on the door telling me to go to the reception of Hotel Sinaia over the road at which point they told me I would be staying there instead. It seems when there are few bookings they move everybody over to the one hotel.

Wary of what you said I said the place underneath looks a bit noisy but the receptionist said that was only Fridays and Saturdays. Still wary, I asked if I could have a room as high as possible. So she put me on the eighth floor which is great. From here I have an excellent view of the hotel I should have been staying at.

IMG_20240526_164004.jpg.1544a80ce19dba7230e894015383ae6e.jpg

The only thing I can hear up here are the trains which is great, and are why I'm here in the first place. The railway line is in the trees behind the hotel. Not only can I hear the horns (Romanian train drivers are very horn happy) I can hear the traction motors of the locos. The bigger freights have a banker loco on the back because of the steep gradients and I can hear the front loco then the train then the rear loco whining away at the back. The freight trains run all night. I could shut the window but where's the fun in that?

Another bonus is that I've gone from a two star to a four star hotel at no extra cost. I did look at this place when looking for places but decided it was too expensive. Now I've got it for half the price.

Here it is. No idea how old it is but it does look communist era.

The window opens properly which isn't always the case with modern hotels and the views are fantastic.

Just the one I wanted to suggest! It's part of the same company as Hotel Sinaia across the street, the rooms are furnished the same, but it scores 2 starts and not 4 due to the fact it's an old really nice building, and as such the corridors are not at the width requirement for 3 stars. And it didn't had en suite bathrooms for all the rooms, but now it does, it's just that the rooms are smaller and the bathroom is not big enough. Then again, at a bit over half the price of the one across the street, you can't complain.

Just two hints: in the bus station in the park you'll find a non-stop shop, if you need a pack of cigarettes/biscuits/gum or some wine/beer at  0 dark hundred hours, and going towards Brașov right after Cerbul hotel (you'll pass it coming from the station) is a nice coffee shop with some lovely cakes.

The cake shop has been sampled. More of a patisserie than a cake shop.

I really didn't know where to start.

IMG_20240527_143801.jpg.7844d1f90935c1085df2e68af1c3820c.jpg

The same place have a kiosk in the park over the road where I had some ice cream and beer yesterday. Couldn't fault that either.

It's Berlin though, WCPGW. Just enjoy it. I've ended up in some unusual places that no tourist would ever see simply because I like going on their MAN double deck buses and I've never felt uncomfortable or scared.

It's more the shite reviews that have me worried but it's for one night. It can't be worse than the last time I went to Pontins...

Any recommendations for places to see/grab food? I'm there all day Wednesday.

Not particularly autoshite but this place is well worth a visit

Classic-Remise Berlin

https://remise.de/berlin

Also the technology museum is good, it's the one with the C-47 in the roof.

Make sure you get to see all the buildings as there's lots of cool stuff to play with upstairs in the (average) road transport building.
