Went with a couple of pals last night to see Limehouse Lizzy. It was an ace night. Did not sleep well afterwards due to Thin Lizzy songs buzzing in my head.

Sump has been dropped and loads of gritty shit shoveled out the bottom, clogged breather pipe rinsed out with brake cleaner and cleaned up with oil additive for 20 minutes at 4k rpm and the meriva is slightly better...

Seems to pick up the pace faster, there is a slight smell of burning oil though, but I did spill loads all over the manifold and cat. Was oil all over the front of the block too, have cleaned it up and will keep an eye on it. Was a slight weep from the sump until I tightened the bolts some more.

So hopefully job done. Is it worth adding stuff to the oil until the next change? The stuff I used today said don't drive with this added etc.

Annual leave.  I've got tomorrow and Monday off work and it couldn't come at a better time, I need a few days away from this shitehole.  Plans are to potter about tomorrow doing car stuff, cleaning the Metro and an oil change, and then Sunday is Austin Morris day so I'll be taking the old girl to that.  Is anyone off here planning to go?  I'll be in a beige Metro so pop over and say hello.

I'll be there Rob, in the Zummerzet as the Maestro's still off the road with its engine in pieces. Admission is £11 for an adult, so it's not too bad if it's just one person going, but for a couple or family it starts getting extortionate.

Interestingly I've heard Brooklands are now allowing any cars to attempt the Test Hill. Last time I went, 2011 I think, it was pre-war cars only. I'm hoping my B-Series engined Somerset will storm it :)

Just moved the meriva from stone cold and the engine doesnt tap like a cunt anymore for a minute or two before settling down! I think the oil leak was fixed by tightening the bolts too as it's not left a markat asda or a lady we went to visit to buy her sofas driveway, which is nice!

I'm surprised they avoided the 'Immigrant Shark threatening to eat your kids and lower your houseprices, takes British nibbling fishes' jobs' headline, well done Daily Mail.

Well, after a few arse aches trying to buy an internet wifi dongle, I'm actually online now through my own wifi dongle bought at a shop that actually sells them. Fantastic.

Also, a passed my "driving test". The company who employs me gives us a shared car per-house. The test was only to see if your compentent enough to drive here in France. Now I get use the houses White Skoda Fabia TDi. It's a lease car and nowt exciting but now I have the freedom to use the car when it's free, which'll be most of the time as the other housemates like a drink or two.

Went cycling with the family last week and just before we went,  I found out that the freewheel on the boys mountain bike had stopped working.  This wasn't an issue as it turned out as he'd grown into a bigger one that I had stashed away.  Picked up an ebay purchased tag-a-long bike for the daughter on the way to the woods and was half way round before finding out that the freewheel on that wasn't working either.

So today it was time to find out how to fix or replace a freewheel and it's gone suprisingly well,  a few youtube videos showed me how to remove one with various degrees of professionalism ranging from immaculate workshops with proper tools to a tattooed bloke with a 3' pipe wrench instead of a chain whip.  All claimed that dismantling the freewheel was only going to lead to an enormous fail with lots of ball bearing everywhere.

I had a spares bike so the plan was to remove the freewheel complete and swap it over but it wouldn't come off and as Ms C had gone out with the car I couldn't take the wheel to the bike shop for a proper tool,  I could open the freewheel though so figuring that I had nothing to loose I knocked it open with a hammer and small screwdriver catching the 50 or so tiny ball bearings in a tray.  Inside was a rusty mess but once it was cleaned up and re-oiled it seemed to be working ok.  A smear of CV joint grease around the inner ball race held the ball bearings into place well enough to slide the inner ratchet bit into the housing then I could drop the remaining BB's into the outer ball race.  They sat there nicely enough while I screwed the cover back on and re-assembled the bike.

I'm really happy to have got this done as I might struggle to get spares for our older bikes so knowing that I can fix rather than replace parts like this will enable me to keep them original.

Ah yes, cycling...

my mates very kindly bought me some of those fancy pedals that you clip your shoes into for my birthday. Whanged down to Sport Direct Soccer Emporium  and got the matching shoes and cleats and went for my first ride in them today.

At the start of the ride I didn't clip in properly, smashed my knackers on the seat then promptly attempted to insert the seat somewhere VERY uncomfortable and nearly ripped my farmers out at the same time.

Getting a bit blasé as you do, I attempted to have a rest near the top of a BFO hill for a rest and couldn't get my feet out of the pedals, so sort of petered to a stop then keeled over into a bush. I couldn't get up for laughing and my mate nearly fell off ROFLING at me.

Ah yes, the clip less moment. Does become second nature before you loose most of your skin/dignity though. Can you set the springs in the pedal day little lower just so you can clip in and out a bit easier for the first few rides?

Posted

They need some minor tweaking, we set them at the slackest with the allen key. I found them (apart from the obvious moment) easier to get out of than in to, hopefully I'll get used to it though.  One thing it will do is make me do longer rides as I CBA going through towns and built up areas as don't want to keep unclipping.

Did 40.5 miles today, which I'm pretty happy with as still unfit and we faced some bloody big hills and had a strong wind against us for a long, long while.

I managed to roll a range rover following a bunny like that. Well not quite the same we had been drinking and were in the middle of a rather large field. Those bunnies can't half change direction quick, unlike range rovers !
