What makes you grin? Antidote to grumpy thread

I had a good day out on Saturday, I had entered the 10k race up at Killin in the highlands so decided to take the mx5 and give it a good run out on those lovely roads. When I got to Killin, I discovered the parking for the event was in a field - not exactly ideal for the lowered mazda with trackday tyres - but I gave it a go.

On my way into the field, I overheard the marshall excitedly telling his mate over the walking talkie about "...proper roll cage and bucket seats and everything..." he obviously liked the little mx.

I parked up amongst the long grass and cow pats, as I put the roof up, I heard the folks at the car next to me having a little chuckle at the Autoshite dealer sticker in the window. It turns out they were from Cambs and know of "six mile bottom", I had previously presumed it to be a made up place. We chatted for a bit, one of them owns a 100,000 mile scenic, I suggested he would fit right in here :)

After the race, I spotted the same Marshall on the gate so gave it the full sideways beans on the way out of the field, he was laughing his back off.

I went for a drive in the afternoon and stopped to explore a dam, when I looked back across to where I'd parked there was a bunch of tourists taking turns posing for photos by my car

On the way home, I stopped for a wazz and had a look at the map to see what interesting roads I should take. A stressed out looking fellow approached and asked for help with directions - due to an accident and roadworks closing two main roads, he'd been on a three hour detour and had lost all faith in the satnav. His Mrs and two young kids weren't exactly happy either :(

We figured out where he needed to be heading but it was a long journey still ahead of him, I gave him my map so at least he had a fighting chance of making it to Skye in one piece.

I booted the mazda down the country roads and had a cracking time of it, what a great little car and a smashing day out.

Are you on the Facebook page for Puma owners? They have a few on there who often wave to others, surprisingly for a one model 'forum' and even more surprisingly-er for social media, it's a brilliant.

Any interest in a Puma that's been lifted and prepped for off road tomfoolery?

"That's the puma. It's been lifted for going off road and partly stripped too. I have all the parts to put back into it just haven't got the time. There's a steel plate underneath that's why there's bolts in the floor pan. If it doesn't go then I'll get a mate to banger it and bin it. Escort won't be bangered. She's too good for that. Neither have mot. Don't think escort would take much. Puma probably a lot more."

I was once cast as the lead role in the silent version of Oliver.

It was brilliant, I couldn't ask for more.

It's on the road to Newmarket.

Victory went to his head, he made a half-hearted attempt to shag a Bloodhound bitch. The puppies would have been interesting.

After the spin cycle do you put Barbara Cartland in the tumble drier to get the fluffy ness?

Surely that depends on where you’re driving from?

And that's why I don't have any AS stickers. I quite often go through Six Mile Bottom. There was a convenience shop at that address and he had suitable crap parked outside. An old unloved 190 and a MK1 Punto were up for sale at ambitious prices.

It's a Spar these days so they have upped their game with the image.

Had the hearse out over the weekend which started badly when it decided to put the charge light on again, luckily only a bad connection. Then today we went to a local fete and came back to it and found as note under the wiper from a bloke who is interested in buying it. I think I sacred him off when I messaged him with a price. It still turns heads which gets a bit of a pain on the motorway when they pull along side to gawp whilst I am coming up behind a lorry. I think it is nearly reliable now which is about time the bloody thing.

gm, what dam was that? I'm guessing part of the Breadalbane hydro scheme.

People do that when I’m in the 2cv or fiat. Get out of the bloody way I want to pull out!

I'm not too sure - I just turned off at an interesting looking side road and happened upon it.

The field we were parked in had an old ROC post in it, I had a quick look and the padlocks were missing - too many folks around to have a go at the hatch but I may have to go back some day.

'Tis a good dam, sir !

Are you a dam fan ? I particularly enjoyed Pitlochry's dam when I went there to buy a ropey peugoueut. So nice of them to think of the fish

Am I a dam fan? Er, yes. 11 years ago a mate lent me the book "The Hydro Boys" by Emma Wood, which led me into studying engineering with the OU and a complete career change...!

I just spoke to a man about a car. A verbal agreement has been reached. Tomorrow I go speak to the bank about some money.

Cruachan is a decent damn. Park at the visitor center, climb the steep footpath opposite and you'll be treated to great views.

Todays grin is finally finished the rear spring swap on the Mk2 Spitfire. As it was early we then swapped the entire exhaust system for a stainless one. Few final fettles today and it will be finished. As it was still fairly early, we demolished a few magnums of bubbly. A magnum of very decent sparkling rose we found for 5.17 euros a Magnum!

Also, todays weather is forecast for 28c and the day has started with glorious sunshine, so after the fettling looks like a daysitting under the Linden tree with a few beers.

Looked out the back yesterday, noticed a large pile of fag stumps and two empty packets on the road. put the CCTV onto 'play back' and soon discovered the culprit with his sign written van. A polite message on Facebook because although I felt like being rude, I'd thought I'd ask nicely first, and had there been no joy I'd have just told them I was sending the footage to the council.

Anyhow, checked the cameras again just now and he's been back and picked it all up.

I topped up the windscreen washer fluid on the new V70 today. Noticed a sticker with a picture of timing gears and belt on. Writing is a bit faded but easy enough to read close up, and it was changed 25000 miles and 4 years ago. Woohoo! I was expecting to have to do it pretty soon but it can wait a while now.

Two Mile Bottom is near Thetford.

One of the local dogging sites.

Out at work today in the van. I was doing a little inspection job in a substation and a colleague comes in smiling. He says ‘had your van in for a service lately have you?’

Erm, yeah about a month ago.

He was looking at my van, amazed at how clean it is and spotted something shiny tucked down the front scuttle under the windscreen wipers.

He laughed and handed me a 13mm Bluepoint ratchet spanner, a 13mm combo spanner and a decent screwdriver! All seemingly left there by the mechanic that serviced my van.

They were still in good nik too despite being rained on. I’m surprised they’re still there tbh, I’ve done some miles with them sat there!

Pretty cool to find though.
