Very cold one over the next few days folks they say. Even London was down to 0° last night.

I've just been and glugged plenty more ethylene glycol into my Landcruiser this afternoon - I recommend checking your antifreeze is sufficient.

Some winter screen wash also helps.

And vehicles aside - worth checking any vulnerable neighbours etc are ok.

I use prestone concentrated screenwash and de-icer

Good old Italian car ownership. Is it rusty?

Passenger side sill is very bubbly and also scheduled for replacement, hopefully end of January. It had subframe replacement with the previous owner, which is a known weak spot on these.

I had every single weakspot blowing up whilst in my ownership though. Servo line, handbrake cables, M32 gearbox grenading itself, M32 munching the bearings, oil leak from THAT seal that leaked onto the (gold plated judging by the price) engine mount, DMF, the whole nine yards. 🤦‍♂️

I love it though and can’t see anything else I like that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to buy and run that would do a better job of being a daily than it does, so I will keep rolling my eyes and paying stupid bills. I plan to throw F40 gearbox and a bigger turbo at it once either gives up. There’s a slight turbo whine and audible CLONK from DMF when shutting the car off, so it’s a matter of when not if really.

Was cold the other day. Alison clicked over 286,000 miles.

Big bro' drove her a couple of weeks back and was impressed with her performance. He did fix her stiff gear mechanism as that was stiff.

I've been running Alison for 11 years and bought her with 125,000 on the clock!

Fucking amazing machine!

I managed to snap my exhaust camshaft by accident today, I had it 90° out from where it was supposed to be and the valve springs on #4 put enough pressure on it to snap it while I was nipping up the bearings. I've really fucked myself over because Toyota list it as discontinued and no one is breaking anything with a 4A-F at the moment. I think I might just have written off my car by being thick. Amayama might have stock, and I'm waiting for them to get back to me.

From what I have read, the cams are the same in a 4A-F and a 4A-FE, so that might open up some new avenues? ebay have a few 4A-FE engines selling for £400-500, and also someone seemingly breaking one and selling parts including the loom. If the seller is parting it out you might be able to buy the head complete?

EDIT: Found it - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/315641519329

£120, bet if you offered £100 he'd snap your arm off

That's a great find! 4A-FE camshafts from engines made before 1995 are compatible, and that's off a '92 Corolla. Thank you Stanky!

Offer's accepted and it's on its way. Pending order for a brand new one on Amayama cancelled...

I bet whoever selling that is going to their partner and saying "See! Told you it's worth keeping hold of and trying to sell all these old obscure engine bits, someone else will want it eventually!"

The temperature here, whilst balmy compared to the rest of the UK, has dropped to the lowest I think it has been so far this winter. I decided to see how the XUD powered XM started with just one cycle of the cheapest eBay glow plugs rather than the standard* two cycles that it needs to get going in the cold. Scenes from my driveway this morning were similar to this:

Think I best get some proper glow plugs.

I seem to have bought a practically new car, by my standards anyway.

Mrs Yoss has always gone on about how much she likes VW Up!s in Mayan Blue. I agreed we could get one one day and that day seems to be today. I agreed on the proviso that it be a five door, as the three door looks odd with that little triangley rear side window. And also that it be a High Up! as they look better with the alloy wheels and front fog lights. So what are the chances of finding a five door High Up! in Mayan Blue? I thought I was fairly safe as most High Up!s come in more expensive metallic colours. Then my friend sent her the link to this one. What's more it was only 28 miles away so I really had no excuse.

As it was so close there is no collection thread as it only took half an hour to get there.

Stopped for lunch at a garden centre on the way home.

We now have four cars. I often felt like I wasn't trying hard enough compared to some people's efforts on here but I'm catching up.

And it goes nicely with next doors Matiz.

Also, as well as being a High Up! It has a number of extras on top. The most obvious of which, which I love and was one reason I didn't object to buying it was the colour coded dashboard.

A very rare option that really brightens the place up in an otherwise quite black interior. The standard dash is piano black on the higher spec cars. Not only is this brighter, it doesn't show fingerprints like the black does.

Obviously I would have preferred the Škoda version but even I have to admit they don't do any colours as good as this one. And anyway, all variants are built in the same factory in Slovakia, near Bratislava so it is in effect a Škoda with a VW badge on, rather than the other way around. At least that's what I'm telling myself anyway to justify buying it.

The Triumph is the only car narrow enough to park down the side of the house and still get out. If we had four moderns this would not be possible.

The place we bought it from had some odd stuff in stock. The oddest being this.

A convertible ute! It's a Chevy SSR apparently. No me neither.

A couple of these retro Toyota Landcruisers.

IMG_20250109_121930.thumb.jpg.9d10aca9866ce688a9c9407784793243.jpg

At least three two tone 500s, at least one of which was an Abarth 595.

IMG_20250109_122526.thumb.jpg.b261e59bb0ffe24635ce923166e0c4d3.jpg

There was also some sort of Ferrari in the corner but I ignored that as I have no interest. In reality I just got distracted by the Chevy as he was moving it to get another car out for MOT. £25k if anybody is interested.

Lovely!

That looks absolutely cracking. A mate has a red Up with steel wheels and a black dashboard, but it's still absolutely ace. I've had a go of it a few times and covet it. They have the manners and ride quality of a much bigger car somehow.

Chevy SSR's are great trucks with an LS and manual, there really is nothing like it. Shame this one is silver.

Always liked the Up! And a great colour too. Dad had a High up, and provided excellent service. I opted for a mid range Move up without the fancy wheels which were a pain to clean

Our oldest one is 13 years old with no gearbox troubles, the newest 8 again with no troubles. Both are manuals so maybe it's an auto issue?

I'd have another in a heartbeat.

Well the fact this only has 33k on it hopefully means it'll be OK for a couple of weeks.

To be honest I didn't even realise there was an auto until a couple of days ago when I started comparing them all to ours. Is it like a mini DSG or is it a proper auto?

A friend of mine, who pointed the advert out to Mrs Yoss in the first place loves them. He's the sort who chops his cars in even before the three years is up (he leases them all). He tries other things from time to time if he can get a stupidly good deal but always come back to these. Now you can't buy them new any more I think he'll be sticking to the two he has. He's had loads, of all three badges but currently has an Up! in that nice pale blue and a white Up! GTI with bronze Ronal Turbos on it.

He's never had any gearbox troubles but most of his are nearly new.

I've never seen another car with only three parking sensors, but then it doesn't really need any.

I'll assume the Panda is one of theirs or else that is a bit cheeky. Parking wasn't great there and the showroom was full so they had a couple of there stock out in the road.

Sorry @Yoss, the Triumph beats the others hands down 😁

I won't disagree with that. I'll have had it 30 years in November so it's not going anywhere. I'll probably be buried in it!

It drives surprisingly well. It doesn't feel that different to a modern car which is not something you can say about all 60 year old designs.

The steering is a bit heavy at low speeds, mainly because I have a smaller Mountney steering wheel and slightly wider tyres on the Sprint wheels but the steering is surprisingly direct and high geared. It's a 1300 TC so has the Spitfire spec engine with a few weeks on top.

I've been using it as my daily since I broke blue Favorit about a month ago. The only thing that dates it is that in warm weather with the roof and windows open I come home smelling of exhaust fumes but that's OK isn't it?
