Driving back from the coast last night I noticed my 206cc offside headlight was out . I pulled into a layby and had a look. Wriggled the wiring and it briefly came on. Couldn't remove the terminal but now the sidelight was out too. It was starting to get dark so I ended up being one of those wankers driving about with one headlight and fogs on.

Lunchtime today I drove the Pug into the workshop to have a better look. The earth terminal was corroded to the bulb and the plastic block had melted. I prised the terminals off with a screwdriver but then using a small pick had to prise the bulb out. One bulb terminal had melted, must have got mightily hot. New bulb, melted plastic cut away, new earth terminal and success...Err no, even the fuse had blown. All done now although I will be keeping an eye on it.

Bagged a cheap period Rover radio/cassette/CD controller off the Bay a few weeks back, and took delivery of the period CD changer needed last week, together with the all-important data lead.

Plumbed it all in to the 620 this evening . 

The radio (R960) would normally go for about a ton even on eBay, cos 'retro'. I paid 24 quid, as it was sold for parts. Took a gamble on it as knew I could get a code for 8 quid and the description was 'dead grandad's car, worked before the battery was disconnected, can't test no code'.

Job's a good un - now have top spec ICE on my 'just above base spec' vehicle.

Other jobs done recently - Accord ATF changed (first change out of three in the next 9 months), rear number plate bulb changed (guess which was easier ? Clue, PELA).

Been to see a 306 1.9d with 11 months MOT. Aircon too, £250

Well, drove lovely, 10% discount agreed, just about to head to get cash, walked round the passenger side.

Big load of rust bubbles in the middle of the c pillar.

Torch application shows an inner wing of Swiss cheese consistency:(

Walked away.

 

No a bad catch when it's dark and drizzly at 9pm!

It is confirmed... both cars fit in the garage with ease!! Result!!

Single door makes entry/exit more challenging than it needs to be, but both can be in the dry now*! 

 

 

*Until I buy something more needing the garage space and the MX5 gets kicked out again.

Wow really? I think I've a couple of R960 radios floating about.

A very nice example, done nearly the same miles as my 850 but feels altogether less shonky. Apparently the clutch is on the way out so I'm not allowed to drive it on the strength of how the C2 gets treated. Which is probably fair.

We went in search of the alleged mine, traversing some lovely public highways to get there.

We found it, investigated thoroughly, got quite wet and muddy.

On the way back we took a less well travelled highway. With grass almost as high as the windscreen in the centre at places. This was traversed at speed with all manner of worryingly sumpy noises coming from beneath us.

One has not lived until you're flying down a gravel road in a fully (FULLY) loaded Volvo estate at great speed.

Went to look at a beautiful countryside cottage with small outhouse (project recording studio, perfect), big double garage, outdoor workshop (complete with VW air-cooled engine block.  The owner was pleased I picked up on this and it later emerged at one stage he owned a double-decker bus) in serious need of refurbishment and renovation.  Purchase price was in budget, edging on to beautiful woodland near an AONB and it was next door to one of my other half's very early childhood homes.  The owner was there when she was born and remembered her and her parents.

We've turned it down.  Partly because of the cost of a total conversion (including fuel oil conversion) but also because the ceilings in the top bedroom are 6'3".  Not a problem for SO but somewhat of an issue for me...!  I don't want ceilings an inch higher than the top of my head.

Don't regret it, despite the chod ownership possibilities of such a place.

Drove to Peterborough in a heatwave so I could drive a Fiat Seicento. Like 320Touring's BMW 335, it annoyingly proved that modifications are actually hilarious if done right. Then drove a gorgeous X plate mk3 Escort. More video shoots today! Including a Renault 21...

Ran some LIQUI MOLY DIESEL PURGE though the V70 today, followed the various online instructions and the engine does seem much quieter and has a bit more poke. The diesel “pinking” under load is much less but I’m not sure if that’s down to the secondhand injector I fitted recently. We’ll see!

My mate has broken down in his 2008 Mazda 3 again. He has had nothing but trouble with the car. DPF issues, remapping, turbo went, twice. Just had another put on and now he has broken down again....

Just had the air con regassed for a special offer price of £40 (£39.95 if you must!). I fully expected it not to work, there to be multiple problems with compressors, condensors, pipework et al. But no, done and working fine. To be fair, it always did but it wasn't dreadfully cold and I do like cold... or warm,  or dry windscreens and de-humidified dogs. Still seems to take an age to come cold though but then I guess I am expecting it to be instant and it isn't quite.

I am a product of this age: instant gratification. I ain't waiting for no stinkin' air con, I want it NOW!

Not sure if I have done the right thing, but have done it anyway! Two months ago I started working as a self employed taxi driver just 'renting' a car for five days a week between 0700 and 1730. Was ok but meant I had to travel to the office, to pick up the car and back each day, fuel up and clean the car ready for the night driver which ate into my time. The opportunity came up to take over a four month old car as an owner driver, meaning a decrease in weekly 'rent' payments but an additional car payment. The net increase being £100 per week. The car will be fully maintained, insured, taxed and taxi tested by the company until it is paid for in 17 months. The car then becomes my property. No contract or liability during that period and I can hand it back to the taxi company at any point. I have total flexibility as to what days/hours I work and the car is 'mine' with personal use no problem. So far so good, but means that I now have to earn between £600/£700 per week to clear the £250/£350 per week which is sufficient for our needs at the moment. Have done that but the need to be out driving is relentless, five days a week (50 hours) if I am lucky. No night working through choice. The car is a 19 reg Dacia Logan MCV with the Renault 1.5 diesel engine and is incredibly good on fuel (adblue also needed)  so time will tell I suppose! I get five weeks holiday per year (no rent or car payment, but don't earn anything of course) 

My news. Bit of a quantum leap from doing almost bugger all.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out for you, I've often wondered about taxi drivers and how the system works.

We stumbled across this completely by chance on a weekend in Liverpool a few years ago and it was ace! Well worth it if you're in the area.

This morning just outside Exeter on the A30 a Volvo  lorry took out 250m of the central barrierand took out 3 cars and a Transit van on the other carriage way.  One might think that the fact that the lorry  was towing a caravan and two!  trailers (WTF!) might have something to do with the crash.  At least the lorry driver didn't run away after as the he/she had a serious leg injury.  

My mind boggled at the thought of that towing assembly - how could it be legal?

Mini went into the garage this morning with the parts load to have the stem seals replaced. They are going to check for worn rings first together with a few other things before crashing into the task.

Sounds expensive!

How long can you drive a car with the clutch release bearing whining? It sort of whines and clicks in time as something near it in the drivetrain revolves when you depress the clutch . Hmmm
