It's 1996, Britpop is in full swing and Tony Blair is readying Labour for government. In America you can still buy a body on frame 2 tonne rwd 5.5m long brick with wood panelled sides and a moosive 5.7 V8 producing 260bhp. Seems like the final hurrah of the 1950's American post-war dream right there (Crown Vic still went on of course).

M25 The Magic Roundabout: First Tuesday (ITV programme). 1991.  Chod content guaranteed.

21mins, Citroën XM, naughty naughty!

The French truck driver killed at the end, this accident was featured on a similar programme.  The explanation given was that he crashed, got out the cab, closed the door but it didn’t latch.  The wind then got the door, it hit him in the back and pushed him into the carriageway and he was then run over by the blue Astravan.

What was the fancy Mk2 Golf pulled up about halfway though?  Driver was on the phone and reading the paper.  It was left hand drive with very fancy looking leather Recaro seats.  Perhaps a Rallye or something?

Harry reviews a decent car not some BMW M sport GT3 RS whatever shite.

The engine understandably seemed like a good idea at the time but WTF were they thinking of with that choice of gearbox? Seems an over complicated solution to a problem that didn’t exist. Surely most people either would prefer a full automatic or a standard manual.

That's the same as the Semi-Auto that was used in the VW Beetle. Conventional gear lever with a clutch that worked when you touched the lever.

Ask @vulgalour (this is not his actual car).

Then there was the manumatic gearboxes fitted as options to MG Magnette, Ford Angila and a few more. Do not forget the VW Beetle also available with a semi autobox, around the same time as this car.

You have to view them in context a bit.  When pre-selectors were most popular, a lot of stuff still didn't have synchromesh on first if manual, and were godawful if automatic.  It's a surprisingly intuitive thing to use, at least for the short distance Pat and I have used ours, and makes for a very pleasant gearchange.  No worrying about balancing the clutch before setting off or whatever, I imagine it's just about impossible to stall it if it's in good health, and just makes the driving experience a bit more relaxed.

To be fair Autos, especially in smaller engined cars, at the same period were not brilliant either. Autos eat a lot of the power thus making them not so fast and more thirsty.

OK, not in the least bit autoshite but the performance of this thing is something to see. Oh, and the newer version they're working on improves cornering by 25%. Jesus H.

Makes you wonder why anyone would buy a Gordon Murray or Lotus Evija instead (well I know why, as they're investments for the super rich, but just from a car perspective)
