An overdrive? Did the spec for the 940 appear through a wormhole from 1968?

My 1998 940 spec certainly looks like it does (auto box tho’)

Having an eventful holiday on the west coast / Skye.

This cunt decided this afternoon would be the perfect time to drop a pin out of the driver's side drum in disc handbrake mechanism. While I was between flippin' Portree and Broadford.

IMG_20230622_161129.thumb.jpg.8da56a7fd886cee9a3c1b076fcdbc7eb.jpg

Called auto aid, and a guy came down from Portree in under an hour. We agreed to just completely remove the driver's side handbrake shoes. The pins had pulled out of the backing plate.

Again. I repaired it this time last year with repair washers but it's too far gone now.

IMG_20230622_171417.thumb.jpg.d533424d93ba726ffe3ac14271015a7e.jpg

Then just as he dropped it off the jack, somebody crashed into a biker at the junction just outside the car park.

The biker got up again, and I squeezed past before the traffic got completely fucked.

The rear brake backing plates can be a job for the local shite friendly garage after I get home on Tuesday. Barring this bastard throwing any other curveballs.

Should have taken the Clio...

As a side note, the noise of an E36 handbrake pin pinging around inside the disc at speed is spectacular / terrifying.

I had the same on my E46, they make a hell of a noise. After diagnosing the noise, I definitely didn’t* keep driving it until the new backing plates turned up 🤣

Working for an American finance tech firm, they love putting pressure on people. Today, there was a lot of that, and it put me in a miserable mood. I decided to go for a drive, and ended up having one of those memorable drives. Good for the soul, and reminds me why cars are so great.

I had a sit, being away from it all was excellent. Being in the North Wessex downs it is easy to take the great scenery for granted. Watching the rain coming down, and basking in the sun was excellent.

What a shit time of it. It’s always bloody annoying. Glad the handbrake shoe didn’t come adrift and lock the rear wheel. Which happened to me on a shite 318ti some years ago.

For fitting a new backing plate, it’s easiest to cut the plate and slip it on. Else you have to remove the rear hub, and go through the pain of getting the rear driveshaft and bearing out.

Here's me thinking the hub just unbolted from the end of the driveshaft...

I wish my E36 was half as nice as yours, though.

I also have a mysterious clicking / creaking from somewhere in the front end. It's been doing it for a year, at least, without getting any worse. It is rather irritating now, mind.

You're more brave / stupid than I am!

The noise it makes as it pings about sounds genuinely catastrophic. When it did it the first time, I thought the diff was exploding!

The bearings are pressed into the rear hub and the driveshaft passes through them. Once corroded in it can be quite the sad job.

That’s kind of you to say. It’s off to FoTU (with me in it) soonish.

I'm going to replace the buckle. While I have a lot of red electrical tape to hand, the button has worn so thin it's starting to break up everywhere.

I'd rather have duct tape than trying to stick something edible.

Collected. No pez shot as it had 3/4 of a tank.

Smaller wheels and cloth seats FTW.

103k, ten months test, recent cambelt, ALL THE TOYS, full history, exceptionally clean, low owners, and the a/c works.

It was £1795.

Fucking belter.

@Split_Pin is this the guy with the YouTube channel?

Nah he's been identified on the FB pages, his name is Ian.  It's a rep spec 1.6 so it was just cruising at that speed. Dougie normally does that kind of thing on the back roads in something that's been out of MOT for 4 years 😂

Actually, @JMotor this is Ian Cadden and I think he might have a flywheel going spare.

That's a bit sad really, the same could have been done using newer scrap cars to the same effect.
